Meical was worried for Moss. Of her first nest of three spiral hatchlings, he was immediately different. It wasn't just his vibrant, unseeing eyes and the glowing mark upon his head - his long body was thin, limp and weak. Meical struggled to get him to move, struggled getting him to respond at all. Did her child not possess any of the vital senses? How did such a thing happen?

Not knowing what to do, she carefully took him to her family in the Everbloom Gardens, leaving her other children in the care of her new clan. Her father, Sodalite, had reassured her, and taken the child deep into the underground caves he had excavated. Her mother, Ember, told her that she could fly home to her other newborns, who needed her just as much. They would do their best for the little one.

Down beneath the Gardens, Moss' grandparents tried everything they could. Sodalite had a natural affinity to magical forces, and could sense the strength of them in the small hatchling. He made various small spells of calming and protection, to ease the child's discomfort. Ember offered maternal bonding with her warmth and thick mane. Moss seemed most at peace asleep with her.

The poor child was sometimes gripped by seizures, which they worried put him at risk to himself. Sodalite took the decision to change that long, easily tangled body into something smaller and safer. He had made such ritual spells of change before, with other members of the clan. But they were adult dragons who wanted to change and that helped the magic a great deal. He could not say what Moss felt - they still hadn't managed to communicate. Sodalite had run out of spells to help in that regard.

It was a difficult process, but Sodalite felt no resistance to the magic he directed at Moss, and there was no concern of the child moving from the position within the circle of runes. All light vanished from the cave, except the glowing mark on Moss' head and his bright eyes. Then the runes began to glow green, drawing from the power of the Gladekeeper imbued in their lands. A pale fog swirled around the small body, and Sodalite concentrated on reciting the spell.

There was a squeak, and Ember rushed into the circle. The candles in the cave flickered into life again, the runes returned to their chalky white, and the body in the center was even smaller. It was a tiny Fae that Ember cradled. He was unconscious, but otherwise seemed well. Only time would tell if that was the truth and not mere hope.

Moss did make significant progress, and he could see, just not in the same way that other dragons did. His vision was more akin to seeing thermal signatures, but instead Moss saw pulsing emotional auras. The softly crackling yellow-green snake form of his mother and her anxiety; the warm, stable orange heartbeat pulse of his grandmother when she cradled him - a contrast to the quivering violet her large frame became when she worried for him.

Moss couldn't have possibly understood then that his perception of the world was unique. He was trying to communicate by projecting his appreciation and affection to ease the jittering worry of those around him. As a result, language came to him late, and he still understood better when emotions were calm. There was too much sensory overload to understand the meaning of the words otherwise. Besides, emotions told the greater truth.

Moss remains in the Meristema Clan, with the care and support of his family. He wishes he could have an important role, and provide something back to those who love him so much, but accepts that he isn't a strong dragon who can manage big tasks alone.
