One night, Incandescence and Primrose lured Mesmerize and her siblings Enigma and Beguile out past their bedtime, promising to tell them stories. It could have been a dark and stormy night—that would better have matched the ambience Incandescence and Primrose were going for—but instead, it was bright and clear. Constellations of silver stars sparkled over head; Mesmerize and Enigma could have stared at them all night (though Beguile would trade the view for a comfy bed). They were disappointed to be ushered into Lizbet’s Library, where, by flickering candlelight, they were regaled with a haunting tale of the Shade threatening Sornieth. After that, Beguile was eager to get back to his soft, warm, safe den, and was jumpy all the way back to Ariel’s Castle. Mesmerize, meanwhile, found herself staring at the stars, and imagining where out there the Shade might be now. The next night, Mesmerize and Enigma once again snuck out past their bedtime. Not down to Lizbet’s Library, but up the mountain, where they found a quiet place to spend the night gazing up at the stars. Mesmerize shared her theories as to the current location of the Shade, pointing out distant stars. The next time she was in Lizbet’s Library, Mesmerize found herself leafing through a book of illustrations of the night sky. They didn’t, in Mesmerize’s opinion, capture the beauty of the stars. They did, however, have lines connecting the stars, and illustrations drawn around them, mapping out the constellations. When she and Enigma next went out at night to stare at the stars, Mesmerize borrowed the book of constellations to take with them. Together, they spent the night trying to pick out constellations. Enigma shared a story she’d read about the Arcanist’s lost library. Mesmerize’s fascination with stars, and space only grew. She read all she could find on the subject, and often spouted random space facts she’d learnt to anyone within earshot. Her and Enigma’s stargazing excursions became a frequent occurrence. The two dragons learnt the constellations above them by heart, and gossiped about how aliens were definitely out there somewhere.
