Ophelia, Part 1, Volume III
Letting go.

~

Ophelia tucked the blankets underneath Pigeon as carefully as she could, and the little Spiral suddenly drew in a shallow breath and released a shaky exhale. Images flashed through her mind and her body felt heavy.

It was happening now, she realized with tears threatening to spill. Pigeon lifted a paw to wipe her eyes before Ophelia looked back down to her curiously.

“Are you okay, sweetie?” the green Guardian wondered, her facial scales creasing with worry.

“I...I’m better now,” Pigeon said quietly, hoping Ophelia wouldn’t notice how faraway her voice sounded. “Could I just...have a glass of water, please? I’m really thirsty...” she trailed off but giving her a small smile.

“Of course,” Ophelia replied softly, smiling back, her green eyes shining down to the little Spiral. “I won’t be too long,” she added, turning around.

Pigeon watched her leave, letting one last tear fall before saying after her, “I love you Mommy...”

Ophelia stopped in the doorway and craned her neck to look back. “I love you too, Pigeon. I’ll be back soon.” And she was gone.

...

As Ophelia collected water from the taps in Alyss’ clinic just down the hall, Ophelia thought to herself. She couldn’t recall Pigeon ever calling her ‘Mommy’ before, but she couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across her face and she sighed. Turning off the taps carefully, she carried the glass back out into the hall.

When she reached Pigeon’s room through her own, Ophelia turned the knob carefully and pushed the door open, slipping inside. Her green eyes gazed down to the small form in the little bed.

“Pigeon?” she whispered sweetly. “I’m back with your water.” Ophelia stepped closer to inspect the still form before her. The Spiral’s eyes were closed.

The poor dear must’ve fallen asleep so fast, the Guardian mused. Ophelia set the glass down on the wooden stand beside Pigeon’s bed. Lifting one paw, she gently tapped the bed.

“Pigeon,” she said again, a little louder.

But the tiny dragon didn’t wake.

Her heart thundering in her chest, Ophelia leaned closer to inspect Pigeon better, and the longer the stared, the more she realized that the little Spiral wasn’t breathing.

“No,” Ophelia choked, tears sliding down her face as she hastily removed her helmet and goggles. “No...Pigeon...” she trailed off, her voice cracking. She took one shaking paw and gently tried to grasp one of Pigeon’s, but it was limp, falling back to the Spiral’s still side.

She had left her, Ophelia raged to herself. She could’ve stayed with her...how could she have let her die alone…

Her entire body shook. Her wings and legs trembled and her lower jaw quivered. Ophelia threw her head back and howled.

...

Every dragon recognized the anguished wails that belonged to Ophelia, and it was then that they knew, with anchors in their hearts, that dear Pigeon had passed away.

Only Alyss and Twig raced through the castle, following the agonized cries of the green dragon. They discovered her hunched over Pigeon’s still body, and she trembled all over.

Alyss couldn’t move as Twig darted forward to reach for Pigeon, tears cascading from his large blue eyes and he cried down to Pigeon and up to his mother.

It couldn’t be true, Alyss thought, his heart racing and breaking. Slowly, he made his way to Pigeon’s bed, his vision blurring as he lifted one of her paws and pressed his claws to her wrist.

She was gone. Alyss squeezed his eyes shut, tears spilling down his cheeks. He sniffled, looking back to Ophelia and Twig with a grief that clouded all three pairs of eyes.

Ophelia wailed. She should’ve been there with her.

Alyss howled. He should’ve done more.

Twig cried. He blamed neither.

...

Forlorn faces gathered later that day. Everydrake stood in a semicircle at the Sea’s edge against a pink and gold sunset, their tears sparkling in the fading light. Before them, the small body of Pigeon lay curled to rest on a driftwood raft that still clung to the sand as little waves tugged the other end.

One by one, each dragon took their turn voicing their sorrows over losing the young Spiral, and recalling more happier times as she’d been surrounded by a loving family, two devoted parents, and one she’d called brother.

Twig stepped forward, removing his hat and placing it over his chest. “Pigeon,” he started, his voice cracking the more he spoke, “you were the real warrior among us, always fighting your illness...” he trailed off before leaning down to place his hat beside Pigeon’s body, and he stepped back.

Ophelia moved next, removing her scarf. “Pigeon...may you stay safe and warm in your next journey.”

Alyss suddenly raced away from the crowd, leaving some dragons stunned as others felt more grief grip their hearts as they murmured to each other. He must be too upset to speak right now.

...

Alyss struggled to keep from hyperventilating as he frantically searched Pigeon’s room. Where was it? He panicked, looking all around until he spotted the small purple plush figure on the floor next to her bed. Alyss felt his heart break all over again, and he grabbed the doll before darting back out.

When he was outside again, his breath caught in his chest as he watched her raft being pushed out into the Sea. He flew faster.

“Wait!” he begged, crying.

Dragons snapped their attentions to him. They saw that Alyss was desperately clutching something plush and purple tight to his chest as he came closer.

It was the mith doll he had sewn together for her.

When he reached them, the waves seemed to bring Pigeon’s raft back onto the sand, and Alyss’ gaze shifted from the toy and back down to the still body. Shutting his eyes tight, more tears soaked his face and he gripped the doll harder. Sighing shakily, he leaned down and placed the plush toy in her little paws before stepping back.

“Pigeon,” Alyss sniffled, “I only hope that...you’re better now...that you’ll never be in any more pain. We all love and miss you, and...I’m sorry...”

“Alyss, please don’t...” Ophelia said hoarsely, bringing him close with one wing. “It wasn’t your fault.”

The splotchy Spiral sighed into his mate’s embrace before turning his sore eyes back to Pigeon’s body.

“Alyss,” Lumiere started, his voice low and soothing. “Never blame yourself for what happened. There was nothing more that you or any of us could’ve done. Even me,” he added quietly. Something caught his sight, and he suddenly lifted his head high to look past the other dragons, a small smile creeping across his blue face. “And I’ll bet you anything she wouldn’t want you to blame yourself, either.” Carefully, he cupped Alyss’ chin with one paw and turned the Spiral’s head.

Alyss’ large eyes widened until they were completely round with disbelief. He could only stare to where Lumiere steered his vision. The others soon followed their gazes and some drew in shaky gasps.

Floating towards the group were two white transparent figures. Both appeared to be Spirals, and one was smaller than the other. Their ghostly jaws opened in wide smiles, and their white eyes shone with love. The smaller spirit moved ahead of the other just slightly to greet the stunned dragons.

One dragon after the next, they exchanged gentle embraces with both Pigeon and Silver as the two spirits made their way through. When they finally reached Alyss, Ophelia and Twig, Pigeon took Twig’s paws in hers, first, and she pressed her forehead to his softly.

You’ll always be the best warrior, she thought to him with a smile. And you’ll always be my brother.

Twig sniffed and more tears rolled down his cheeks. “I love you, sister...”

Pigeon broke away to be with Alyss next. So here you all went, she thought to him, her gentle smile growing.

Alyss’ vision blurred, and more tears rolled down his face with a single blink. “Oh, Pigeon,” he started, his voice shaking. “You never deserved to go through such suffering for so long. You should have been able to fly, to play on the shores, just like...” he trailed off, unable to finish.

I know, Pigeon thought, grasping Al’s claws tighter. Just like Twig and everydrake else. But...maybe I can have that chance now, even if it’s only for a short while at a time.

“I miss you so much...we all do...”

I do, too. I always will. And I’ll always be in your memories, she finished, pulling away to finally stand before Ophelia.

Pigeon looked up to the big green dragon with pleading round eyes, and Ophelia slowly lowered her head so Pigeon could touch her forehead to her own.

Do you know why? Pigeon thought to her, giving the Guardian a small smile. Why I had to leave when you were gone?

Ophelia sank to her knees and sobbed to the little dragon. “Please,” she begged, “don’t say it...”

I didn’t want you to have to see me go.

“I could have stayed with you...”

I didn’t want to see you cry, Mommy. But Silver will take good care of me, now. Just like I know you’ll still care for Twig, Alyss, and everydrake else.

Ophelia blinked her tears away and her jaws trembled as she tried to return the same smile with difficulty. “Goodbye, my daughter...”

Pigeon nuzzled her softly. Goodbye, Mommy. She stepped back to stand with Silver again.

Lumiere allowed a bigger smile to stretch over his face when his bright eyes met those belonging to Silver. “Just don’t keep her all to yourself,” he joked.

Silver’s ghostly face returned a grin and he nodded his head once. He turned his head to look back down to Pigeon, but she was no longer at his side.

The little spirit had found her way to the raft that carried her body, and she peered down, her face hidden from the others. When she leaned down, she picked up the hat that Twig had placed down and twirled over to him. Pigeon outstretched her arms, offering it back to him with a big smile, and the brown and green Spiral took it back carefully, his blue eyes filling with grief once again. When Pigeon spun back and returned the green scarf Ophelia had offered, the Guardian wrapped it back around her neck, and Pigeon smiled wider before she went back again, grabbing the plush doll from its place, and whirled to stand before Alyss.

The splotchy Spiral accepted the toy carefully. The more he inspected it, the more sorrow filled his large eyes. He remained still when Pigeon touched his forehead with her own once more.

I’m feeling much better now, she thought to him, smiling gently before turning to leave again.

She floated to be next to Silver again, and with one last look around the group of dragons, Pigeon made sure that the last faces she saw belonged to Twig, Alyss and Ophelia. Both spirits then turned away, vanishing as they did so.

All of the dragons blinked to clear their tears away with difficulty, and they watched Lumiere’s palms glow a soft yellow. The blue Imperial urged the little waves to carry the raft away, and he and every dragon watched together in silence as the raft took Pigeon’s body into the sinking sun.

...

Hours earlier, Pigeon watched Ophelia leave to retrieve the glass of water that the little Spiral had asked for. She felt a sudden chill invade her body and she sighed, her breathing becoming more shallow.

When a soft light appeared from one corner in her room, Pigeon’s gaze met that of a ghostly Spiral. It floated closer, his large eyes full of sorrow.

Silver gently pressed his transparent forehead to hers. Oh Pigeon, he thought to her, regret in his silent voice, you’re leaving this world too soon, but I heard you calling.

A single tear trickled down Pigeon’s cheek. “I’m going to die, aren’t I?” she whispered.

Yes, Silver thought, grasping her little paws gently. But you don’t have to be afraid.

“Will it hurt?” Pigeon choked.

No, honey, Silver promised. And I’ll take care of you for them.

“Will I see them again?”

Of course, smiled Silver. But there’s something else I have to show you, first.

A sudden shiver shook her body, and Pigeon sighed, her head sinking into the pillow.

Silver shifted his grasp on Pigeon’s paws. All you have to do is let go, he hushed.

She felt him reach through her, straight to her very being. A final sigh escaped her jaws, and Pigeon was lifted from her body. She stood up in surprise, looking all around before stretching her transparent wings.

She no longer felt the fatigue, the pain, or the weakness that had plagued her for her whole life. Pigeon gave Silver a big smile.

Both spirits suddenly froze when they heard the doorknob click.

Silver looked to Pigeon urgently, regret clouding his face.

Pigeon nodded in understanding, and she followed him, both ghostly figures fading and vanishing before the door was pushed open. They never saw the dragon that entered Pigeon’s old room.

“Pigeon?” Ophelia whispered sweetly.
