Sage and Burns paced anxiously around each other, waiting for any sort of news. Alps had gone to keep watch for Adriel's return, and everyone else was huddled close to their friends and families, to scared to let go.
It seemed like forever before there was any new movement, but eventually Adriel dashed towards the guardian, followed by a running Alps.
"Pierre is dead," Adriel confirmed. "I saw it happen, I got there too late to stop it."
Sage immediately felt as if she had been shot through the heart. A wave of failure threatened to wash over her, failure for protecting her own, but she couldn't let it. Not when other dragons needed her. She was their leader.
"Keening?" Burns asked.
Adriel simply nodded. "Not going to lie, the way he hunts is like art, he is incredibly skilled."
Alps shot her a look of shock.
"Sorry, we're grieving." Adriel nodded back to her partner. "But, I do have good news! I watched the rest of his hunt, and I watched him successfully hunt down and kill Hellebore. I think he must have some sort of toxins in his veins already because her attacks did nothing." A flash of admiration crossed Adriel's eyes. "Anyways, it was a very entertaining fight, but he won! He should be on his way back very soon! I imagine he wanted to gather his... payment... first."
"Wait, you're one hundred percent certain? Hellebore's dead?" Sage asked, hardly daring to let herself believe it.
"Dead as a doornail," Adriel confirmed, a wide grin across her face. "That's one more win for us, one less win for Marmara!"
"But the war is not over," Alps reminded everyone. "She'll have more resources to throw at us."
"Lighten up!" Burns nudged Alps. "I know we can't lose sight of all we have to do. But tonight? We should celebrate!"
Adriel's eyes lit up. "Oh, I have the perfect stuff for a party! And I'll let Malcolm and Flint know, they sure know how to have a good time!"
Sage felt as though she was split down the middle. Part of her was ecstatic at the victory, and was incredibly ready to just let loose and forget her anxieties, let herself live in this win for once. The other part of her felt deeply for the loss of Pierre's life, and the pain Tyrian and Canela would no doubt experience upon receiving their daughter's skull.
She did her part to help the clan prepare, but her mind was elsewhere. Until, at last, Keening returned.
The mirror was carrying two skulls with him. One horned skull of a banescale, and one tiny fae skull. He immediately walked over to Canela and Tyrian to deliver it.
"Job's done," Keening nodded. "I've collected payment, here is what you asked for."
Canela took it carefully, cradling it between her arms. Tyrian wrapped around her, tears threatening to flood her pink eyes.
"Thank you," Canela said quietly.
Normally, Sage would have invited him to stay and celebrate, but she knew the clan would be put on edge to have Pierre's killer hanging around for much longer. Keening did not complain. The mirror packed up his stuff, and wandered off into the woods.
As he disappeared, Malcolm's voice boomed from the tavern above, filling the clearing.
"WHO'S READY TO PARTY???"

Coli today was Sage, Burns and Clove! Sage is now level 10, Burns and Clove are now level 9!!! Everyone is getting so strong!!!
