"Now, what seems to be the problem?"

~
Alyss, Part 1, Volume I
The trouble with wizards.

~

The night was shattered by a blood-curdling scream.

Alyss woke with a jolt and sat straight up in his bed, his green eyes wild. He shot out from under his blanket and went for the door when he fell flat on his face, cursing himself as he untied his tail from the bedpost. He bolted out of the room and into the hall, keeping both ears out.

It sounded like it was coming from the other end, so that's where he flew. Other dragons opened their doors and were grumbling in confusion as Alyss whizzed by.

The howls were very close now. Alyss realized they were coming from the wizard's room. He burst the door open and saw Dewlap standing in the centre of the room, his body appearing tense and rigid, his face scrunched up and eyes closed as he continued to scream.

Alyss started towards him. “Mister Dewlap, what's—”

“Don't touch me!”

The Spiral stopped. “I'm here to help you. Can you tell me what's wrong? Does anything hurt?”

“Everything!”

“Can you move anything?”

No! Ah—it feels like teeth are shocking me!”

Whispers sounded behind Alyss, and he twisted his neck around to see dragons crowding around the open doorway. A grey Mirror shoved his way past them, and Alyss was relieved to see him.

“Rockpools, could you get me my satchel? The blue one, it should be hanging by my drawer.”

As Rocky left in a hurry, Alyss hastily shooed away the other dragons. When Rocky returned, satchel in his claws, Alyss pounced and dug through its contents until he found what he was looking for.

“What's that?” Rocky asked.

“Blue entoloma,” Alyss explained. “Right now it's the only thing that'll help him.” He held the fungus close to Dewlap's nose while keeping it as far away from his own as possible.

At first nothing happened, then the doctor and the Mirror started noticing Dewlap's screams lessen as his body loosened. The pale Nocturne slowly opened his eyes and closed them again as he suddenly inhaled deeply, and crashed to the floor, asleep.

Alyss eyed the blue entoloma before stowing it away. “I forgot how fast this worked.” He turned to Rocky and said, “Think you could help me?”

After heaving Dewlap onto the bed, Alyss followed Rocky out and shut the door behind them.

“Uh, you wouldn't happen to know what's wrong with him, would you, Al?” asked Rocky.

Alyss frowned. “Not the slightest idea. I've never heard of the kind of pain he'd been experiencing, but then again I've never had a wizard as my patient. I'm thinking it may have something to do with how his magic works somehow, but I'll need to talk to him when he fully wakes.”

“Sure sounds like a possibility.”

“He seems to spend a lot of time with you, so is there anything you could tell me that might help in any way?”

“I don't know him that well,” Rocky joked. “He has only been here for a short while.”

“You're right of course. I'm just at a complete loss, and it also has me quite intrigued. If I can figure out what it is and its cause, it'll be a huge help for me to learn about it and heal other dragons who might also experience the same thing Dewlap did. Poor fellow.”

“Well, even if we had known each other longer, I bet he still wouldn't tell me everything that happens to grumpy old drakes.”

Alyss chuckled. “Grumpy old drakes may know many things, but they always think they don't need—” he didn't get the chance to finish when he passed out and ended up sprawled on the floor, snoring.

Rocky just stood and stared down at the Spiral. “Now who's gonna help me carry him?” he asked nodrake in particular.

...

The next morning, several hours later, Dewlap was finally awake. Alyss made sure to bring up a chair next to the bed and plopped himself down, his full attention on the Nocturne.

He threw a smile at the wizard. “And how are we this morning?”

Dewlap closed his eyes when the splotchy Spiral scooched his chair closer. “Better, thank you.”

“Those were some screams you made last night. I imagine the pain you felt was excruciating.”

“Guess I'd be lying if I said it wasn't.”

“And has this happened before?”

“No.” Dewlap's response was a little too quick.

Alyss raised a scaled brow. “Are you sure? I'm not here to argue with you, it's just important for me to know in case other dragons experience the same thing you did and I'll know the right course of action to take.”

The Nocturne quietly sighed. “I'm sure.”

“All right then.” Alyss pushed the chair back as he got up. “If you're still feeling tired, take as much time as you think you need to rest. Feel free to get up any time if you're up to it.” With that, he left the old dragon in peace and quietly clicked the door shut on his way out.

“How is he?”

A voice behind him almost made him leap out of his scales. “Oh, April! You sure know how to sneak up on somedrake,” he laughed.

“Everydrake keeps saying that!”

“And Dewlap's fine, just exhausted from the trauma last night, I'm sure. It might be best to not disturb him right now.”

Aprilfish scowled and looked away.

Alyss took note of her frustration. “I know you're concerned for his well-being, but perhaps you could visit him later?” he suggested.

April's expression softened slightly. “I'll do just that, thanks.”

“Oh good,” Alyss smiled as he turned to leave. “I'm sure he'd like some company once he's more rested. Have a lovely day,” he wished her as he made his way down the hall.

April waited until Alyss was out of earshot. “Oh, I'm sure he will,” she said to herself.

Alyss, Part 2, Volume II
Promises.

Continued from Twig Part 1 & Prosper Part 1

Later that evening, Alyss reviewed his notes at his desk, recalling the events earlier that day.

Before he met up with his son Twig to see Ophelia, Alyss had led Prosper to his office to care for a Spiral child that the younger dragon discovered alone whilst on his way to the market. After showing Prosper how to feed and wash little Amity, Alyss convinced and reassured Prosper that Amity would remain under Alyss’ watch until the child’s strength returned.

Then, Alyss’ mate, Ophelia, had every right to be upset with their son Twig for taking Pigeon out of the safety of the castle without their permission. Alyss had soon calmed her down, however, pointing out that nothing had happened to Pigeon, and her condition hadn’t worsened. Twig had apologized to his mother, promising to be more careful in the future, and Ophelia gratefully accepted.

Alyss resumed studying his work, his scaled brows furrowed in concentration and frustration. What would help Pigeon that he hadn’t already tried? What could heal her without causing her further discomfort?

He slumped his shoulders in defeat. He didn’t know. Alyss had attempted every remedy he knew from his books, yet nothing seemed to have any positive effect. Even Lumiere, as powerful as the Imperial was, claimed to have no knowledge of Pigeon’s illness, but Alyss had noted the faraway looks of thought that Lumiere made whenever Pigeon’s sickness was brought up, and Lumiere didn’t seem to want to share those thoughts...

Sighing, Alyss buried his face in both paws and his eyes began to sting.

“Trapped soul...”

Alyss sat straight up and froze before wiping his eyes dry. He cast swift glances around his office, but saw nothing.

“You so desperately want to help her...”

It wasn’t a voice he recognized, and it hissed all around him.

“Yet nothing seems to work...”

“Who...who are you?” Alyss’ voice trembled. “Wh-what do you want?”

“To free you from your misery.”

Alyss’ green eyes rounded when he saw it now. A long, twisting body bore four dark metal rings at its base, and a beaked face stared at him with eyes as green as his own.

shadow serpent

“Wh-what are you?” Alyss stammered.

“Oh there’s no need to be afraid,” the stranger said with a creeping grin. “I’m the answer to your problems! I only wish to free you from the pain and suffering that you and dear Pigeon share...” it trailed off as it began loosely wrapping around Alyss’ wings and chest.

“How do you know her name?” Alyss wondered.

The creature seemed to pout, if it were possible for beaks to do so, as it willed the top page of the Spiral’s notes to lift gently up for him to catch it. “Being unable to find a cure for your own patient must be heartbreaking...”

Alyss’ paws shook slightly, softly rattling the paper, and he felt tears well in his eyes again.

“I can free you,” the creature said with a smile, “by healing her.”

Should he trust this strange being? Alyss’ didn’t know. But what if it was right? Could this be Pigeon’s only hope?

“I...” Alyss started, his voice quaking with emotion. “I don’t know—”

“Then are you so willing to risk not taking this chance?” the creature pressed, wrapping around him tighter. “Suit yourself,” it hissed, letting him go and starting to spin away.

“Wait!” Alyss cried.

The stranger turned back around slowly and faced him again, giving the Spiral another stretching grin.

“What needs to be done?” Alyss’ voice choked. “Please...will you help her?”

The serpentine figure drifted closer, its green eyes seeming to swirl. One of the dark metal rings floated towards Alyss, and it halted just before his own widened eyes.

“First thing’s first,” the creature softly sang as the metal band started to spin. “Just gaze into the hole...”

Alyss soon found that he couldn’t move, blink or even look away from the centre of the band. All he could manage were short gasps as he felt tugging on his mind and breath.

“...and satisfied will be her thirst...”

Oh gods, he couldn’t speak. His body began feeling limp and far away, his heart beat slower and his grip on his body was failing.

“...for your beautiful sou—”

The creature suddenly screeched and Alyss’ body shuddered violently before jerking back, and he sucked in an explosive gasp. His vision blurred as he watched a lean brown shape spring to the creature, kicking and whipping its coiled tail out. When Alyss’ vision cleared, the serpentine figure was gone, and he now stared to Twig in disbelief and the sound of Amity's wails snapping him out of his trance.

“Did you SEE that, Dad?!” Twig exclaimed over Amity's crying, his dark eyes round with excitement. “I was all like WHOOSH and then KAPOW! What was that thing? And that white mist...”

Alyss couldn’t speak and he trembled uncontrollably as his mind raced. What had happened to him? Yet...he still knew...that thing...it had tried to rip him from his body...

Help. He needed help. Lumiere and Alga had travelled someplace else, Eleven knew where. And he didn’t want to alarm King Kelpbeard or Queen Saline. Maybe...

“Dewlap,” Alyss barely whispered. “I have to speak with him...”

“But we don’t know when he’ll be back—” Twig protested.

Please...”

Twig said nothing more, instead racing away into the hall. He darted around every corner and flew down each hall, nearly bumping into startled dragons on the way. When he finally reached the front gates, he pushed the heavy doors open as hard as he could. He saw Bogatyr and Urdin watching and waving down four draconian shapes in the distance. Twig squinted before frantically waving his own arms. When Dewlap and the others landed, Twig looked desperately up to the old white and black Nocturne.

“Dewlap! It’s my dad—something’s wrong with him!”

“What happened, Twig?” Dewlap demanded anxiously.

“I—I don’t know, there was this weird floating snake thing in his office. I don’t know what it was doing to him, but...I think I saw Dad’s ghost...”

Dewlap froze and stared down to him. “What?”

“And he wanted to talk to you—”

“Where is he now?”

“Still in his office, I’ve never seen him so scared.”

Dewlap turned to Bogatyr and Urdin, telling them to escort Sylvester, Bubbles and Coral back inside the castle, as the orange Nocturne and blue Guardian could only stare to Coral in silent shock. Dewlap barked another order to them and soon they led the others inside, closing the heavy iron and wood doors behind them. Dewlap raced after Twig, following close behind the young Spiral as wild thoughts raced through the old Nocturne’s weary mind.

What was going on? First he’d had to deal with Glaw and his dragons stealing the souls of innocents...discovering Coral had been in hiding at that dreaded place all this time and still not knowing where her brother Mudflat was...and now...was something else attempting to take Al’s soul? Could it be something Glaw had enchanted? But the Ridgeback had no idea where their island was...

Did he?

Dewlap shook his head, clearing his mind as they finally reached the doctor’s office. Rushing inside, they saw him hunched over a small crib, shivering but hushing softly to the wailing Amity until she soon settled down.

“Alyss, what’s wrong?” Dewlap wondered, his dark brows furrowing in concern.

“I—” the splotchy Spiral started before glancing over to Twig, who stared back with worry. “I’m sorry, Twig. Could you please wait outside?”

The little brown Spiral was about to protest, but a look from Dewlap changed his mind. On his way out, he clicked the door shut behind him.

Alyss couldn’t help but release a half-hearted chuckle. “He’ll likely be listening in...” he trailed off, shuddering. Watching Dewlap, the Nocturne flicked his wrists and a pale green mist drifted to the door, sealing the spaces to the sides, top and floor.

“I know you don’t want him to worry,” Dewlap said, “but you can trust me.”

“I know,” Alyss hushed. “I asked f-for you...” he shivered again, his teeth chattering.

“I’ll get you a blanket,” Dewlap offered.

“N-no...I’m not c-cold,” the Spiral refused softly.

“I know, but it’ll help.” Dewlap waved both paws and a dark blue blanket, decorated with small fish weaving through kelp, materialized as if from nowhere and wound loosely around Alyss. Soon the Spiral pulled it around tighter, thanking the Nocturne quietly. Dewlap gently guided him to the desk to sit, and willed another chair to him and sat before Alyss.

“When Twig came to me, he mentioned...” Dewlap began, “a being resembling a snake, and he saw...” he broke off hesitantly.

Steadily, Alyss ceased shaking, peering straight to Dewlap. “I didn’t know who else could help me. I thought...with the power that you had before, that you could be the only drake to help me now. Ever since Ophelia found Pigeon and brought her in, I wanted to do whatever it took to figure out what was making her so sick. I researched everything, barely resting until I knew what was wrong with her.

“And then...it came. It promised that it would help us. It knew that I wanted nothing more than to heal Pigeon, that I...couldn’t forgive myself if anything happened to her.

“But I agreed. I wanted it to help me feel like I wouldn’t have to keep worrying all the time over Pigeon or all of you. And I felt...like I was being dragged from my body, and I couldn’t keep my grip and I couldn’t move. Twig scared it away, and that’s when he saw...my soul...that thing was taking my soul...it was taking me...” Alyss trailed off, keeping his round eyes on Dewlap as the Nocturne now appeared to sit rigid.

Dewlap’s heart quickened and he furrowed his dark brows. “Did it say anything else to you?” he asked urgently.

“To free me...” Alyss trailed off softly, his own heart thundering as his eyes widened in horror at a sudden realization. “By healing her...oh no...” the Spiral broke off, his body beginning to tremble at the horrible thought.

“It’s going to take Pigeon!”
