While she was a veteran of the Mistal Meals event for several years now, this was the first time that she'd ever been in direct competition with any of her competitors before. Should she go talk to them? Maybe introduce herself? What if they didn't want to interact with her? ...No, it would be better for Snickerdoodle to focus on her dish first before her nerves took over, since they only had a limited about of time to cook. Taking a deep breath, Snickerdoodle studied today's ingredients carefully. She knew they only needed to use 3 out of the 4 ingredients for each challenge, but she liked having all food types represented in her dishes so that everyone would have something they could enjoy. Snickerdoodle took a moment to appreciate the artistry of today's theme. She had to admit, the green was very pretty - the hosts had a nice idea for color. Though she shouldn't really be surprised, since Wind was a flight of artists, after all... Suddenly, Snickerdoodle got a brilliant idea. She had to leave the Mistral Meals tent to get the supplies she needed, but thankfully they were easy to find quickly. She set her items - a spool of light green ribbon, yellow construction paper, a green marker, glue, and a pair of scissors - off to the side and away from the food preparation area for now. Those would be for later. The Tundra turned her attention back to the ingredients. First, she plucked the petals off of the Fragrant Orchids, careful to not tear any of the petals. Then she lightly steamed the petals to soften them and remove their pungent odor. While those cooked, she prepared a light glaze made from lemon juice, melted butter, and a bit of salt and black pepper for flavor. Then she chopped the Glass Voles and Coral Dweller into thin strips of meat/fish about 4 inches long. As for the Leaf Insects, Snickerdoodle separated the legs from the insects' bodies, careful not to damage any. She also took some cucumbers and chopped those into thin strips as well. The petals were done steaming by this point, so Snickerdoodle placed them on a large plate for later. Then she brushed the glaze over the strips of vole, Coral Dweller, Leaf Insect, and cucumber before placing them onto a grill. She continuously brushed more glaze onto the strips as she grilled them, ensuring that they would be nice and flavorful. Once they were cooked to her satisfaction, Snickerdoodle placed the grilled strips onto the steamed orchid petals, so that one petal held only meat, one petal held only seafood, etc. Finally came the part that Snickerdoodle had grabbed the art supplies for. She cut off several short pieces of ribbon off the spool using the scissors, and then cut out small circles from the construction paper. (Well, circle-like shapes. She was a chef, not a craftsdragon.) Then she drew the Wind flight's symbol on each of the paper circles using the green marker. With that done, she wrapped each of the orchid petals around the grilled strips and tied them in place with a ribbon. Then she glued a paper circle on top of the knot with the Wind symbol facing up. The final product had a strong resemblance to the Messengers Scrolls used as festival currency for the Mistral Jamboree, or so Snickerdoodle thought with pride. It wasn't often that she got fancy with her dishes like this, but the idea was too good to pass up. Maybe it was something in the air? With a flourish, Snickerdoodle presented a giant plate filled with her creations. "Grilled Messenger Scroll Wraps!" she declared with a large grin on her face. "I made several of each food type, so everyone can enjoy one!" [item=messengers scroll] Daily Challenge Snickerdoodle's opponents looked like they were still busy with their dish, so Snickerdoodle decided to go grab a snack for herself. She found herself drawn to a bakery-like booth just outside the Mistral Meals tent, run by a Coatl Snickerdoodle recognized as one of the judges from previous years (Meringue, if she recalled correctly) and a Coatl she'd never seen before named Duskie. Not only did their booth hold all sorts of delicious-smelling baked goods, but they were also letting dragons decorate what they picked out! That was too much for Snickerdoodle and her undeniable sweet tooth to resist. She purchased a vanilla cupcake and made a beeline for the decorating zone, where she immediately decorated her cupcake with a mountain of chocolate frosting, several scoops of multicolored sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry to top it all off. Snickerdoodle dug into her sugar-overloaded confection with gusto. "This ish sho good!" she exclaimed from a mouthful of cupcake. Within a few minutes the cupcake was completely gone, except for a few streaks of frosting that the Tundra was licking off her lips. "Do you have any more?" ...Snickerdoodle's opponents would be long done with their dish by the time she returned from the bakery booth. But it was totally worth it.

She decided to go with a blackened glass vole (courtesy of Molten Scar techniques) which she cured previously, then crusted with crumbled toasted leaf insects before using fire to blacken it. She then sliced the vole into strips and placed them on some fine looking bamboo leaves as a kind of salad. For the dressing, she used the fragrant orchid petals along with some lemon and a touch of spices (she didn't want to overwhelm the orchid) and oil. This was a dish best served cold and she made a bamboo mat to serve this salad on. DAILY: SUNDAY Citra loves to create light and airy desserts as a Wind drgaon, her favorite is probably when she makes a vanilla bean sponge cake with wild berry meringue that she harvests from different areas of Sorneith. It's fun for her because the meringue always tastes different depending on what berries she gathers! She's a little chaotic in the kitchen, but makes sure to impress with the presentation and taste!

He had been a little disappointed by his clanmates disinterest in travelling to wind territory this year. His mate was busy with spring hatchlings, and with new Aberration members of the clan, they were twice the handful. Still, he had thought one of his friends would come, not... the weird guy that lived on the edge of their territory, and a stranger who had pretty much invited herself along. But it didn't matter, because this was what Kada was here for. Okay, all green ingredients... before he had a chance to think, Wyatt was already running around and chattering to his team. "This is great, I know exactly what to build. I just need some copper wiring, a few washers... hey, are you using this?" Wyatt didn't wait for an answer before he immediately started dis-assembling a contestant's oven. Kada didn't have time to try to wrangle his teammates. They were going to be unleashed on the festival, and if they got thrown out Kada would pretend he didn't know them. As he walked to the pantry to grab more ingredients, he peeked inside the competitor's baskets, noticing that most of them had avoided the Fragrant Orchid. Kada was intrigued by it, it reminded him of the wasteland and honestly, this wouldn't be the first time he had to work with weird ingredients. "Okay, I want to make something that would work as a potluck or party food, that serves a lot of people. Something festive and colorful, but not too filling," Kada said out loud. "I'm thinking a salad, but that's not really cooking... I mean, I don't know if a salad is going to wow the judges." He looked around, but neither of his travelling companions were anywhere to be seen. Okay... well, he could do this by himself. He would make the salad and a variety of dressings and hope for the best. First he prepared the vole, cracking it open like a lobster. the outside was the crunchy part, which would make for a good topping. It needed to be cooked over low heat, too high would melt it, ruining the color and texture. Best to set it in a slowcooker with some herbs for now. The fragrant orchid could present a problem to more picky eaters, but if he picked just the petals off and cooked it with some withered rose and greenpods, they would become more mild and offset the smell. Hopefully. He threw them in the pot as well, then set to work on prepping the salad. First he needed the base, some amaranth, spinach, and water lettuce. Then he added the more fun ingredients, white cabbage butterfly wings, some mushrooms, and of course the leaf insects. Then when the vole was ready he'd toss it in amaranth seeds and use that as a topping. The dressing was when he had a real chance to wow the judges, and he needed to go above and beyond to make it worth a win. It needed intense flavor, and a lot of color, since he had made a very green and flat looking salad. What to do... Suddenly, inspiration struck. It was... a LOT of work. Maybe too much for the time limit, but if he could pull it off... Kada had to try. He could make a regular roux and then just add different ingredients. It could work. A dressing for each flight! Running at speeds that even Wyatt would be impressed by, Kada ransacked the pantry for anything he could get his paws on. He wanted to make something he could be proud of if this was his only entry, and he would do it! He peeled insects, chopped plants, and deboned meat with reckless abandon. Several dragons eyed his work station warily, as used dishes piled up into stacks that threatened to tumble. He was running out of time. The plague dressing was perfect, zesty and a little prickly against the tongue. The arcane dressing was glowy and pretty, but a little bland. But there was no time to adjust, he needed to get everything plated and looking nice... if only his teammates could help! He managed to find Wyatt, who had constructed an impressive if confusing metal box that took up half of the counter. "Wyatt, can you help me please? I'm running out of time, I don't know if I'll be able to make all these." "I am helping." He pointed to the machine, then at the 5 different pots that were boiling on the stove. "This will dispense the sauces! Think of how much more impressed the judges will be. Not only did you create this dish, you also created the plating and presentation. Well, we did. No need to thank me." Kada looked apprehensively. "Okay, so... I just pour them in here?" "Aren't we almost out of time?" Oh no! Kada was so thrown off by his teammate, he forgot about the timer. He didn't have time for every element, but it would have to do. He collected his salad dressings and tossed them into the machine, having no choice but to trust his teammate. It was only after sealing the heavy metal hatch on the top that Kada realized there weren't any buttons. "How do you pick which dressing you want?" "What? Oh, there's this lever here." Wyatt tugged on it, demonstrating. A gush of purple sprayed out, covering both dragons. "I guess I should have put a bowl there." "We're going to lose,' Kada said, before spying one of the judges headed their way. He replaced his expression with a forced smile, and arranged some salad bowls by the machine to be tested out. Since the lever seemed to be random, he just hoped whatever came out of the machine tasted good. Here goes nothing! She had only to beat this entrant to move on, but they only had to beat HER to move on… Aghh, the stress! She hadn’t thought through what competing in this event was really going to mean. They hadn’t had their stingers removed, but at least the thing was already dead and wouldn’t be actively attacking; she’d just have to handle it carefully. She pulled on protective gloves as she trimmed off the tougher bits and carefully split it into two meaty slabs, like platters. She minced together some green herbs and garlic with a little oil and salt and spread it over the cut sides to season the flesh. Those Fragrant Orchids, though, smelled rather vile, even to her! Was this some kind of trick? She took a moment to rummage through the pantry stores on hand. There! Some Sweet Grass and Potato Onions should moderate the stink if she cooked them all together. She roughly chopped everything into small pieces, so it would cook more quickly, and tossed it into a pot of water she’d set to boiling, adding some Crisp-leaf Amaranth towards the end of the cooking period. When the vegetables were tender, she drained the water off and proceeded to mash it into a paste. She spread a thick layer over the herbed Coral Dweller halves. Next she tossed the Leaf Insects in a little oil and sprinkled them evenly across the top. Finally, she cleaned and crushed some Glass Voles and distributed the crumbles over that. Done! Or… not. She felt something was missing. She realized she hadn’t seen any cheese in the pantry area. That was it! Fortunately, she’d brought a generous quantity for her personal consumption. She didn’t recall seeing any rule against adding other ingredients, so she picked out a generous chunk of sage derby, which was uncommonly popular this time of year, for some reason she couldn’t fathom. She managed to shred it on a grater without including her knuckles and added a final layer to her prior creation. A few minutes in one of the ovens had it bubbling and melted. NOW her Pale Green Party Pie was ready for judging! And, she hoped, eating …

For those familiar with the famous (infamous?) 1st Anniversary Seafood Cake, you are already aware it started a trend with bakers to push the limits and create cakes designed for picky eaters. Cakepops are the next wave of that trend. The seafood version has an interior of Ballroom Urchin, which holds its shape nicely. And, for a unique twist, Bluewave jellyfish is used to create a gelatin coating instead instead of the traditional outer coating. Of course, it's still on a stick. Yum! If you are a Coatl, that is!

She had been here two years before, also participating in Mistral Meals with her friend Anaconda. They weren't the most skilled cooks, but they did prepare a lot of the meals for their Clan together- when Delta wasn't off running around the rest of Sornieth, that is. She looked over at the ingredient tray that they had been presented with. The only ingredient she was really familiar with on it was the Coral Dweller, so they were definitely using that the most. She had had to cook up a ray many times back at home and although they were a bit tough, they could carry a lot of flavor. Anaconda popped over to Delta's side. "I think we should grill these. To make up for the spongy-ness, you know?" Delta nodded. "That's a great idea! I'll start on that and you see what you can make of the other ingredients." She opened up one of the drawers and brought out a cutting board and knife, sliding them over to the Coral Dweller and then slicing it up into cubes. Anaconda, meanwhile, was trying to figure out where to go with their main meal now. She rested her chin on her claws, thinking over all the possibilities. "Since the Coral Dweller takes seasoning so well, why don't we try for a sort of grilled-and-seasoned take for this?" she mused. "The Glass Vole can be good to add some crunch. Oh, and the Leaf Insects!" Delta looked up from what she was doing, smiling at her friend. "And the Fragrant Orchids can be a garnish," she added. Now, at least they knew what they were doing! Delta moved her cubes to the grill, splashing some oil onto it and placing them down. She went to another cabinet and got out some spices, sprinkling them over while they were cooking. The edges eventually turned crispy brown and Delta plucked them up with some tongs, transferring them to another plate. She started on the Fragrant Orchids, tearing them into smaller pieces and placing them on a tray to season and pop into the oven. Anaconda was slicing up the Glass Vole, and had also moved them to a plate and then to the same grill that Delta was done using. The two of them worked as a well-oiled-machine, passing each other ingredients when they needed it while watching their food. They chatted happily about the Mistral Jamboree as they cooked and finally all of their ingredients were ready to assemble into one dish. Delta had also cooked the Leaf Insects after the Fragrant Orchids and was now delicately placing them onto a platter on top of the Coral Dweller and Glass Vole. Anaconda grabbed a jar of sauce that they had mixed up and drizzled it over the food while Delta sprinkled some final spices over their meal. The two of them admired their work and pushed the plate to the front of their counter. Now, all that was left was to cross their fingers and hope they made it through the round!

DAY 1

Daily Prompt: Confectionery Master or Disaster?

Lorelei sat beside her clanmates listening to Compote highlight the competition details, rules, and other boring things. It was all the same as before, well mostly. It was interesting that this time they would be directly facing their opponents. It looked like their first opponent was a rose colored Banescale. The little Pearlcatcher admired the how matchy the dragon's colors were and how springy.

It didn't take Rokoshi long to come up with a plan for the required items in today's cooking challenge. They were going to use the leaf insect, glass vole, and coral dweller with a surf and turf dish which meant there was gonna be 5 million steps involved. Why couldn't they just do something simple for once? The speckled Pearlcatcher released a really long sigh and slowly shuffled toward their station to further discuss the plans.

Lorelei could feel the midnight male's disapproving stare but decided to ignore it. She made her paper Coatl flick it's tongue at him instead which seemed to stir him up even more although he said nothing aside from clearing his throat louder. She needed to get the fancy tempura batter making stuff for the coral dweller and mixed vegetables and fruit for the salad. As Lorelei strolled through the endless supply tents the alluring smell of sweet breads and other confections caught her interest. The caribbean speckled dragonelle set her basket of ingredients down and wandered toward the tantalizing smell.

A white Coatl was bustling around the bakery tent, stocking items while the dust Coatl was checking patrons out. Lorelei stopped at the booth and choose a cupcake.... along with a few other flavors of icing later. At least all the flavor worked together but this was certainly a monstrous portion of frosting for 1 little cupcakes. And of course there were sprinkles. Lots of sprinkles. And Lorelei carried it back balanced on her nose. She couldn't wait until she showed the family her towering creation.

Neither of her beaux was an excitable sort, but her joy was contagious and they were all smiling. “Oooh, look! Look! There’s a bakery! Lifeanth and Obiewonth both chose vanilla, and Noberonth chose chocolate. “Ooh, pink icing! Noberonth chose cream cheese frosting with a sprinkle of nuts and a plump red cherry on top. Lifeanth returned with a veritable bouquet on her cupcake and exclaimed over their creations. “And now, we feast!” she laughed as they touched their cupcakes together as if in a toast, creating a bit of a mess before they even began to eat them.
