That's the thing with magic. You've got to know it's still here, all around us, or it just stays invisible for you.
192.png
And into the forest I go, to loose my mind and find my soul.
Hatchings were guarded events, once a month the WitchBorn would gather in their clans to see their hatchlings into the world with rituals and blessings. the hatchlings, each different and yet each still a hatchling and as curious as any other. not many ChildEaters would have dared go so close even hidden, but she was old and knew secrets to staying unnoticed even by the best among the WitchBorn, Keeva had survived the burnings and the witch trials that came before and after. she had watched many of her own hatchlings burn for crimes uncounted and even sent her lover to die at the claws of angered parents without flinching, now she watched a hatchling tumbling and chirping happily as it explored the clearing- never knowing she was there and that it was running on wobbly legs to it's death.
With a quick movement her mangled claws wrapped around the tiny creature which cried out in shock and fear before her claws closed over it's mouth and Keeva disappeared with her prize. back in her hut Keeva dropped the tiny hatchling on the floor, earing a squeak of protest as it landed with a solid thump and looked around blinking with big, round eyes. normally Keeva felt nothing for her victims, just tools to be used and disposed of, but this hatchling stirred something in her long cold heart and she found she couldn't kill it. the little creature curled against her and she huffed, but placed a twisted hand on it's back as it-she fell asleep and with careful claws she picked up the hatchling and set her in a nest, covering her with a tattered blanket.

Dahlia had grown up in the isolation of her grandmother's hut, learning history and magic from the twisted, ancient dragoness, although Dahlia could never tell what breed her Grandmother was. some days the elder looked like an imperial and others she could look like any number of breeds, but it was never a concern, Dahlia worked the garden and tended her small animals that she used for the meals she ate. she often ate alone as Grandmother worked on spells and potions, she was never allowed in the room that held all the spell books, potions, and the big cauldron that sat on the middle of the fire pit in the center of the room, she had only seen the room once. any herbs she gathered for the older dragoness were left outside the door and Dahlia was left alone to her chores or to find her own entertainment. she didn't remember her parents, only that Grandmother had said she was 'found under the full Crow Moon', she didn't know what that meant, only that she could see the restless spirits near the hut and often spoke to them, it was a mostly one sided conversation with the ghost looking at her sadly. she would shake her head, she didn't understand why they looked sad, she often wondered 'Maybe they're lonely like me?'
Dahlia never saw other dragons as far into the woods as she lived, but she loved climbing trees to see what she could find hidden in the knot holes and burrows. she often found gems and other pretty stones on these wanderings when she was on the ground and would collect them so she could clean them up and carve them into different shapes, she loved carving gems and often carved simple shapes and into figures of animals although she avoided making dragon figures as she had only seen the different breeds when the ghosts showed themselves to her. she often hid her carvings and unfinished gems in a basket she kept fresh flowers in, fearing her grandmother would take them from her, she also made a pretty moonstone knife intending it for decoration although she sharpened it to a razor edge and kept it near her nest and in a pouch she had made for it when she went wandering.

Dahlia didn't mind living with her grandmother in the woods, the older dragoness wasn't cruel although far from affectionate or kind, she wasn't abusive. Dahlia grew up well and was soon a lovely young adolescent just growing into her wings and curious of everything around her, seeing her grandmother leave at night when she was suppose to be asleep she would watch for the elder's return and often saw a squirming bag over the old dragoness's shoulder as she darted into her work room. Dahlia felt curiosity burn at her, but she pretended sleep when the old dragoness checked on her and asked in the morning "Grandmother, where do you wander so late at night? I'd not know you left if I hadn't woken for a drink.", the older dragoness didn't bother to look up at the younger "Meat for my larders child, the night creatures are easier for my old claws to catch." Keeva explained as she looked up at the young dragoness. Dahlia nodded, but took it into her head to look in her grandmother's work room the next time she left for her night hunt.
A few nights later Dahlia sneaked into the work room while Keeva was there and hid in the shadows, unconsciously using her magic to hide herself. the younger watched Keeva take a sobbing hatchling from a cage with several more in it and kill the poor, trembling thing, using the little creature for a spell; Dahlia put both of her claws over her mouth to stifle a scream as tears fell down her cheeks. fear made her slip from the room as quietly as she had gone in and made her lay with her back facing her door and her moonstone knife clutched tightly in her claws as she waited for her grandmother to come in to check on her, she closed her eyes and sent a silent plea that her grandmother would believe she was asleep. "Moon of mercy, moon of light guide me in the darkest night." she woke the next morning still clutching her blade and quickly put it away and went about her chores in hopes that her grandmother wouldn't suspect anything.

The next night Dahlia waited until Keeva was soundly asleep before sneaking into her work room and finding a drake there, his bright blue scales danced in the fire light and his vivid purple wings flashed, he was around her age, a bit older maybe and she was mesmerized by him. walking toward the cage she crooned softly, sweetly, a melody long forgotten from a mother she held no memories of and he looked up startled and looked at her as if she had gone crazy. he stood and she looked him over with a surprising interest, she tilted her head and met his dark purple eyes with curiosity and he rumbled low in his throat "Why are you here?" he asked.
"I live here with an older dragoness, my grandmother." she replied evenly.
The Hag! he hissed and she stopped and tilted her head in obvious confusion. "Tell me what you know, I fear my life has two sides I myself am not aware of and that my Gran is at the center of it." the male looked at her but nodded "I can only say what I know you understand, and I swear it to be truth. The Hag that lives here uses hatchlings for her spells, kills them and uses their blood and bone; she wants me for a spell she hopes to do. something of summoning the Shade or some other such demon." Dahlia looked torn but looked up when he spoke "What is your name?" "My name is Dahlia, but until I've decided my next action I would not have Gran know I've spoken with you." she said gently to which he nodded "I understand Dahlia."
She slipped back to her nest and thought over what she had learned from the drake, the room was full of cages and the cages held hatchlings of every breed and flight, it also smelled of blood and had tools on the shelves that would have been used and smelled as if they had been for murder. she felt sick as she realized the drake must have been telling the truth, the smells alone had made her want to gag, but when facing her grandmother she hid her feelings well and smiled as she went about her daily routine. a few nights later Dahlia went back to that cursed room and looked at the drake "I will find the key and free you, but while I search could we... talk?" and so a friendship began, tentatively the two spoke and told stories, him of his clan and how he had lived in it and her of how she had lived in the hut and her gem carving. "Dahlia, promise to keep your knife close to you until you can leave this place." "I swear I will."

A few nights later Dahlia was again searching for the key and wandering if she would find it at all, under a old book she hadn't looked under yet the key sat innocently as she lifted the book gently. smiling triumphantly she darted to the drake's cage and unlocked it, she never heard the door open, feeling the wooden floor slide beneath her claws she let out a startled gasp as she was slammed into a wall harshly. "I WARNED YOU NEVER TO ENTER THIS ROOM!" Keeva stormed into the room, eyes flashing in outrage as she realized her 'granddaughter's' disregard; Dahlia scrambled to try to dispel the magic holding her, but couldn't. Keeva hissed and pinned the drake to the floor using a spell she had prepared for want of testing it and saw an almost unnoticeable result on the drake, she huffed and turned her attention to Dahlia. the younger hissed in panic and struggled as the elder moved closer "Stop this Grandmother!" she plead "You are no blood to me! No more my family than a chicken!" the elder hissed. seeing the changes in the elder dragoness Dahlia was horrified to see the other was a twisted creature that looked more akin to a fairy tale monster than anything she could have imagined.
Dahlia flinched as she was flung over the roaring fire pit, her scales were seared by the flames, and slammed into another wall and a small sharp object which pierced her side painfully and would eventually cause her to pass out between pain and blood loss, fighting with what magic she could she forced the other back a bit. the flames that had caught on her clothes set the cloth and parchment near her aflame and she fought to get away from the flames, seeing the drake had freed the hatchling and gotten most of them out of the hut she watched the male hesitate before fleeing with them. Dahlia finally passed out and was dragged from the flames by Keeva, the Hag took her captive to a different hiding spot, a cave, when she woke Dahlia desperately tried to work through that her grandmother was not only a monster, but had very likely taken her from loving parents and a family who would have trained her. resentment and anger were new emotions to the younger, accustomed to feeling frustration, but never anger so strongly after all she had grown up more or less alone with Keeva always busy in her 'work room'. "Who am I?" Dahlia asked slowly, biting out each word harshly "The spawned brat of a witch and a hunter, a WitchBorn". Keeva sneered.

Dahlia's mind spun and she felt torn for what she really wanted, hearing footsteps the young dragoness let out a shrill wail that carried and heard the fight out of her prison. she laid, the chain around her neck loose enough not to choke and watched a drake walk into the room, freeing her she allowed him to lead her from the cave and watched within moments the dark mouth of the cave was engulfed in flames and Keeva burned in it. Dahlia felt tears fall down her cheeks as she mourned for the past and everything she had lost within the past few days, she looked at the drake and allowed him to offer comfort to her as she mourned and worked through what had happened. she looked at the male next to her "C-can you tell me where to find a... Ummm... a WitchBorn?", she was lead back to a clan and taken to another dragon who could tell them her lineage, although she paid little attention as she seemed to have gone into shock and become very quiet. she was taken to a healer in a clan and allowed to stay there, she wondered about her friend and if these dragons would help her find someone from her family or at least another WitchBorn so she could figure things out a bit better and maybe learn. she was taken to and got to know her parents, forming a strong bond to both her mother and her father who were eager to see the young adolescent and get to know their daughter, she also formed a strong bond with her elder brother, Lorien and her sister, Selene. "What did the ChildEater name you?" her mother asked as the five lay talking while they had the chance, before her siblings had to return to their clan, "She claimed I already had a name when she took me." she replied unsure if this too had been a lie. "Dahlia." her head snapped up in surprise "It's what your father and I named you that night so long ago." Dahlia smiled.
Dahlia was taken by her parents to a gathering of the WitchBorn, nervousness kept her silent at first, but after a warm greeting from her cousins and aunts as well as others she warmed up to the group. Dahlia told her story to those assembled and was comforted as one of the elders explained what Keeva had been and what she had almost been used for, she was surprised when her father began grooming her feathers gently in hopes of comforting her and she allowed herself to relax. when the topic of her friend came up she smiled warmly "His name was Oberon, I would very much like to see him again.", she explained what had happened and what they had done in the end. she stayed with her parent's clan long after her siblings had left and learned from them as she recovered from the fight and didn't think to wonder why several drakes had disappeared until they came back with a dark imperial who seemed familiar, one of her elders explained that this was the drake Oberon and, in an attempt to save her he had made a deal with the shade, but never knew if it worked. Dahlia greeted him warmly and was surprised by the enthusiastic greeting she received in return, Oberon explained he had summoned the shade, but he feared the spell Keeva had worked had twisted what he had done in some way, what the spell had been missing was simple; powerful magic used in a desperate plea to reverse or stop the impossible, the same magic that draw unforeseen consequences in some situations. they grew closer as she recovered, bonded with her family, and learned magic, and eventually he courted her and she accepted him as her lifemate.

THE CHARIOT
PRyH9lP.png
Idol.png Now a young dragoness, grown and in a clan of her own she works closely with the healer and botanist although her friends include an elf and a Siren with a past similar enough that broth feel comfortable talking about their experiences, although Nanna had grown up knowing her parents while she did not. Dahlia works with her family to find Childeaters, speaking with the dead, while not a unusual occurrence is still not an entirely comfortable task for her. she hadn't spoken to the spirits around the hut for some time before her leaving, they had stopped showing themselves to her and it is something she feels she must get used to again.
She went back to where the hut once stood with her parents and siblings only once to look for artifacts in the ash, she watched the spirits show themselves to her once more and had watched as one by one the victims of Keeva's cruelty left. Dahlia felt a sense of peace as she left that place, the shadows around her claws dancing a bit with her good mood as she walked back to the clan and spoke late that night, telling the clan stories she had heard either while growing up or from her family, watching the young hatchlings listen in mystified silence as the shadows danced to the story.

Dahlia is a sweet dragoness most of the time, playful and kind she loves spending time with those she is closest with and hatchlings. Dahlia often gives out small gem carvings to those she considers her friends although she will never say anything about it to anyone she has nightmares about what happened with the ChildEater that had pretended to be her grandmother for so long and will often stay up carving when this happens. these nightmares often cause her to become skittish around strangers and unsure, seeking her lifemate's comfort most often or that of a friend if she feels the need other times she will wander to a spot only she knows of and stay there for hours until her mind clears. Dahlia doesn't often go to others if a something bothers her and will pretend every thing is ok, she is more accustomed to dealing with things on her own rather than going to others for help although she tries to remember she isn't alone.
Dahlia has trouble trusting dragons, although she will never show her dislike of someone she often avoids new dragons as much as is possible. her trust is not so easily given and although she is far from anti-social, she tends to stay with those she knows and trusts which is usually how she gets to know new dragons within the clan. Dahlia is always willing to help those in her clan as much as she is able, offering comfort and occasionally advice; this often makes her a popular choice for those who act as other's shoulder to lean on for comfort themselves. Dahlia doesn't mind, and will often make tea when she has a distraught visitor and if she has had time to visit the bakery will have some of Damian's baked goods out as well while they talk. she leads of the official rituals within the clan, from the simplest to the more complicated, it is an honor she takes pride in this task.
