Roleplayers who prefer to imagine your own boat, skip to the image of Captain Praa! Each one has a member of Captain Praa’s crew on board, but as you approach, they jump out and take flight, leaving you to handle things on your own. The boat you climb aboard is much like the others, with high sides, a mostly flat bottom and sharp bows. The only difference between them seems to be the colour of their sails, which varies between canvas white, faded black and deep Arcane pink. Three wooden struts cut across from one side of the hull to the other, doubling as benches, and a pair of oars is balanced across them, for use when the sails are furled. There’s a round hole in the strut nearest the bow, which supports a single mast with a boom and triangular sail. A second triangular jib sail is attached between the mast and the bow, and there’s a tiller attached to the rudder at the stern. It’s a relatively small boat compared to your size and simple compared to the Chalcedony Cutlass … but it’s still quite complicated for you to sail by yourself! You quickly sit on the bench closest to the stern and grab the tiller. There’s currently no wind, but it’s such an unnatural calm that you’re certain magic is responsible — and you don’t want to be caught out when the wind does start to blow. https://imgur.com/KH3LzmI.png “An excellent choice, my hearties,” Praa cries as she soars over the little fleet of sailing boats, taking note of those who chose to sail to their next Trial. “A true pirate’s place is right here on the open sea, mastering the wind and sailing for the horizon! Fair winds and following seas to you all!” Captain Praa approves of your choice of craft! [br][emoji=pirate ship size=1] “Now, run up your Jolly Rogers and stand ready to make sail,” the Captain orders. The sewing session seems so long ago now! You retrieve your flag and look around for how to attach it. There’s a stick with a flag mount attached to one of the ropes that runs up the mast. You fix yours in place, haul on the rope, and watch as your Jolly Roger slides smoothly up the mast. Once you’re sailing, it should blow in the wind very nicely! Once all of the balloons, crystals and boats have been claimed, Captain Rafferty returns to the Jolly Wavehopper and gives a commanding whistle. Several members of his crew leap over the gunwales and swoop downwards. They hand out a roll of parchment to each recruit, while Rafferty addresses you from his perch on the very tip of the bowsprit. “You have made it all the way to the final Trial: the hunt for treasure!” This announcement is met with a roar of enthusiasm from the recruits, yourself included. A treasure hunt is the perfect end to the Pirate Trials! However, Rafferty isn’t done, and he raises his hands to plead for quiet as he continues: “Now, this will test all of your skills and knowledge at once — map reading, navigation, physical strength, mental fortitude, ability to handle a vessel, perseverance … perhaps even bravery and your mastery of weapons or parlay! Remember: this is your last chance to show us that you’re a real pirate, worthy of a place aboard one of our ships, so you’ll be wanting to do the very best you can.” Rafferty checks that his crew have finished handing out the parchment before he finishes his speech. “My crew has given each of you a treasure map, which you can read and interpret however you wish.” You quickly unroll the parchment. The map shows a section of the Starfall Isles, and though nothing is labelled, some locations are drawn in enough detail to recognise them: you quickly identify the Astrolodome, the wedge-shaped Tourmaline Archives, and trees that mark the southernmost edges of the Starfall Strand. The Tourmaline Archives have been circled, and written along the edge of the ring is a string of numbers — could it be a shelf reference, meaning that there’s treasure hidden in Arcane’s libraries? Three curves have also been drawn on the parchment from edge to edge: they look like the paths of stars, plotted by a navigator to determine a specific position. Perhaps the location of treasure? They intersect on the shore by the Starwood Strand. The most traditional pirate mark surely must represent treasure of some kind. Day Six
You leap over the railing of the Jolly Wavehopper into the shallow waters of the bay and splash your way over to the sailing boats. Each one has a member of Captain Praa’s crew on board, but as you approach, they jump out and take flight, leaving you to handle things on your own.

The fierce Pearlcatcher pirate, Captain Praa

“An excellent choice, my hearties,” Praa cries as she soars over the little fleet of sailing boats, taking note of those who chose to sail to their next Trial. “A true pirate’s place is right here on the open sea, mastering the wind and sailing for the horizon! Fair winds and following seas to you all!”

Captain Praa approves of your choice of craft!

“Now, run up your Jolly Rogers and stand ready to make sail,” the Captain orders.

The map points to three different locations! Which do you choose?
 1. Use the reference to find treasure in the Tourmaline Archives

 2. Follow the celestial navigation marks to the Starwood Strand

 3. X marks the spot! Find pirate treasure in the Crystalspine Reaches

Each one is a different coloured inverted teardrop, but otherwise they seem to be very much alike. Unlike the other crafts, the balloons aren’t attended by pirates, and instead are tethered to stakes in the ground. You take command of one of the balloons and examine it more closely. Below the inflated gas bag hangs a square basket made of woven wicker, which creaks gently under your hands when you take hold of it. Mounted above and centred in the open throat of the balloon is a burner with the pilot light shining blue and ready for action. In addition to the cables that connect directly to the basket, several smaller lines hang down from the balloon. You give one of them an experimental pull and, peering through the balloon’s throat, you see a vent open up. There are two rows of sandbags stacked around the interior of the basket, multiple ropes coiled around the outer lip and, attached to the back of the basket, a clockwork mechanism that controls a propeller. The balloon is relatively small compared to your size and very simple compared to the complex mechanical workings of the Jolly Wavehopper … but it’s still quite complicated for you to fly by yourself! You check the stakes and the ropes attached to them are firmly secured, then scramble into the basket. The charming Fae sky pirate, Captain Rafferty

“Oh good, good — I’m so glad you like the balloons!” Rafferty cries as he flutters along the beach, admiring the colourful balloons while also taking note of those who chose to balloon their way to their next Trial. “I’m sure it’ll be an adventure getting them where you need to go. Let’s hope the wind’s blowing in the right direction, haha! May your travels go like clockwork!”

Each one has a member of Captain Starbeard’s crew standing beside it, but as you approach, they leap into the air and fly back towards their ship, leaving you to handle things on your own. Though they vary in exact shape and size, the crystals all seem to have been cut from the Crystalspine Reaches: you recognise the distinctive colour of Pink Chalcedony. They have been roughly hewn into lozenge shapes, with a distinct keel on the underside and a flat top. They all have a cylindrical device attached to the rear. You select a crystal that seems large enough to support your weight without sinking and hurry over to claim it. On closer inspection, you realise that runes have been inscribed around the circumference of the crystal. They pulsate slowly in sequence, and the effect looks like a light gently spinning around the craft’s midsection. You assume this is how the crystal is defying gravity! The tube-shaped metal contraption at the back is similarly covered in spiralling runes and symbols. There’s some kind of trigger mechanism on the side and a control stick that adjusts the angle of the funnel-like rear end of the cylinder. You spot an engraved maker’s mark and a bit of text that reads: Chalcedony-Powered Rocket Thruster. The runes must harness the magical radiation from the crystal itself and convert it into propulsion. You’re both impressed and a little bit afraid of the concept. Still, it’s too late to back out now: all the other craft are taken! Your crystal bobs when you climb aboard, but it stays afloat. “Arr, you picked out the crystals — a brave choice indeed!” Starbeard cries as he strides along the beach, taking note of those who chose to fly aboard a crystal to their next Trial. “I see you like an unusual challenge: very fitting, for an Arcane pirate! Arr, you’ll be like shooting stars leaping through the skies!” Captain Starbeard approves of your choice of craft! [br][emoji=planet size=1] “Now it’s time to fly those Jolly Rogers of yours and ready yourselves for adventure,” the Captain orders. The sewing session seems so long ago now! You retrieve your flag and look around for how to attach it. There’s a telescoping flagpole attached to the propulsion device, with mounting clips for a flag. You fix yours in place and extend the pole: when you’re under way, your Jolly Roger should stream out behind you for all to see. Once all of the balloons, crystals and boats have been claimed, Captain Rafferty returns to the Jolly Wavehopper and gives a commanding whistle. Several members of his crew leap over the gunwales and swoop downwards.

The forbidding and ghostly Sandsurge pirate, Captain Starbeard

“Arr, you picked out the crystals — a brave choice indeed!” Starbeard cries as he strides along the beach, taking note of those who chose to fly aboard a crystal to their next Trial. “I see you like an unusual challenge: very fitting, for an Arcane pirate! Arr, you’ll be like shooting stars leaping through the skies!”

Captain Starbeard approves of your choice of craft!

“Now it’s time to fly those Jolly Rogers of yours and ready yourselves for adventure,” the Captain orders.

They hand out a roll of parchment to each recruit, while Rafferty addresses you from his perch on the very tip of the bowsprit.

“You have made it all the way to the final Trial: the hunt for treasure!”

This announcement is met with a roar of enthusiasm from the recruits, yourself included. A treasure hunt is the perfect end to the Pirate Trials! However, Rafferty isn’t done, and he raises his hands to plead for quiet as he continues:

“Now, this will test all of your skills and knowledge at once — map reading, navigation, physical strength, mental fortitude, ability to handle a vessel, perseverance … perhaps even bravery and your mastery of weapons or parlay! Remember: this is your last chance to show us that you’re a real pirate, worthy of a place aboard one of our ships, so you’ll be wanting to do the very best you can.” Rafferty checks that his crew have finished handing out the parchment before he finishes his speech. “My crew has given each of you a treasure map, which you can read and interpret however you wish.”

You quickly unroll the parchment.

Then there’s the bold X scrawled on a small crystal island close to the edge of the map nearest the Crystalspine Reaches. The most traditional pirate mark surely must represent treasure of some kind.

After giving everyone a few moments to take in the map, Rafferty continues: “You must use your chosen craft to reach the treasure, retrieve it, and return to us here in this bay. You have until this time tomorrow. Happy hunting, mateys!”

The map points to three different locations! Which do you choose?
 1. Use the reference to find treasure in the Tourmaline Archives

 2. Follow the celestial navigation marks to the Starwood Strand

 3. X marks the spot! Find pirate treasure in the Crystalspine Reaches

A treasure hunt? She is excited! "Well, well, well, this is an interesting conundrum," Morene muses to herself. A talon lightly skims along the map, following her eyes as she reads what lies upon it. "Raid a library, go digging in the forest, or look for something in the crystals..." She thinks carefully, each option is very appealing, but she is definitely conflicted about what to choose. As fun as it would be stealing from Space Dad's library, she isn't that sort of thief. Given that it's a shelf reference, that's almost certainly a book. She immediately engages the crystal's engine to send her rocketing off to the Starwood Strand! If she's quick enough, she might be able to swing by the library! She definitely wants to check that out if she can!

Asthereim couldn't help but puff out his chest with pride at Praa's praise. At that moment, he really did feel like a pirate!

Then he was given a paper parchment, and he unrolls it to see that it's a map with three different destinations. He saw the X at the Crystalspine Reaches, and thought 'Why not? X Marks The Spot!'.

Setting the sails and steering, Asthereim turned his ship triumphantly to his goal.

This was why they wanted to become a pirate. It wasn't to prove himself or anything (He doubted he could ever do that), no, Thermador was interested in the artifacts and gaining rare and unique items. He looks down at the map, scanning all the stuff and all the unique additions for why the captains could've given this map in particular. He first scans the spot in the Tourmaline Archives and notes the location as being a rather well known library, probably nothing much hidden there (at least anything he had never heard of). He also spots the markings around Starwood Strand and notes that they are nice and seem to be oddly precise. He starts to turn the boat towards that direction, before finally noticing the large X on the page at the Crystaline Reaches, marked big and bold. 'What in Sorneith is that?' Thermador thinks to himself 'I didn't actually think they would put something that obvious on here. Or, maybe...' Thermador slightly shifts the direction of the boat to start heading towards the quickest apparent route towards the large X, finally not overthinking everything.

Matlaline wished desperately that he had done something the classical skull and bones motif rather than his bird. It wasn't a flag meant to be viewed from afar. You needed people to know who was coming, and ideally surrender before you got there. It had been silly of him to treat the pirate trials like a library exam. Well now that he had made his bed, he apparently had to fly it. Matlaline raised his flag and then studied the map he'd been given. At this point, he thought he had a good enough bead on the captains to decipher who had made which markings. It was therefore an easy choice which treasure location to pick. Setting his course and hoping he could beat the other recruits there, Matlaline set off in his crystal skiff; a little bird of hope fluttering above him.
