Cordelia and Macchiato knew each other well enough that as soon as they joked about the extravagant clothing they'd seen, it was a done deal that those items would be purchased. At least Cordelia couldn't lose him in the crowds with his bright purple sylvan wings. Macchiato affected a prim, prancy gait to make her laugh as they browsed. The scarf he'd pusjed on her had the benefit of being able to muffle her giggles.
"Ah!" Cordelia stumbled, the long end of the scarf catching on something.
"Eep!"
She looked down to see an Obelisk pup in a heap on the gold silk.
"Oh dear! Here, let's get you up. Did I trip you with this scarf? It's quite long..."
"Uh. No. Kinda. The light shined patterns on it and I wanted to catch them..."
"Ah! Quite the huntress we have here then, hm?" Macchiato said, coming over to see what had held Cordelia up.
The little Obelisk puffed her chest out with pride.
"My dad is the
best kind of hunter. A
treasure hunter!"
"Ohhh. Hang on then, is your dad, um-"
"Cobalt?" Cordelia supplied.
"Yep!"
"Well, you must be one of his most prized treasures! I'm sure he wouldn't want to lose you!"
Cordelia smiled. Macchiato was always so good with children.
They headed to the Scavenger Hunt information stand with their little companion. Her name was Xenia, a d she was
very curious.
"Where are you from?"
"The Everbloom Gardens. "
"Where's that?"
"The Viridian Labyrinth, which is-"
"What's it like?"
"Well. It's full of life. Vibrant and colourful. Very many natural treasures to be found, " Cordelia winked.
Xenia heaved a sigh too weary for her young age. "I wanna see it."
"I'm sure you will. Especially if you have family there."
Cordelia stopped off to get them all snacks from the food stalls, and to perhaps spend a little more time with Xenia. She felt a connection to her that she couldn't quite explain. A kinship stronger than that she had felt with any other member of her family.
"It was lovely to meet you, Miss Xenia." Macchiato bowed when she was returned to her father's side.
"And we'll see each other plenty over the next few days, I'm sure," Cordelia added, ruffling Xenia's mane.
"Yeah..." the small dragon sulked, no doubt feeling betrayed for having her adventure cut short.
When the sky brightens with the sunset, Cordelia is already at the beach, waiting for Mudpuppy's arrival. She had pestered Macchiato to stay around the beach for the past few hours as she was so excited for the underwater exploration. She had missed out last time, and there was no way that she would miss a second when given another opportunity.
She put the headlamp on as soon as it was in her paw, not hesitating for a moment to be concerned about how it might look, and helped Macchiato fasten his to speed up the process.
Cordelia rushes into the oncoming waves as soon as the mages have completed their spells and Mudpuppy gives the signal. Her sturdy body stops her stumbling against the pull of the tide. And- yes! Her fur isn't heavy at all! Not weighed down and waterlogged, she has a much greater freedom of movement than any other time she has been in the water.
It doesn't take long for Macchiato to catch up to her and they explore the reef together. It's stunning. Whenever she sees bright flashes of seacreature bioluminescence, she finds herself imagining Xenia chasing them.
