While on a scavenging expedition along the Foxfire Bramble, Majolica, Aurum, and Primrose found an egg. That is to say, Primrose found an egg. Last time Majolica and Aurum had gone gathering together, they returned with a bundle of sticks, and a ‘cool rock’ (their words). So this time, Primrose went with them. Not long after arriving in the Foxfire Bramble, Majolica and Aurum had found ‘cool sticks’ (their words). They proceeded to use them as swords. Primrose’s periodic reminders that swinging thorn-covered branches at each other was neither helpful nor particularly safe didn’t seem to stick. She could see how they returned from gathering with nothing but a bundle of sticks and a rock. Majolica and Aurum were still hitting each other with sticks when Primrose spotted the faint glow emanating from a tangle of thorns. She crouched down, and picked at the brambles. Slowly, she uncovered a dragon egg. Primrose called Majolica and Aurum over. Apparently, declaring she had found an abandoned dragon egg was what it took to get them to drop their sticks and listen. The three dragons gathered up the egg, and brought it back to their clan. There, it was taken in by Glimmer and Saturn, who were brooding over their own first nest. This scavenged egg was the first in Glimmer and Saturn’s nest to hatch. From it emerged a fae. They named her Enigma. Less than a week later, the other two eggs hatched, into a pair of nocturnes named Mesmerize and Beguile. As the hatchlings grew, they learned to paint with Glimmer and Saturn, and learned to read with Lizbet. Primrose and Incandescence taught them to sneak out at night, and about the Shade, and Emperors, and other horrors of Sornieth, despite Lizbet’s lectures on age appropriate stories. Beguile had little interest in sneaking out in the cold and dark. He much preferred spending the night in his cosy den in Ariel's Castle, thank you very much. Enigma and Mesmerize, though, loved going out at night. Not for Primrose and Incandescence’s stories (as captivating as stories of the Shade were) but so they could admire the stars. They took to sneaking out on their own after dark, not down to the library, but further up the mountain, where there was a clear view of the sky. They’d find a quiet place to lie, then spend the night gazing up at the sparkling stars, sharing conspiracy theories about aliens, and the Arcanist’s extraterrestrial research station, and how the Shade is still out there, terrorising a planet orbiting that star—no, that one!
