Terrene was very fortunate that there was already a Sage in their clan when she was born. Her parents were so devoted to her, they perhaps didn't pay as much attention to Terrene's nest mates as they should have. This wasn't entirely their fault though - this child was a peacock multigaze, unwittingly drawing her parents devotion entirely to herself. Alliu, the Sage, was quick to intervene, understanding what was happening. It was difficult to pull Terrene away from her parents, but she was taken to the depths of Saga City to understand herself better and protect those around her. She felt in turns terribly guilty that she might have denied her siblings love and nourishment and that she ought to be locked away, to frustration and injustice. Why should she change? Maybe she was just better than other dragons! Those darker thoughts were only born of lonliness and frustration, but if not for the support and companionship of Alliu those thoughts might have persisted. When Terrene was deemed ready, she returned home with Alliu. She was nervous about seeing her parents - worried that they'd blame her or hate her after they realised they had been under her influence, but also worried that they'd adore her and she wouldn't know if it was her influence or not. They were happy to see her, and readily welcomed her, but no matter how much love they gave her she always doubted its truth. She loved them too, of course she did, but she kept her distance and did not stay in their family den. When Rufus came through the Gardens and began to court her, Terrene was smitten but quick to doubt. Why should such a beautiful dragon look twice at her? Surely only because of the power of her Gaze. She was charmed by him, and her emotions must have bent his will to her desire. She fled him, hiding in the large hollow she had dug out beneath the tree Alliu lived in. Yet Rufus persisted with patience. She tried to explain he was under a spell or a hypnotism, but he did not seem to acknowledge the seriousness of it and that only convinced Terrene that he was under her spell. It was exhausting and a heavy weight on her heart to continually fight against something she wanted, especially when it was being offered the her so freely. She accepted his courtship, but too quickly found herself incubating eggs. Terrene hadn't considered what it might be like to have children, and she worried what might happen if she was the first thing her children laid eyes on. Would her Gaze be too strong for their little minds, even if she could control it at the sight of them? Would she be so maternal and filled with such love at the sight of them that she couldn't control it? What if she ruined them? The dire weight if these questions was too much for Terrene to bear, and she left Rufus in charge of their eggs, seeking solace beneath Alliu's tree. Terrene never met her first born children, so she could never have imagined she would ever meet a grandchild, or that she would be a grandmother. Rufus came to see her with the news that their grandchild had come to live in the clan, and Terrene longed to know more, yet at the same time was plagued by a terrible jealousy. The way Rufus spoke of her, so full of love, pride and devotion made her sound like the most precious, wonderful child and Terrene found herself wishing she could be a real grandmother to her. She had to make do with listening to Rufus' accounts, and even though it made her heart ache, she couldn't stop wanting to hear about sweet little Charm. This enabled Rufus to visit her more often than usual, although he respected her wishes and wore a blindfold in her company. Terrene had missed him and vauled the visits for his company too, although it pained her to feel her attachment to him and know that she could not be the mate he deserved. He always announced his arrival, and waited for her to come to him, but one day his greeting was distinctly strained with worry. Concerned, Terrene immediately emerged, only to catch sight of two other dragons lingering cautiously off to the side of the burrow entrance. She instantly recognised the warm pink fur of her older sister, Deme, but the other dragon... She was young, fresh out of adolescence, full of grace and beauty. Terrene knew this dragon to be the granddaughter she had thought so much about, and couldn't tear her gaze away. Before she could worry about the effects of her hypnotic Gaze, a low, ethereal call reverbated through the air. The source was a creature at Charm's feet, slowly approaching in almost ritualised snaking movements. Covered in dark feathers with the face of an owl, it emanated a warm glow from its eyes, face and strange antler protrusions. It was entrancing, and the call somehow soothing. Distantly, she heard her sister's voice: "This Brightbeast will aid you. She will sense any hypnotism from you, and cause this distraction to draw minds away from it. She can tell you when your hypnotism is happening and protect others." It took some time for those words to connect in Terrene's brain and correspond to the appropriate meaning. After all this time, there was a solution? Could this creature really help her so much? She was afraid of it not being the complete protection that Deme thought, afraid of experiencing family only to have to exile herself again. Most of all, she was tired of being afraid. Terrene emerged from her burrow, and her granddaughter rushed to meet her with no hesitation at all. A quick glance at the Brightbeast told Terrene this wasn't a result of any hypnosis - its glow had receeded and it sat preening itself. Terrene returned her granddaughter's affectionate nuzzling. Terrene named her Brightbeast Sezia. She turned out to be an extremely affective therapy familiar, perfectly suited to aid Terrene's struggles. Sezia formed a firm attachment with her, and she is often seen draped over Terrene's shoulders when at rest. Terrene is still introverted and hesitant in social situations, especially when confronted with large gatherings. She is eternally grateful for the love and care of her family, and is making up for lost time, seeing them as often as she can. She now visits her parents daily and her mother has started doing healing sessions with her - mediations to heal the mind and soothe the soul. She has finally moved out of her lonely burrow to sleep in the den Rufus had built for them (and suited to his size). Of course she did not forget Alliu, her friend and guide who was with her when no one else could be, singing soothing songs from her tree above Terrene's burrow. She made sure to visit often, and when she felt overwhelmed, it was always Alliu's tree that she returned to. Sage Subspecies: Glamoured Gaze Sages with Peacock are rarely seen for who they are. The mesmeric nature of the peacock eyes on their wings and bodies inclines other dragons to like them, ranging from an attraction to the dragon in question to seeing them as looking or being entirely different than they are. The effect can wear off as the individual is away from them or even as they spend more time with the Sage and become accustomed to their particular effects. Obviously this can be detrimental to the Sage and the affected dragon. Rumor has it that some powerful Sages have learned to enrapture or entrap other dragons with this ability and specialized movements or dances and keep them hypnotized for long periods even years. |
