Gabriel hatches to the sickly light of the Forbidden Portal in the distance. For the few few weeks of his life, his parents do their best to share his education, balancing Astatine's magic lessons with Bouvier's martial training. He has some talent in both areas, but he finds it difficult to concentrate, distracted by the whispers coming from the Portal. As he learns more of Astatine's arcane magics, he slowly begins to understand the whispers. They too, are trying to teach him. Overwhelmed by curiosity, he sneaks out at night, down the slow slope to the gate. Wyverns circle around him, dark and gleaming, whispering to him their ways. He learns many great and terrible secrets.

He learns, too, that just as void wyverns are driven to share their secrets, spectre wyverns are driven to keep them secret. A spell of infinite silence is cast upon him, covering not only his words but the sound of his footsteps as well. He is scolded harshly upon his return to the lair, but when his parents realize he is not replying because he cannot, their anger turns to concern. They begin speaking of him receiving Hemlock's Blessing. But while Gabriel cannot share his knowledge, he certainly knows now to avoid becoming one of the Blessed. He sneaks out of the lair once more, this time never to return
