Continued from Maple Part 1 & Ophelia Part 1

The Seaside Clan, somewhere in the middle of the Sea...

The grey sky continued to mourn as light rain fell. A gentle breeze picked up, as if trying to lift the dampened spirits of the dragons on the little island.

Some of the island's Clan residents still gazed out to Sea, where young Pigeon's body had been cast adrift, their hearts still breaking for her and for her grieving family. But they found some comfort, for they knew she was with Silver, now. Each dragon took turns meeting with Alyss, Ophelia, and their son, Twig, offering their deepest sympathies and prayers for Pigeon, some tears still fresh.

“Papa?” a small voice piped, catching the attention of an old Nocturne.

Dewlap looked down to his side, his pale green eyes meeting the blue belonging to one of the three infants. “Yes, Anemone?” he asked softly.

“Why did Pigeon go?”

Beside Dewlap stood Trove, her brown eyes betraying the same sorrow as the rest of the clan. She tried her best to blink back her tears as she sent Anemone a sad smile and bent down close to her and other two young Spirals.

“My love,” Trove began, her voice beginning to break, “Pigeon was just very sick. And sometimes...sometimes dragons who get sick don't get better, and they have to go somewhere else.”

“I don't want to get sick,” their youngest daughter, Pearl, murmured.

Next to Pearl and Anemone was Tidepools, their brother. “Nodrake get sick, okay?” he squeaked, in an attempt at a serious tone.

Before Trove could speak again, she felt warm claws grip hers as Dewlap's paws took them in his. “Pigeon won't be gone forever,” he said to her and their three children. “You remember Silver, don't you?” he asked, and the three little dragons all nodded. “Pigeon can visit us whenever she wants, just like him.”

Trove stood up to nuzzle him. To the children, she said, “Come, let's go see Alyss.” They followed her closely to where the doctor and his family stood, while Dewlap hung back as something caught his eye.

Moonrise was now the only dragon still gazing out to the open Sea, to where Pigeon's body had been cast when everydrake else had either gone back inside the castle or were speaking with Alyss. Dewlap strode over to where the elderly grey Spiral stood, his feet barely sinking in the sand or making any noise.

“Moon?” the Nocturne wondered once he reached him.

The Spiral flinched slightly in surprise, for he hadn't heard Dewlap approaching. “Oh, Dewlap,” he said, breathing a sigh of relief. “It's such a shame isn't it?” he asked, nodding towards the Sea. “Losing one so young and innocent.”

“Of course,” Dewlap answered quietly.

“Oh, Dewlaaaaaap!”

The Nocturne froze. He knew that voice, and groaned to himself. Looking back, he saw the familiar blue Imperial a distance away.

Moon looked at Dewlap curiously. “What business does Lumiere want with you now?” he wondered. “He's been inviting you to his void a lot more often these past few years, eh?” When the Nocturne looked hesitant in answering, Moon pressed, “And, during those years, it truly amazes me how much more...spry you've become.” He cocked his head slightly to one side and chuckled. “You're not suddenly getting younger, are you?”

Before Dewlap could reply, Lumiere suddenly appeared between them with a poof! His belly was to the sand as he rested his chin in his claws.

“It's just tragic,” he began, “what happened to dear Pigeon, wasn't it?” the huge Imperial asked them, and they both nodded, lowering their eyes. “And sometimes even magic isn't enough,” he added, mostly to Dewlap.

“Speaking of which,” Moon rasped. “I don't mean to pry, but Dewlap was about to tell me...something about magic and your meetings?”

Dewlap opened his maw to speak. “It's—”

But Lumiere beat him to it, answering Moon. “Dewlap and I wanted it to be a surprise if it worked, but since time ran out, you all might as well know...we were strengthening our magic to be of more assistance to Pigeon.” He glanced over to Dewlap for a moment, and the Nocturne seemed mildly stunned.

“Yes,” was all Dewlap managed.

Moon released a long sigh. “If I had known what you were up to, perhaps I could have strengthened my own magic, as well. For Pigeon, you know.”

“Love the spirit, Moon,” Lumiere started with a small smile, “but you're not a young drake anymore, and I'd hate to be responsible for any...accidents, you know?”

The elderly Spiral cocked one brow as he glanced from Lumiere to Dewlap, then nodded to them both. “Very well,” he said, giving in. “Now, I must say a few more words to Alyss before I find Lily and retire to my room.” He tipped his hat in a farewell gesture, and began slowly making his way over to where the doctor still stood with his family.

Once Moon was out of earshot, Lumiere suddenly brightened and broadened his smile at Dewlap. “So? Ready for your next lesson?”

But the Nocturne only scowled. “You really think now's the best time? You haven't even told me why you've been pushing me and my magic. All those lessons...they weren't really for helping Pigeon, were they?” he accused with a snarl. “We could have tried harder to save her instead of wasting time.”

Lumiere said nothing for several heartbeats, his smile had vanished during Dewlap's rant as the Imperial studied him.

“Like I said,” Lumiere finally answered, “sometimes magic isn't always the answer. Not for dragons like Pigeon, anyway. You knew, deep down, that even you couldn't help her. And neither could I.”

Dewlap's blood boiled with fury as his heart broke for Pigeon and her family again. Lumiere was right. Dewlap had tried, time after time, using his magic to figure out Pigeon's illness. The little Spiral had been so weak and fragile her whole life, but every spell he tried or invented wasn't enough.

What if there had been another way?

“There's no use blaming yourself,” Lumiere said, as if reading his thoughts. “There was nothing more you could've—”

“Stop,” Dewlap warned, his voice barely audible. “I need to talk to Alyss, too. And I'm not going with you again until you tell me what's going on,” he finished curtly, starting to walk away.

One of his feet sunk and he paused, glancing down to the sand. Three different sets of tracks led away from this shore and the castle. The print his foot sank into belonged to a large Guardian. The other two were Mirror...

“When you're done grouching,” Lumiere added from behind, “I still have more to teach you. But it appears there's somedrake who still needs your help...”

Dewlap turned around, but the Imperial was already gone.

The old wizard peered back to where the sets of prints led. As the wind ruffled his hat and robes, he closed his eyes, lifted one paw, and concentrated. Opening his eyes, a wisp of green light flashed across the tracks, and transparent, draconian figures emerged from the prints, and were stalking away.

A red Guardian and gold Mirror had been following closely behind another, grey Mirror, and their wisps soon vanished.

Dewlap sighed. He would first pay a visit with Alyss.

And then it would be time to have another talk with Rocky.
