Biography

A brilliant, unpredictable, and slightly unhinged dragon, Sarnath is the founder of the Windhover clan. It was Sarnath who, in the earliest days of the Lightning Flight, hollowed out a solitary cave in the side of a mesa, made it his home, and began amassing an eclectic hoard of magical and mechanical artifacts.

Sarnath's true origins are a secret to all but himself and his mate Ilena, who was initially drawn to him through the power of an artifact she possessed. However, secrets have a way of slipping out. It's been rumored that Sarnath was not always a dragon––that he is is a hanger-on from the Second Age, when the two-legged magi built wonders too great to control. To survive the tsunami that overwhelmed his city when the great reactor exploded, Sarnath took on an immortal dragon-form. In the eons of swirling magical chaos and devastation that followed, as he struggled to make his way through a world bereft of life, Sarnath forgot most of his former existence as a great mage. He even forsook his own name, taking on that of his old ruined home instead.

Still, Ilena suspects, Sarnath probably remembers more of the olden days than he will confess, even to her. Sometimes, at night, lying atop his hoard, he still whispers chants in a tongue no one can understand, as runes glow faintly green from beneath his skin.

In the beginning of the Windhover clan, Sarnath was the chief engineer on the Windhover's great future-predicting Rune Clock. But the time-bending explosion that destroyed the Clock also obliterated Sarnath's confidence and authority. Sarnath went from barking orders to brooding in silence on a hoarded pile of Clock fragments--a silence he has only recently begun to recover from.

In his stead, Gwen rose to the clan's de facto leadership position--and Sarnath, glad to see his workers busy again, gave his blessing. When Gwen initially proposed that the clan attempt to "uplift" familiars as their new grand project, and to forge secret alliances with local Beastclans, Sarnath roused himself enough to give a speech to the Windhovers.

In a moment of honesty over his past, Sarnath declared that dragonkind was not to see itself as superior. For all that dragons had accomplished, the society of Mages of the Second Age had wrought far more, in the short time that was given to them--and he knew this for a fact, as he was there. The Beastclans, Sarnath believed, should be given the same chance... as should any another creatures with the potential for intelligence.

These days, Gwen still bears responsibility for most of the clan's day-to-day goings-on. She decides which familiars are uplifted, and when, and how. But Sarnath has a new plan, now, a secret one, bigger than mere uplifting of a few familiars. He keeps an eye on the machinations of the Acolytes of Erebus, and deploys dragons to keep them in check. He listens to the discoveries of Proteus and Urania, and keeps track of the wars between flights. Once again, Sarnath is coming back to power.
