WELCOME TO JINA'S KINGDOMLOCKE!
(oh lord what am I doing)

Three dragons stumble upon what used to be a flourishing village in the Cloudscrape Crags. Emphasis on "used to be." It probably would still be flourishing if there was anyone left alive. Will our heroes meet the same fate as the vanished clan, or will their little kingdom survive where the other failed?

I've been wanting to do a nuzlocke of some kind for a few years now, but a lack of lair space and an unhealthy attachment to my old dragons always kept me from getting started. My very large hibden solved both these problems (I grind in the coli probably more than is healthy, is all I can say), and recently I was inspired by seeing the Kingdomlocke version of the usual Pinkerton nuzlocke (see "Rules" below for link to the original)... so within 36 hours I tweaked the rules into my own flavor of Kingdomlocke, and yeeted most of my main dragons into "hell." No, that's not a euphemism for the hibden, that's the actual name of the tab they're in.

And then I hatched the two loveliest G1s I've ever been lucky enough to hatch, so if anything happens to them early game I am going to be SO SALTY.

A few notes before we start:
  • I love coming up with stories and lore, but the main reasons why even my old dragons are 95% lore-less is time (I don't have a computer and writing on mobile takes more free time than I usually have) and coding (I AM SERIOUSLY THE WORST CODER KNOWN TO MANKIND OH GOD). I am going to try to keep this thing as up to date as possible, but there might probably will be delays. I will be keeping track of everything offline, so lack of updates do not necessarily mean lack of progress!
  • My one true love is coliseum grinding. I train other people's dragons for fun, completely free for new players (contact me if you are in need of getting a dragon to level 25!), and during flight festivals I usually try for this coli challenge that can take me the entire week to complete. (Hence those dragons in the "invisible" tab of my lair. Though I'm sure you haven't seen them, because they are invisible.) I haven't decided if I will be pausing the Kingdomlocke during flight festivals or while I'm doing training, but for sure updates might be slow during those times.
  • The Rules and Events and Jobs below are all slightly tweaked from the original Kingdomlocke version into what I am tentatively calling a Dynastylocke. They are also woefully untested. I am testing as I go, we die like men in this house. If anyone wants to test them along with me, I'd be honored and grateful for feedback!
  • I don't own any dice at the moment, so for all dice rolls and coin flips I will be using Google's digital dice and coin toss. For all randomizing I will be using this random number generator.
  • Subscribe to the thread for updates! If there is an interest I might start a pinglist, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Rules
adapted from the original Kingdomlocke 2.0
  • Begin with 3 level 1 dragons. Keep all dragons of the kingdom in the first lair tab. Ignore the dragons in the other tab, those are...invisible. Yeah. Let's go with invisible. *whistles innocently*
Of the initial 3 dragons, pick one randomly to be the first Royal. The eldest of their surviving children will be the Heir Apparent, and their other surviving children will be Junior Heirs. The Heir Apparent will take over the throne should the Royal retire of old age or die of Pinkerton causes.
  • Draw a Pinkerton pull each day to decide the fate of your kingdom. See "Daily Draws."
  • If a dragon faints in the coliseum or rolls a death in the Daily Draw, the dragon is exalted, unless they have extra lives or the rules state otherwise. If the Royal faints in the coliseum, they are immune from death unless it is a Death Streak; one of the other two dragons on the team will be randomly chosen to take the fall for their Royal.
Extra Lives mean that even if your dragon dies, they come back from the dead once per life. For example, if they faint in the coliseum, they do not get exalted but lose a life instead.
  • The Guardian's Charge: Any Guardian may choose to give up one life, extra or final, for any dragon in the kingdom who is about to be exalted. If the Guardian survives, the saved dragon becomes that Guardian's Charge and mate (even with no Matchmaker in the kingdom). The Guardian can only use this ability once. Bonding rules do not apply; if the Charge then dies before the Guardian, the Guardian will not also die (see "Daily Draw").
  • If a dragon reaches level 10, it gains an extra life. If it reaches level 15, it gains another extra life.
  • If a dragon reaches level 25, it "retires" and takes its place among the Revered Elders. This dragon is unable to die or be affected by challenges, locking in its job from being taken; however, it cannot battle in the coliseum or breed due to age. In the case of the Royal, the old Royal will resign the throne to their Heir Apparent (or to a random dragon if there are no Heirs).
  • Names are generated randomly if there are no Scribes in your kingdom.
  • You cannot use genes or apparel or eye vials on any dragon if there are no Tailors or Alchemists in your kingdom.
Exception: If you find a gene or apparel or eye vial in the coliseum, a dragon on the team at the time can use it immediately if desired. Two pieces of apparel add up to one extra life for the wearer. If no dragons on the team can wear apparel, a random dragon in the kingdom can wear said apparel immediately.
  • You may use skins/accents on a dragon at any time, as a tattoo of sorts, but they cannot be removed unless the dragon is exalted.
  • You can change battle stones and stats on a dragon at any time.
  • You must flip a coin for each egg hatched.
    • Heads: The hatchling is born alive. Hooray!
    • Tails: The hatchling dies in the egg. Mourn, and exalt.
  • Every day, you must roll a d6 for every hatchling in your lair. On a 4, the hatchling did not make it through the night and is exalted.
  • For every unhatched egg found during the challenge, purchase the cheapest hatchling of that element off the auction house. They will join your kingdom as a found hatchling. They are still subject to the daily rolls for survival.
  • When a dragon reaches level 5, it must roll for a job. The Royal and Heir Apparent are exempt from this. See "Jobs."
More than one dragon can have the same job. Job dailies can stack. (thanks to @FlyingButtress for the rule change!) Job dailies DO NOT stack, with the exception of Assassin and Arcanist rolls.
  • If a dragon changes jobs through a challenge, they keep the lives they have gained from their past job. Example: Warriors get 3 extra lives and keep them even if they quit and become a Librarian.
  • Except for the Assassin and Arcanist, you do not have to do dragon jobs daily. Example: You can skip using the Alchemist if you don't want to change any dragon's genes.
  • If at any point there are fewer than three dragons in your kingdom, you may purchase as many dragons as needed to round out the coliseum team.
  • If the Royal is the only dragon left in your kingdom, you may purchase two of the cheapest dragons in the Auction House to repopulate your kingdom. Because one is the loneliest number...
If any other dragon other than the Royal is the sole survivor, that dragon becomes the new Royal.
  • If any dragon makes it 5 levels above the Royal, they flip a coin. On heads, they challenge the Royal to take the throne. Roll a d4 to see what happens. All deaths here result in exaltation, regardless of extra lives.
    • 1: A draw! The challenging dragon and the Royal earn respect for one another. The challenger returns to life as a Citizen.
    • 2: The Royal dies, and the challenger is crowned the new Royal.
    • 3: The challenging dragon dies, and the old Royal continues their reign.
    • 4: Both dragons die in the scuffle. Crown a new Royal, either the Heir Apparent or by random selection if there are no Heirs.
  • If a new Royal takes the throne while there are still surviving Heirs of the previous Royal who do not have a job, roll a d4 for the Heir Apparent and flip a coin for all Junior Heirs.
    • 1 or Heads: The new Royal has decided to be a kind leader and spares the Heir's life. The Heir is now a Citizen, and at level 5 will flip a coin.
      • Heads: The former Heir rolls for a job and continues life as a Citizen.
      • Tails: The former Heir will attempt to take back the throne with the same dueling rules as above. If they roll a 1, they will return to life as a Citizen and now roll for a job.
    • 2-4 or Tails: The new Royal decides to spare themself any future concerns for their well-being and has the Heir executed on the spot.
This rule applies even when it is the Heir Apparent taking the throne.

Take all your level 4 or lower dragons and level them up one level. All daily Kingdomlocke events will be put on hold until this event is completed. If you don’t have any low-level dragons, skip this and re for a new event.

11: I quit!
Choose a dragon at random. That dragon hates their job and quits! Roll for a new career. (NB: The Royal is exempt from this.) If you have a Guidance Counselor, you have the option of trying to convince the dragon to stay in their old job. Flip a coin; on heads, the Counselor was successful, and you may reroll for a new event.

12: ooo, a coup!
Roll 3 d20s. If you roll a 4 with any of them, your kingdom has dramatically betrayed the Royal a la the Ides of March, and you must exalt them. Randomize a dragon from your kingdom to become the new Royal, and any surviving children of the new Royal will become the new Heirs. See "Rules" for how to deal with the Heirs of the previous Royal.
If the coup fails (i.e., no 4s are rolled), choose a random dragon to be the chief plotter of the coup and roll a d4. On a 4, the Royal has decided to execute the chief plotter for treason. Exalt that dragon, regardless of extra lives.

13: pistols at dawn
Choose two dragons at random, excluding the Royal. These dragons now fight! Roll a d4 for the results.
  • 1: The two dragons kill each other. Exalt both, or each loses a life.
  • 2: The first dragon kills the second. Exalt the second, or lose a life.
  • 3: The second dragon kills the first. Exalt the first, or lose a life.
  • 4: The dragons kill a random dragon in the crossfire! Randomize a dragon (including hatchlings) and exalt or lose a life. Now flip a coin.
    • Heads: The death or injury of another dragon causes them to stop fighting.
    • Tails: The two dragons continue fighting. Reroll the d4 and follow the results.
If both dragons are still standing after the roll, flip a coin. They will keep rolling to duel until they flip for heads, or until one or both dragons are exalted.

14: emperor stampede
Your kingdom is rampaged by a giant emperor dragon! Roll a d10 for every dragon in your kingdom, including hatchlings. On a 4, the dragon was killed in the carnage. Exalt, or lose a life.

15: royal illness
The Royal has taken ill. Roll a d4 for an event.
  • 1: The Royal succumbs to horrible sickness. Exalt, or lose a life. If exalted, the Heir Apparent takes the throne. If there are no Heirs, choose a random dragon to become the new Royal.
  • 2: The Royal is inflicted with madness! Choose a random dragon (including hatchlings) and flip a coin.
    • Heads: The Royal executes the dragon. Exalt, regardless of extra lives.
    • Tails: The Royal snaps out of their madness at the last second. The dragon is spared.
Flip another coin to see if the Royal is cured of their madness.
    • Heads: The Royal targets another dragon. Choose another random dragon and repeat above.
    • Tails: The bloodshed was enough to snap the Royal out of their madness.
  • 3: The Royal is poisoned! Randomize a dragon for the one who poisoned the Royal. Flip a coin.
    • Heads: The Royal survives.
    • Tails: The Royal is killed. The Heir Apparent (or a random dragon if there are no Heirs) will take the throne.
Flip an additional coin for the fate of the Poisoner.
    • Heads: The Poisoner is discovered and executed. Exalt, regardless of extra lives.
    • Tails: The Poisoner escapes undetected.
  • 4: The Royal's "illness" is that they are sick of being the Royal. Flip a coin.
    • Heads: The Royal abdicates the throne to the Heir Apparent (or to a random dragon if there are no Heirs) and becomes a Citizen, rolling for a new career.
    • Tails: The Royal is persuaded to remain on the throne.
If there is a Healer in the kingdom, flip a coin for 1-3. On heads, the Healer heals the Royal with no further consequences.

16: sacrifice required
The Eleven are angry with your kingdom and demand a blood sacrifice. Roll a d4 for an event.
  • 1: You offer a random dragon as a sacrifice. The Eleven are pleased and take the dragon into their care. Choose a dragon at random who is not the Royal and exalt, regardless of extra lives. Choose three dragons at random; they each gain an extra life as a blessing from the Eleven.
  • 2: You offer a familiar as a sacrifice. The Eleven decide this is acceptable. A random hatchling appears as thanks. Buy the cheapest hatchling off of the auction house. They are NOT subject to the daily rolls for survival.
  • 3: You offer a drop of the Royal’s blood as a sacrifice. The Eleven are not impressed. Flip a coin.
    • Heads: The gods begrudgingly accept the paltry sacrifice.
    • Tails: The gods force you to battle under Death Streak rules.
  • 4: For whatever reason, you offer nothing. The Eleven are enraged and send a horrible onslaught of disasters. Plague, earthquakes, floods… Roll a d8 for every dragon in your kingdom, including hatchlings and the Royal. On a 4, the dragon does not survive. Exalt, or lose a life. If the Royal is exalted, the Heir Apparent (or a random dragon if no Heirs have survived) will take the throne.

17: assassins!
Pick a dragon at random. Regardless of job or level, they now have the job of an Assassin. Yes, the Royal can be discovered as an Assassin.

18: royal quest
Pick the Royal, then pick two dragons at random. Raise them a level. Roll a d10 for each. On a 4, they died in battle. Exalt, or lose a life. If the Royal is exalted, the Heir Apparent takes the throne. If there are no Heirs, choose one of the surviving dragons on the coli team to become the new Royal. (NB: during Quests, dragons are invincible and cannot die in the coliseum.)

19: giveth or taketh away
Take two random dragons into the coliseum and level them up once under quest rules. Flip a coin.
  • Heads: You find two wandering dragons on your quest. Purchase the two cheapest dragons from the auction house to join your kingdom.
  • Tails: The two dragons died in battle. Exalt, or lose a life.

20: festival!!
The kingdom celebrates something of your choosing with a festival! Roll a d4 for a blessing.
  • 1: Your dragons are filled with vigor while celebrating! 5 random dragons gain an extra life!
  • 2: Many dragons are attracted to the festival! Roll a d6 and buy that number of the cheapest dragons from the auction house for your kingdom.
  • 3: Your dragons wrestle each other in celebration! Level up all dragons lower than level 5 until they reach level 5. Dragons are invincible in Coli and cannot die/lose lives while you level. All daily Kingdomlocke events will be put on hold until this event is completed.
  • 4: The Royal is filled with pride in seeing the kingdom thrive. They gain one extra life.

Familiars = New friend!
Buy the cheapest level 1 dragon in the auction house of a specific breed. Use a random number generator (between 1-19) to determine which breed you will get.
1. Fae
2. Guardian
3. Mirror
4. Pearlcatcher
5. Ridgeback
6. Tundra
7. Spiral
8. Imperial
9. Snapper
10. Wildclaw
11. Nocturne
12. Coatl
13. Skydancer
14. Bogsneak
15. Obelisk
16. Gaoler
17. Banescale
18. Veilspun
19. Aberration
In the event of drawing an ancient breed, you may buy a second dragon of the same species for breeding purposes.

Apparel = Romance!
Choose two ready-to-breed dragons at random. (If you have a Matchmaker in your kingdom, you can choose any pair.) Put them in a nest. The hatchlings, should they survive, will join the kingdom.
If there are no ready-to-breed dragons, find some abandoned hatchlings instead! Roll a d4, and buy that many of the cheapest hatchlings in the auction house. These hatchlings will still be subject to the daily rolls for survival.

Battle items = Oh no…
Flip a coin and follow the result.
  • Heads: Beast Clan Attack. The beast clans attack your kingdom in a full onslaught!!! Roll a d12 for every dragon, including the Royal. Any dragon who rolls a 4 has died in the assault. Exalt, or lose a life. If the Royal is exalted, the Heir Apparent (or a random dragon if no Heirs survived) will take the throne.
  • Tails: DEATH STREAK!!! Randomly select three dragons. Fight in the coliseum at the highest dragon's level for 13 rounds consecutively (you cannot leave that venue), only quitting midway if a dragon faints. Exalt that dragon, or lose their extra life.
The Assassin is exempt from Death Streaks because of the coliseum ban. The Royal is not. If the Royal dies in a Death Streak, the Heir Apparent (or one of the surviving dragons on the coli team, if there are no Heirs) will take the throne.

Previous | Next ----- Ivrai's Journal Day 0 [item=unhatched ice egg] The blizzard struck me without warning in the middle of my journey. It was one of those sudden storms that the Southern Icefield is famous for, the ones where you go from clear skies to angry gray clouds in the blink of my four eyes. Back home in the Ruins, we used to call these kinds of storms "gifts from that blasted thunder god next door, why can't he just leave us alone." Well, wrong to call that place home now, after what happened there. But I digress. The storms in the Icefield are very different from the ones in the Mother of Light's territory, I soon discovered. The snow, for one thing. The ice, for another. I couldn't see past my nose to my claws, and within five minutes I couldn't feel those claws either. I probably made it a total of a quarter-hour before my wings froze up, though it felt like several hours with those cutting winter winds buffeting me about like an errant snowflake. Don't ask me how any dragons can live in this kind of climate, or that any would even want to. I am very much not the latter, but what I definitely am is bad at following flight directions. I guess that Guardian back in Cloudsong must have said to take a right and not a left when I crossed the sea. I wasn't sure at the time, but given the results I can see my mistake. At any rate, let's just say that I wouldn't be alive to write this now if it weren't for the fact that when my wings froze and I tumbled to the icy landscape below, my fall was broken first by something solid and wooden (ow) and then a few seconds later by something soft and relatively warm and very noisy (less ow for me, more ow for the other dragons I had landed on). Once I had defrosted slightly, I was able to discern my surroundings and reconstruct what had happened. I had crashed into the roof of a building, which had given way and deposited me directly on top of two dragons who had been sheltering from the storm in what had once been some sort of inn, from the looks of the place. They were a Tundra and a Nocturne; the Tundra's purple fur had been the soft and warm thing that had cushioned me the most, while the Nocturne was the one kicking up a large fuss over being squished and losing their shelter from the storm that still raged outside. All the shrieking caused me to lash out on instinct at these two strangers. Between my still-frozen brain and my now-broken dominant forepaw, I wasn't very successful. "Ah, stranger," said the Tundra when I groaned. "We won't hurt you. You must be hurt from the storm. Bad storm up there. I'm Nephrite. What's your name?" "Ivrai," I said, teeth clenched through the pain. (It turns out that introducing myself was unnecessary, as Nephrite immediately forgot what my name was and from then on simply called me "friend." Her companion the Nocturne fared no better: his name was apparently Frostcoil, rather fitting for the Ice dragon that he was in all aspects, but Nephrite always referred to him as "bestie," whatever that meant. Tundras, you know how they are. At least it works for her.) "What are you two doing here?" "Sleeping," said Nephrite. "We were trying to, anyway," grumbled Frostcoil from where he had curled in on himself to nurse his squashed pride. "Until you came and broke our house." "Your house?" I blinked slowly, frost still clouding my eyes. The room we were in was poorly lit, and the hole I had made let in more snow than light, but even in shadows I could tell it was a large foyer that could easily fit several Imperials all at once. These two dragons were barely out of their hatchling stage, and I had yet to see any other signs of life in this place. It seemed odd for them to be here all alone and without their parents at their age and in this weather. "You live here?" "We do now!" Nephrite chirped, sounding very proud of herself. "I found this place! Finders, keepers!" "I found it too," Frostcoil pointed out. "Yes, bestie, I know. That's why I told you this place is ours now." Over the next several days as I let my leg heal, I slowly extracted the story out of them. They were both orphans, their eggs somehow lost on the rocky slopes of the Cloudscape Crags, and had hatched side by side. They knew neither of their parents, nor did they know if they had any surviving families. They simply played together, ate together, and grew together in this frostbitten region. When they finally were big enough, they flew up the side of the nearest mountain to challenge the other's strength and came upon a village nestled in the Crags that was seemingly deserted; the empty inn we were staying in was the central building of the town, both the largest and best built. The storm had rolled in soon after they arrived, forcing them to take cover, and I was dumped on their heads shortly after that. This village, though. It fascinates me. Up until today I have only been able to explore the room I landed in (today was the first day that my paw was healed enough to attempt writing, please forgive my shaky attempts at good penmanship); but from what I could see out the window of the inn once the snow stopped, it was obvious that the clan who had once lived here had been at least somewhat prosperous and flourishing. Nephrite says she has explored as far as the outer walls that protected the clan from outside invaders, and while she can't remember the exact distance, since it took her an hour to go and come back on foot we estimated that the span of the city is at least several miles across. And the quality of the building we live in is nothing to sneeze at. They spared no expense in weatherizing the wood to last and insulate against whatever storm the Icefield might deliver, though I suppose it's no fault of theirs that they didn't strengthen the roof to withstand a falling dragon. But where were these dragons who had ensured that they would have such a lasting home here? We have seen no sign of war, or famine, or pestilence, or anything else that might have driven an entire clan to leave. There are no indications that they died here en masse, either; there are no piles of frozen bodies that you would expect in a mass death, and while Nephrite saw a graveyard just outside the outer walls, it was small and looked like it hadn't been disturbed recently. The food stocks in the inn's kitchen are still full to bursting, according to Frostcoil, so clearly they were expecting to last through these months of unpredictable weather in the mountains. Whatever it was that snatched up the dragons who had built this place, it was sudden and it took all of them all at once. This morning, as Nephrite was bringing me breakfast (her sensitive Tundra nose scrunching in distaste at the smell of the raw fowl I was enjoying), we heard Frostcoil yell from somewhere outside. Nephrite immediately scampered out of the room. I was feeling stronger than usual today, so I followed slowly after, gingerly testing the weight on my healing paw as I limped outside. Snow crunched beneath my claws as I crossed the courtyard outside the inn to another barn-like structure where Frostcoil and Nephrite were huddled together, eagerly peering inside the yawning doorway into the dark room inside. "The doors!" Frostcoil babbled, as excited as I'd ever seen him. "They opened by themselves! They were locked before, I swear, maybe they were under a magical time lock or maybe they were waiting to find me worthy of entry or – " "Or maybe," I said, inspecting the padlock on the door, "the lock finally gave out from the cold?" Frostcoil ignored me, as usual. He still hadn't forgiven me for my unannounced landing. Nephrite was already inside, chittering with delight at all the goods stockpiled inside. The place wasn't a barn, but a warehouse. Crates and boxes and barrels were stacked to the ceiling in a cavernous room that could have housed two Emperors standing on each other's shoulders; the interior dimensions did not even remotely match the exterior, so I could only assume the place must have been magically enlarged. There was even more food than in the inn's kitchen, and drink, and battle spoils, and trinkets and brewing materials and other stacks of odds and ends. All the detritus of a clan's long life, left behind by the owners for us to find with no other explanation. The thought set my teeth on edge, but in a good way. I never could resist a good mystery. "Friend, look!" I followed Nephrite to the back of the room, where a door made of steel and iron loomed over the small Tundra. She tried the handle and frowned. "It's locked." I examined the handle. It wasn't obvious, but there was a small hole beneath the knob. "Needs a key," I mused. "Must be the vault of this place. I wonder if they left the key..." Nephrite stared at me. "Who? We're the only ones here." Ah. I had never really discussed my theories on the previous owners of this place with the others. Before I could explain, Frostcoil came flying over to us with something fluffy in his claws that he promptly dropped on top of Nephrite's head. It was a cape, long and red and furry, trimmed with gold and a blue-green feathered collar. "You won't believe what I found!" Frostcoil said. "There was this, and underneath it was a box, and when I opened the box there was treasure! So much treasure! And enough gems to last us a lifetime!" Nephrite poked her head out of the cape. It was over-large for her frame, but the colors were striking against her purple fur. She wrinkled her nose and sneezed. "Smells rich," she sniffled. "That's because we are." Frostcoil grinned. "You're Queen of the Mountain now, Neph! All hail the Queen!" I can still hear those two chattering away outside this late in the evening, plotting and planning and dreaming of what they will do with this newfound wealth. Frostcoil wants to start their own clan here, a "kingdom" is what he called it, with Nephrite at the head since she hatched a minute before him. Nephrite isn't averse to the idea, though I think she is more attached to the fluffiness of her new cape. And me? I can hardly see either of these two almost-hatchlings as leaders, much less as self-made royalty. But the thought is amusing, at any rate, and if this venture is to succeed Nephrite and Frostcoil are going to need all the worldly experience that they can get. The storm cleared days ago, and soon I should be strong enough to fly off this mountain if the weather holds. But I'm starting to find that I don't want to fly away and leave these two behind. Curiosity? Attachment? Maybe it's a combination of the two. (In all honesty, the food stocks might play a bigger part in my decision than I'd like to admit.) Whatever the reason, I don't think I can leave until I see how it all ends. Or, you know, until something happens to me. I'm hoping it's the former, but you never know. And so I will keep this log. A record for myself of how things turn out that hopefully I will be around to laugh about later, and at the very least something lasting for future generations should we end up like the previous clan who lived here. Thank goodness I found heaps of parchment in the storage room; I don't think I will run out any time soon. A kingdom... ha! Well, in that case, long live Queen Nephrite. Long may she reign. May it be for much longer than her own memory span. – I. Ivrai's Journal
Day 0

Unhatched Ice Egg

The blizzard struck me without warning in the middle of my journey. It was one of those sudden storms that the Southern Icefield is famous for, the ones where you go from clear skies to angry gray clouds in the blink of my four eyes. Back home in the Ruins, we used to call these kinds of storms "gifts from that blasted thunder god next door, why can't he just leave us alone."

Well, wrong to call that place home now, after what happened there.

What's your name?"

"Ivrai," I said, teeth clenched through the pain. (It turns out that introducing myself was unnecessary, as Nephrite immediately forgot what my name was and from then on simply called me "friend." Their play fighting was more play than fight; neither had been properly trained, and their forms were sloppy at best. I winced when Frostcoil tried to land a hit on Nephrite and missed by a foot. Nephrite just giggled and threw a snowball back, which also missed and came close to hitting me instead. "Sorry, friend!" she called, but I waved it off and turned my attention back to my bone. I was always more of a reader than a fighter myself, but you don't grow up in the Ruins surrounded by Emperors without knowing something about battle readiness. These two were not ready for anything above the difficulty of a mouse. Or maybe not even that, if Nephrite's sudden shrieks were anything to go by. I dropped my bone and ran over to them, and found them facing off against a little brown creature no longer than my paw. Well, Nephrite was facing it, frozen in place with fright as she was; Frostcoil had done the sensible thing and had taken flight at the first sign of danger, so the pocketmouse squeaked and ran at poor Nephy instead. I darted in front of her, and with a slash of my claws it was over. I scooped up the dead mouse to save for a snack later, then turned to the weeping Tundra behind me. "Bad thing! Bad!" she sobbed. "Scared me awful! Is it gone yet?" "Oh, yes," I lied, quickly dropping the mouse and kicking some snow over it while Nephrite dried her eyes with a corner of her cape. "Totally gone now. It won't bother you again, I promise." Nephrite sniffled a little. "You're good at this." I swallowed a sudden lump in my throat and tried not to preen like a Pearlcatcher. "I want to be good at this, too." "Well, I – I can try, yes." I caught sight of Frostcoil hovering nearby and called, "You too, Frost! Get over here, I have something to show you!" Teaching Frostcoil was probably a mistake. He turned out to be naturally strong, and his hits pack a solid punch. He is also better at aiming than I gave him credit for, because all of his hits on me landed just fine. Nephrite was a sweetheart as always; not only did she apologize every time her blows landed, she insisted on giving me some health potions she found in the storeroom and made sure that I drank them all. She had to chase after Frostcoil to make him drink his, and from halfway down the mountain you could probably hear him yelling about how bad the potions taste. But at least both of them can handle threats just a little bit better now, and teaching them got the dust off my own rusty fighting skills. Useful all around. Ah, I'm sore all over, and it's already almost nightfall. Won't do much else today but sleep this off. From the sound of it, Nephy and Frostcoil are doing the same. – I.
