Welcome to Tribulation, a tale of hardship and family. Feel free to post on this thread with comments, questions, and general screams of angst.

This exists in the same universe as Consanguinity, my other lore thread, but you don't need to read that to read Tribulation.

Tribulation is the prequel of Retribution, and needs to be read after this story.

Warning for a PTSD Breakdown in Chapter Nine, body horror in Chapter Fifty-Six, as well as an overall warning for general unhappiness.

There was no doubt to anyone that this was a caravan of traveling performers, as their wagons were just as bright and diverse as the dragons that were riding in them. In one of the many wagons was a young couple, proudly traveling with their hatchling son, who was just old enough to talk. The larger skydancer was playing a flute, while the smaller of the pair was singing to the hatchling, smiling as they watched their son drift off into sweet dreams. But as the hatchling was almost asleep, their wagon screeched to a sudden stop, along with the others in the party. Harsh voices hissed out from the darkness and the young parents hid their child as best as they were able, binding his mouth closed so he would be unable to cry. The harsh voices came closer now, and the larger of the mated pair did his best to barricade the wagon as to protect his family. Even closer now the voices came, and then a group of bandits tore through the flimsy wooden walls of the wagon, weapons drawn and dripping with blood. The larger of the two skydancers jumped ahead of his mate, to shield her from the bandit’s attack. Cold steel cut through the dragon as he collapsed in front of his crying mate, drawing his final, ragged breaths. The hatchling cried, but the rags rendered him silenced as he watched both of his parents meet their end right before his eyes. Harsh knocking jolted the skydancer awake. He looked around with wild eyes, his breathing unsteady. Ah yes, the usual nightmare, but he didn’t have time to sit and dwell on his past traumas, as the knocking only got louder. “May I help you?” the skydancer said as calmly as he could as he went to dress himself, still shaking from his nightmare. “My apologies for waking you at this hour, Sir Faron, but His Highness King Regium sent me to send you this letter right away. He said it was of the highest importance.” squeaked a voice from the opposite side of the door. Faron opened the door to see a rather tired looking young mirror holding a letter for him. The mirror held out the letter for the knight, which he took from him gently. The skydancer opened the letter and looked over the contents with an growing scowl. Faron finished reading the letter, then folded it neatly and tucked it into a pocket. He then turned to the mirror who was staring at him with stars in his eyes and said “This is urgent, so I will trust you to deliver this message to King Regium. Tell him...Tell him that I will return as soon as I’m able, and that I’ve already departed the Kingdom’s gates by time he’s received this message.” The young mirror nodded and sped off, and Faron finished preparing himself for his quest. It was still too early for the rest of the Knights to have begun to have awaken for the first patrol of the day, and so Faron scribbled down a note that simply said “Left on a quest for the King - hopefully will be back soon. Ehlen is in charge until I get back. ~ Faron” and left it where hopefully the other knights would find it. He wished with every fiber of his being that he had the time to stop and bid his friends goodbye, but he knew that there was no time to waste. Faron considered stopping by the temple that his dearest friend, Dua, resided in to tell her about his quest; but he knew his duty to his King and kingdom were more important than his emotions, no matter how much he wished differently. Faron sighed. It wasn’t that he was unhappy with his lot in life or anything. On the contrary, he was happy that he was able to help protect innocent people so that no one would ever have to wake up reliving the untimely deaths of their loved ones. But still, he wasn’t looking forward to his given quest. King Regium was plagued with a mysterious illness - a secret that was known only to a select few, and his condition has appeared to worsened. So Faron, the Kingdom’s head knight was chosen to travel to Dragonhome to locate a rare herb in hopes it would help the king. The knight had already passed through the quiet streets of the Kingdom and was on the outskirts now. It was still very early, and so all was quiet, save for the maniacal cackling and mild explosions that rang out from an old tower. Faron sighed as he passed by and said “Gods, I wonder what sort of chaos he’ll cause while I’m gone?”. Surely everything would be fine, and it was just his nerves getting the best of him. Faron had never really left the Tangled Wood before, and the idea of traveling so far away from his home made the knight nervous. Faron shook his head, as if to physically clear out his overwhelming sense of dread. As he continued his solo trek through the forest, and after many days of travel the thick trees began to thin out, and the soft ground became harder under his feet. If this was any indication, Faron was getting near the border of Dragonhome. He took a deep breath as he left the comforting darkness of his homeland and stepped onto the dry earth of the Earthshaker’s domain. The bright sun that was beating down on the cracked earth was far brighter than anything Faron had ever seen, and he struggled to adjust to the overwhelming changes. “Gods, how does any dragon live like this?” Faron muttered as he began to search for a place to rest, refuel and gather information. The skydancer saw a small settlement on the horizon, the architecture was just as foreign to him as the land he was in. Instead of the stone and iron Faron was used to, this town had building made of clay and unrefined rock. As he got closer to the settlement, the unbearable sunlight was taking it’s toll. “By the Eleven, please let them be friendly.” he thought as he collapsed from exhaustion on the threshold of the town. Chapter Two --- Faron groggily awoke in a dark, cool room, his armor was piled in a corner nearby. He rubbed his head and sighed. Here he was, alone in a foreign land, stripped of both his pride and belongings and with a headache on top of it all. Every muscle in his body was screaming at him to lie down and rest a bit more, but Faron knew that he had no time to spare, and so he checked over his armor and put it back on after he was sure that nothing was altered while he was unconscious. “Damn this accursed sunlight!” Faron thought as he stepped out of the dark, cool room, going outside once more. He narrowed his eyes and looked around. It appeared to be the same town he had collapsed in, the low buildings looked about the same as far as Faron could tell, though he noticed it wasn’t nearly as bright or hot now. “Oh, Earthshaker bless! You’re awake!” called out a voice from somewhere behind Faron. The skydancer spun around, sword drawn and very clearly startled. The spiral bit her lip and looked down, to which Faron felt guilty about causing the seemingly harmless dragon discomfort. Faron wordlessly sheathed his blade and looked mildly embarrassed. “Aw hun, don’t look so embarrassed now. You hit your head awfully hard an’ all.” Faron furrowed his brow in confusion. “I did?” The spiral nodded with a soft look in her brown eyes. “Oh my! You must have hurt yourself worse than we thought! When you came into our humble little town, you collapsed and hit your head real hard. Now some folks reckoned you were going to be on your way to the Gods from that fall, but I took you home and tried to mend you as best as I was able.” Faron blinked as he was trying to process what the overly chatty spiral was saying. “Ah, excuse me ma’am. While I appreciate your hospitality, I really do need to get on my way. Is there any place where I can buy supplies?” he asked as politely as he was able. The spiral nodded and said with a smile, “Sure, let me take you shoppin’!” She then wrapped her arm around his own and a growing sense of dread overtook him. The spiral kept talking about this and that, and kept staring at the skydancer. Faron nodded when she took a breath but wasn’t really listening to what she had to say. His thoughts were occupied by his home. Was everything going well? Did his friends and fellow knights resent him for leaving without saying goodbye? He had a bad feeling about seeing the alchemist, Corvo, up and experimenting at that hour, but he was sure it was just another harmless prank or something. It had to be, for his own peace of mind. The pair finally made their way to a small line of stalls not too far from the town. “Are any of these vendors herbalists or healers of any sort?” The spiral who was still clinging to Faron drew herself even closer and whispered “I’m sure whatever is plaguing you would be nothing a kiss wouldn’t solve.” Faron pushed the spiral off of him with eyes lit up with cold fire “I need to locate a rare herb so that I may go home and save my kingdom. I have no time for the likes of you.” The spiral fell to the ground, weeping at his harsh words. Normally Faron would have felt bad and apologized for his harsh actions, but he had no time to spare. The king's life depended on how quickly he was able to return with the herbs that were required. Faron had no idea how long he’d been unconscious, and the creeping dread from before came back in full force. His head was still killing him, and everything about Dragonhome felt foreign and wrong to the knight. Faron stopped at several booths trying to find the information he sought after, as well to restock on supplies. He picked up a few small trinkets to give to his friends as an apology for his sudden departure, including a nice necklace he thought his fellow knight Ehlen would like. Not wanting to misplace it, he decided to wear the necklace until he could give it to her. Eventually Faron made his way to a vendor who happened to have the herbs he was sent to find, they didn’t come cheap, and Faron was a bit taken back at the price, but rare goods are to be expected to come at a premium, and it wasn’t like the king wouldn’t pay him back for the trouble. Faron was still exhausted from his quest, but he now knew that his travels were nearing an end. The thought of finally returning was enough to put the pep back into Faron’s step, and it felt like his return home was moving along swifter than the leave. Oh, how Faron missed the dark and cold Tangled Wood, the soft ground and faint glow of the local flora filled him with happiness. He was home, and he all but raced back to the Kingdom. He needed to deliver the herbs to the King after all, and he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t looking forward to sleeping in his own bed again. As much as the knight wished to travel non-stop until he reached the Kingdom, his body screamed at him to camp for the night. The Kingdom would still be there when he got back in the morning, and he was sure the king would be fine for just a few hours longer. For one in his life, Faron slept easy and had peaceful dreams of his home. The skydancer didn’t rest long, however, as the thought of being so close to home made it hard for Faron to stay put for long. But the closer the knight got back to home, the more worried he became. Faron was close enough where he should have heard the usual hustle and bustle by now, but things were eerily quiet. The old sense of dread was back with a vengeance as Faron tore through the forest. Something was horribly wrong. The knight closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he got to the gates of the Kingdom. “Dear Gods, please let everything be okay!” Faron prayed as he opened his eyes. But instead of the familiar, towering gates that guarded his home, all that Faron saw was rubble and what looked like corpses strewn about. “NOOOO!” Faron screeched as reality hit him. The knight fell to his knees and wept, the loss of everything he held dear was too much for him to bear, and so he wept until he had no more tears to give. Eventually, he got up from the spot that he kneeling at and made himself get up and search through the ruins, for answers and survivors alike. ”If I were here, would this not have occurred? Could these people have been saved?” Faron thought as he combed through the rubble of his former home. It became very clear that the gates were the most in tact of all of the Kingdom, and that there were probably no survivors of this disaster. This didn’t stop Faron from looking at every nook and cranny, and he was especially dreading to see the fate of his home and of the Temple of The Shadowbinder - where his closest friend Dua lived and worked. ”Gods, please… let there have been some survivors!” he prayed as he found the wreckage what was hardly recognizable as the Temple. In the ruins, he found a shattered pearl - and if he had any more tears to give he would have broken down then and there. This had to been Dua’s Pearl, this was were her private chamber was located. They say that a pearlcatcher’s Pearl is the physical embodiment of their soul, and they rarely will survive the loss of their pearl, and so they will guard their Pearl with their lives.. If her Pearl was shattered here, Faron was sure she was dead. Faron fled the ruins, as the thought of his closest friend passing in such a horrible manner was too much to bear, and so he continued on his his fool's errand of trying to locate any survivors. The further in the Kingdom that Faron traveled, the greater the damage. By time he reached the outskirts, there was virtually nothing left save for the tell tale signs of a massive explosion and burn marks where the alchemist’s tower once stood. Faron recalled his worry about Corvo’s experiments as he left. “Damn that trouble making fool! He must have been the cause of this!” Faron cursed as he examined what was left of the tower. If Faron took his time to stop him, would this tragedy have happened? Would Dua and the others still be alive? Faron couldn’t handle being in the ruins any longer, he’d seen all he needed to, and there wasn’t enough bits left over of any dragons to give anyone a proper burial. Feeling so overwhelmed with negative emotions, Faron did the only thing anyone could do in his situation. He ran as far as his body would take him, then laid out in the forest floor. He didn’t bother making a camp, and in fact, would have been more than happy to never have to get up again. So he sunk into an uneasy sleep, tormented by the ghosts of the residents of the Kingdom who were screaming for Faron to help him, but no matter how fast he ran, he couldn’t save them. Ue34vuS.pngChapter Two
---

Faron groggily awoke in a dark, cool room, his armor was piled in a corner nearby.

Now some folks reckoned you were going to be on your way to the Gods from that fall, but I took you home and tried to mend you as best as I was able.”

Faron blinked as he was trying to process what the overly chatty spiral was saying.

Only a desperate fool would sleep in the middle of a forest full of tricksters unguarded after all. With a heavy heart, the skydancer decided to keep walking until he found a reason to stop. He had nothing left, no home, no friends and no purpose. He couldn’t fulfill his vow to protect anyone, in the long run. He left and everyone was dead. So Faron wandered through the Tangled Wood, and at every place he visited, no dragon had dared ask him many questions. From just one look at Faron’s hollow eyes they could tell that he’d been through hell, and no one was eager to ask him about it. He carried on in this manner, drifting from place to place, stocking up on supplies and hoping he’d find a reason to stay somewhere. As Faron was preparing to leave this new town, he had heard two dragons gossipping, at first Faron heard nothing of note, but then - “Oh yeah, It’s terrible what happened to the Kingdom, wasn’t it?” “There weren't any survivors from that, right? There couldn’t have been!” “Yeah, you’d think so but I heard that there were some weird dragons - if you could even call them that- heading away from the wreckage almost immediately.” This was groundbreaking! Either these were survivors or the culprits, and now Faron had a reason to go on again. He knew he had to do whatever it took to find them - even if he had to travel countless miles.Too much was at stake here, especially if the culprits indeed were alive and free. Faron went over to question the gossiping dragons, and his fierce determination turned the questions into an interrogation very quickly. After he was sure he got all the possible information from the pair, he apologized for his odd and alarming behavior, and went on his way. ”They were heading towards the swamps near the Sea of a Thousand Currants” Faron repeated in his head over and over, burning it in his memory as he traveled towards the swamps. Meanwhile, deep underground somewhere, Corvo knew this day would come. He knew the only reason he was still alive was because he was deemed “useful” - or more accurately, because he conceivably was the only one who could fix the mess he’d caused. It wasn’t like he wanted to leave his home in ruins, and the casualties he caused certainly weren't on the agenda. Above all else, he never planned on the handful of survivors to have mutated into bogsneaks either. No, Corvo only wanted to understand how the world worked. As he was being forced down the hall to the impromptu leader’s lair, Corvo entertained the thought of claiming that he was sorry. He was a good enough actor to pull it off, after all, but he arrived at her door to her chamber before he could hatch a plan of escape. Ah well, he still had time. After all, she’d go into some long monologue or something and he’d manage to slip away again. One of the guards that was dragging Corvo knocked on the door to the lair and called out “Lady Cereza, we’ve brought the alchemist to you as per your request.” There was an odd noise that sounded like a hatchling’s cry being muffled, but the guards payed it no mind. Corvo assumed that Cereza had found another victim to torment, or that he’d finally gone mad, as either seemed quite likely at this point. “Bring him in.” commanded a voice from the inside. And so the guard opened the door that led to Cereza’s makeshift throne room. It was dimly lit, much like the rest of the underground caverns they had spent weeks digging out. Cereza was stretched out on her makeshift throne of bones and looked quite pleased with herself - never a good sight to see. Cereza smiled as Corvo awkwardly bowed, if you can call that odd, jerky movement bowing, anyway. And now Corvo was worried, as Cereza looking this happy could only mean horrible things were in store. She was a fae princess that was visiting the Kingdom ,Corvo’s home, when he accidently destroyed it ; and the shock of the mutation and the loss of her ability to ever return to her home was too much for her to bear. Combined with her desperation this had warped and twisted Cereza’s mind so much that she grew more sadistic by the day. Her mind was another thing Corvo was responsible for destroying, in a way. Cereza began to speak, and snapped Corvo out of his wandering thoughts. “So… I hear you haven’t been making any progress?” Cereza said, still with a smile. Corvo gulped, knowing very well that he’d likely leave this chamber in shreds. “Well, I wouldn’t say I’ve made no progress.. but things haven’t been progressing like planned, no.” Corvo said, trying to stay calm and if luck was on his side, get out of this unharmed. Cereza chuckled, her eyes shined with delight at his fear. “Ah, no matter.” She said, and with a snap of her claws summoned her guards. She turned to one and said “Bring her to me.” and then motioned for the guards to leave her chamber. Cereza turned back towards the alchemist with a grin most foul. “Perhaps this will help you..?” she said as one of her guards returned holding a hatchling that had a rag in its mouth, to muffle the sound of its crying. Cereza leaned forward and said in a sickening manner, “I’m giving you this hatchling. It is not only your duty to raise her, but you are to successfully replicate the mutation and reverse it. If you can’t do this successfully… I will personally see to it that your mother, mate… and child... will be slaughtered before your very eyes. Is this clear?” The room spinned. Corvo expected his own execution, not to doom his family and this...this hatchling! Every fiber of his being wanted to refuse this, but he knew that to defy Cereza’s order would mean that the only dragons he cared about would suffer unjustly. “I said, alchemist, is that clear?” Cereza barked, and Corvo nodded. Cereza motioned for the guard to hand the hatchling over to Corvo. Gods, were hatchlings normally this heavy and this vile smelling? Corvo winced. He could hardly take care of himself, after all, and now the fate of both himself and his loved ones rested on this burden. It was a bit more cozy than a cell, and had some homey touches, but for the most part, Corvo wasn’t allowed to leave his room. And now he couldn’t leave his room that now was home to the hatchling as well. He wasn’t back in his room for more than a moment or so before there was a knock at his door. “Yes?” Corvo hissed in an annoyed manner. Today had been hard enough without anyone else barging in, and quite frankly he was too panicked about being charged with being a father to really be in the mood to chat. “Now, is that anyway to talk to your own mother?” croaked a voice from the other side of the door. Relief washed over Corvo, and he replied “I’m glad you’re here, Mother. I uh… need to know how to take care of a hatchling.” and opened the door. His mother scoffed and said “Of all the pranks you could try to pull, you go fo-” She stopped mid sentence when she saw the hatchling that Corvo was still carrying. “Please, for the love of the Gods tell me that that’s not a real hatchling.” she said. “Unfortunately it is.” Corvo muttered and his mother sighed. “Our kind and merciful leader tasked me with raising her, and told me that if I’m unsucessful in replicating and reversing the mutation she’d see to it that you, Dolum, and the hatchling would be slaughtered.” he continued. “So if she dies we all will. I... need your help.” His mother shook her head and said “Gods, we’re doomed. Shadowbinder take these old bones now!” she said. Corvo huffed and said “Look, if you’re not going to he-” His mother rolled her eyes and said “I never said I wasn’t going to help you! I have no plans to die do to your negligence. Now, let me see the hatchling.” Corvo handed over the hatchling with relief, she was starting to get heavy. “She appears to be in fine health from what I can tell. Wonder what sorry dragons Cereza had to cut down to get her hands on this hatchling..? Ah well, not that that matters at all. Tell me, does she have a name yet?” Corvo shook his head, looking rather detached from his mother's chattering. His mother handed back the hatchling to Corvo and said “Hold her while I try to make her some sort of bed… and take that rag out of her mouth before she chokes on it.” Corvo sighed and took the rag out of her mouth and immediately regretted that decision. The hatchling’s shrieks filled the air, and Corvo was so startled that he nearly dropped her. “HOW DO I GET THIS THING TO STOP?!” he shrieked, somehow he was louder and more shrill than his child. “TRY ROCKING HER!” his mother yelled back over the din. “YOU WANT ME TO THROW A ROCK AT HER?!?” he yelled in confusion. The hatchling still was throwing a fit and Corvo looked like he too was on the verge of tears too. “NO YOU IDIOT, MOVE HER GENTLY BACK AND FORTH IN YOUR ARMS!” Wincing, Corvo started to rock the baby in his arms. The crying lessened but still she was bawling. “She’s still crying?!?” Corvo said baffled. “I don’t know?! Try singing or something.” said his mother, already exhausted. She had her work cut out for her on this one. Corvo attempted to sing the hatchling a lullaby but his shrill, horrible excuse for a singing voice made the hatchling cry more. Corvo looked down at the hatchling and sighed. “Would you shut up for the love of the Shadowbinder?!?” he frowned at the hatchling, who looked even more sad but stopped crying a bit. “We need to name you still… hmm… Bedlam?” the hatchling started crying again. “Would you prefer to be Vivian?” she was still crying, but it seemed to lessen a bit. “Alright, what about Marilyn?” the hatchling stopped crying, and giggled a bit. “I guess that’s it then.” Corvo said as another dragon slipped into his quarters. “Why, I think that’s the only dragon that’s ever liked the sound of your voice.” said a sly voice with a touch of playfulness. Corvo’s eyes lit up at the sight of his mate, Dolum. “...Please tell me why you’re holding a hatchling, and for the love of the Gods don’t tell me it’s yours.” Dolum continued on in a more serious tone. Corvo frowned and said “She’s mine… and if I can’t replicate the mutation and reverse it in a timely manner, Cereza promised me that you’d be slaughtered.” Dolum looked over Marilyn with cold eyes and said “Not that you’re capable of it… but don’t get attached. Our lives depend on it.” and with that he turned and left. Corvo’s mother coughed and said “He’s got a point, you know.” she said gruffly before she too got up to leave. Corvo looked down at Marilyn. She wasn’t so bad when she was quiet like this. Marilyn stared at him with big eyes as Corvo tried his best to look away. “They’re right… I can’t get attached.” he said as he sat Marilyn down to go to his work bench. Marilyn started crying again and Corvo sighed. “Look, I can’t work and hold you at the same time, alright? You might knock something over and grow another head or something.” Marilyn stopped crying. For whatever reason she found Corvo’s voice comforting; and so Corvo was forced to talk about whatever just to keep her from crying, much to his annoyance. After several hours and a sore throat later, Corvo had produced a vial full of some sort of strange liquid. “You’re not going to like this, I’m afraid.” Said Corvo in a hoarse voice as he went to administer the brew. Marilyn squirmed away and tried to hide under the rag that Corvo was using as bedding. Corvo then did the only reasonable thing one could do in the situation - he yanked the rag off the makeshift bed and grabbed Marilyn before she could hide somewhere else. “Well...bottom’s up.” he said as he forced her mouth open and poured the brew down her throat. It felt like an eternity before the contents of the vial were emptied. Marilyn started to cry again, but this time Corvo offered no attempt at consoling the hatchling. Suddenly, she stopped crying, and in fact she seemed like her breathing became very irregular and quite shallow. Quickly realizing what was happening, Corvo picked up Marilyn and held her close. He just kept rocking back and forth ever so slightly, consumed by guilt. The other lives he took was a complete accident, but this… oh Gods, where did he go wrong? Now the hatchling was going to die, and so was everyone else he loved. If he did something differently, would Marilyn be on the verge of death right now? Would everyone still have been alive and well in the Kingdom? It was no secret that Corvo was never much in tune with either his emotions or his moral compass, but it was in this moment where the guilt of everything he’d ever done that led up to this moment washed over him. He wanted to cry, but felt it was too selfish. No, this was his punishment, and he was going to take it like he deserved. Ue34vuS.pngChapter Four
---

The guards escorted them back to his quarters.

I... need your help.”

His mother shook her head and said “Gods, we’re doomed. His mother handed back the hatchling to Corvo and said “Hold her while I try to make her some sort of bed… and take that rag out of her mouth before she chokes on it.”

Corvo sighed and took the rag out of her mouth and immediately regretted that decision.

Nothing was more important to him than Marilyn in this moment. Everything that led up to this moment was selfish, and not even Corvo could live with himself if she died alone. The knocking increased with intensity, but still Corvo ignored it. Not even the Shadowbinder herself could get him to move away from Marilyn right now, her breathing being more and more shallow and irregular. “Are you honestly so caught up in your experiments that you can’t open your door?!?” scoffed Dolum from behind the door. The door swung open, and an irritated looking Dolum walked in, holding a meager looking plate of food. “You missed this pathetic looking excuse for dinner again, I know it’s awful but -” He scoffed, looking down at his mate who was sitting on the floor, clutching the hatching like it was the most important thing he’d ever seen. “Why are you sitting there when there’s work to be done? I’d like to keep my head attached.” Dolum said as he sat the plate down, crossing his arms with a scowl. Corvo winced a little at his harsh words. “... Fetch Mother.” he managed to choke out, his voice cracking. “She’s...she’s dying. I can’t do anything but she might be able..This is my fault, I can’t leave her like this. Please ” Dolum rolled his eyes and muttered “Fine, fine, I’m on my way.” Corvo clutched Marilyn even closer, as if it would prevent Death from ripping her out of his claws. It felt like an eternity before Dolum returned with Corvo’s mother, with each ragged breath Marilyn took being more painful than the last. Corvo kept muttering “I’m so sorry” over and over, and his mother had to pick up her jaw off the floor when she realized what was happening. Surely this couldn’t be her son, being sincerely sorry about anything, but she knew that she wouldn’t have been rushed here if he wasn’t being completely serious. Noxia, Corvo’s mother, was an experienced healer with many years of practice behind her. If anyone was qualified to help, it was her. Noxia set down her bag and went to pick up Marilyn, which Corvo reluctantly handed to her. She looked over the hatchling, and after a minute said dryly “I leave you alone for a bit and you nearly kill her, I should have known you’d find some way to screw things up like this. Bag.” she said, holding her claws out. “Well? Can you do anything? I don’t want to di-” Dolum said before getting cut off by Noxia’s glare. He handed the bag over with a glare of his own. Noxia dug out several herbs from the bag and started mixing them together. Dolum coughed and Noxia snapped “If you don’t keep your mouth shut and let me work, we’ll all be dead come morning. Unless either of you are also about to drop dead, shut up and let me work!” Dolum looked down embarrassed, and Corvo just stared at his mother, praying that whatever she was doing would work. Noxia administered the medicine and sat back. “I’ve done all I can do, if she lives through this it’ll be a miracle...If not, well I’d say it’s been a pleasure knowing you but that’d be the biggest lie I've ever said.” she rasped. Dolum replied with a “Humph!” and Corvo went over to hold Marilyn again. Dolum rolled his eyes at his mate’s actions and muttered something under his breath about being a soft hearted fool, but Corvo ignored him. Why did he have to get so attached to her? What snapped in his cold, small heart that made him feel this strongly? Was this guilt or love? Whatever it was, it was leaving him in agony, as if every pained breath Marilyn took was his own.
