On the morning of the reunion’s final day, Roland awoke unusually early, and decided to head down to the beach. Very few dragons were about; those who were seemed to be engrossed in their duties as they prepared for the day ahead. A few times he offered to help, but everyone he asked kindly pushed him away, encouraging him to enjoy the day. In order to keep out of the way, Roland just kept walking down the beach, following the morning waves out to the tidepools.
The cabana constructed overlooking the pools was empty; LimuKai & Quell’s family must have been awoken early by the hatchlings and gone off elsewhere. Roland stepped carefully around the tidepools, following the narrow strips of sun-dried rock between the shallow puddles of water. The tide had come and gone overnight, leaving the pools refreshed with new life; tiny shrimp darted edge to edge, while some vivid scallops rested in the shallow depths. Roland paused on a large rock outcropping, taking in a deep breath of sea air and - wait, what was that?
A most unusual rock was poking out of one of the tidepools - it looked far too large and weighed down with barnacles to believe the tide had carried it in, but it definitely hadn’t been there before. Roland took a tentative step closer, and at the same time, the rock wiggled, and he saw it for what it truly was - an egg.
