Biography
Astatine

Astatine was one of the clan's last hatchlings in the ice domain. Raised by the clan collectively among talks of moving, Astatine ended up imprinting on Venia as much as her own parents. Venia didn't care to babysit her, but started teaching her as an apprentice from a young age. Astatine has grown into some magical talent, but not as much as her or Venia had been hoping. Once Hemlock hatches, Astatine falls by the wayside, and she resents her old mentor for some time.
She was mated to an older wildclaw by the name of Bouvier for a long while. Although their mateship was cold and political in nature at first, they grew closer over time, even falling in love during the clan's first scouting mission to the Forbidden Portal. But while this mission was seen as a success by many in the clan, a growing sense of dissonance festers in Astatine's heart. As Hemlock's power over the clan grows, conflict rises, and erupts into a civil war the ramifications of which will be more far-reaching than any dragon realizes. It's not until Astatine is forced to choose between Venia and her rival Bexelia that she realizes her allegiance still lies with her old mentor. Tagging along to the new lair facing the Portal, Astatine realizes over the following months that her memories don't align with those of the dragons around her. Some differences are obvious: Astatine remembers first meeting Darkshine on her scouting mission, while most other dragons swear she's been part of the clan forever. Others are more subtle. Only Bouvier believes in her, but ironically, his faith in her is what drives him away. Thinking that her strange memories have a deeper meaning than simple Portal madness, Bouvier grows increasingly hostile towards the leadership who claim otherwise. When he vanishes from the lair, Astatine is scared to ask whether or not he fled. Either way, the absence of his belief leaves her addled and unsure what to trust. As the rest of the clan becomes increasingly certain of her insanity, Astatine starts to trust them over her own memories. When Callisto is assigned as her caregiver, it's a relief of sorts. She doesn't have to worry about what's real in her own mind if she simply trusts what he tells her. The nagging feeling that something is wrong never leaves her, but she learns with time to ignore it. |
