Fenrir hoped that the missing god would not impact the ability to restore his shrine, especially if it seemed the deities restored them themselves when they found a worthy champion in their midst. Perhaps soon Fenrir should put out an ad for blacksmiths, if his theory was right and the Flamecaller would be the one to return next. But such experiments could wait. There were bigger things to worry about. Months had passed since his siblings' eggs had been stolen, long enough that if they had indeed made it to their hatch date, they would be fully grown by now. Iris's children were the perfect model of that, all of them had grown up well. Not that the clan had stopped looking. It seemed the plague 'aberration' Niclas had been talking about continuously moved camps. Though whether this was out of necessity from being aware of the search parties continuously being sent out, or a innate need to be nomadic, like mirrors, he did now know. The scouts had frequently returned with news of traces of a plague camp, including diseased plant life and bones leftover from meals, so they were clearly in the area. They just were good at staying out of sight. Of course, that was not all that kept Fenrir busy. He and Crevasse had grown to be more than friends, and just as they were figuring out their relationship, the increased flow of water elemental magic brought and egg to the shrine. The two of them now had a bouncing baby girl, Umberlee. Crevasse said, walking up to his boyfriend. Next to him, a smaller mirror bounded along, eyes a brilliant blue and scales are dark the the abyss itself. "Umberlee just woke up from her nap and was wondering if Cavador was coming over to play at all today." "Bonefury and Balance are dropping by with him later, although we may need to put the playdates on hold until later, or monitor them with extreme caution," Fenrir said sadly. "I don't want to have to keep them from each other, but Balance came to me earlier. It seems she is concerned that she has passed the Shade onto him. She and Bonefury have both observed strange wisps around him, and apparently Bonefury watched him do some bizarre things to a mouse that I won't go into the details of in front of 'Lee. They'll be by any minute." Just as soon as the words had left his mouth, he caught sight of the family making their way towards the shrine. Cavador yelled in excitement as he saw his friend, rushing towards her to give her a big hug. The mirror hatchling to the edge of the ledge, clearly wanting to fly to meet her friend. However, as a more land-bound breed, she had not picked up the skill of flying as fast as her friend had, especially considering she seemed to prefer playing in the water than the air. Fenrir rushed to catch her before she tumbled out, but Crevasse beat her to it. "We're going to have to practice more before you can fly without me or Papa," Crevasse lightly reminded her, setting her back down. Before she could respond, the small spiral barrelled into her, knocking her over. Umberlee squealed in excitement, and began wrestling playfully with him, each trying to get the upper hand. Please be gentle with me, I get stressed and anxious easily, and don't always pick up on meanings or social cues. I'm very detail-oriented & like to have all information possible before proceeding.
Woof, the Tidelord's disappearance! I winced a bit when I saw that it would take him more years to return. I was hoping to incorporate his comeback into some lore of mine. Ah, well~ At least there's some happier stuff to read about here. Congrats on the new babies! [emoji=guardian laughing] Umberlee is really cute (lovely name, too!), and oops, it looks like Cavador might be a real handful once he's grown. For anyone thinking about adopting Iris' kid, I humbly offer some scries. xD

Awesome!!! Sending her over now!!!

@Disillusionist

Yeah, I'm very excited for adventure/campaign mode when they build it though!!! And I think I'm used to the Tidelord's disappearance because when I was in wind we were concerned that the Windsinger had gotten himself lost in the wyrmwound because the last we heard of him was him saying he was gonna go visit. Then we didn't hear from him for years until BotE.

Thank you!!! I'm very excited for both of them! The gene plans I have for Umberlee really make her look like she is underwater...

After all, who knew how march harm the aberration meant if all three children were still alive and well? Sage and Burns went, as the parents, and Adriel had been invited along for an extra layer of back-up if things turned south. "I can't believe we're actually going to be meeting them," Sage said, moving as fast as her legs could carry her. "I mean, I always had hope, but still, underneath it all, there was a part of me that assumed-" "Just don't get your hopes up too much," Burns warned. "We don't know if they'll want to see us. They may not even know they have other parents out there. If this is with Marmara, we can't rule out brainwashing. We'll have to take things slow." "I'm done with slow!" Sage snapped. "Do you know how many years I've been waiting around on my own? I'm done with sitting still not doing anything." Then, seeing the horrified look on Burns face, she realized who she was talking to. "Sorry, I'm just stressed. I know you could be right, I just don't want you to be." "Neither do I," Burns agreed. "I hope I'm wrong." "Regardless of the situation," Adriel piped up. "There's nothing a little charisma and negotiation can't fix. And, worst comes to worst, there's always tea." "Adriel, I love you, but you are not poisoning my kids. Ever. I don't care if they want to kill me, you can never poison my children," Sage growled, turning her gaze on her friend. "But the kidnapper is fair game, yes?" Adriel asked. "Assuming he refuses to negotiate, it's always an option," Burns confirmed. The trio walked in silence for the next while, following the path the scouts had described to them. Soon, they began to see signs of plague influence. Diseased and dying plant life drooped around them, and bones were scattered on the ground. As they drew deeper, they even found little pustules growing from the ground. There was a sort of beauty in it, Sage had to admit. After all, this was what they were fighting for, weren't they? The ability for all dragons to embrace their own culture no matter where they were living? "I know what Niclas explained to us about why Marmara hired Bubo for this," Burns observed. "But I don't know how someone so repulsed by-" He didn't get the chance to finish his sentence. A large guardian was blocking their path - young, but fully grown. The pattern of her jaguar scales was familiar, and she was covered in evidence of an active gembond infection. She was undeniably one of the lost kids, though Sage was stopped by the fury on her face. Surely she could not harbour such hatred for a dragon she had never met. "Leave," The guardian said, narrowing her eyes through the lion skin she wore as a mask. "We don't take kindly to intruders here." "We just want to talk," Sage explained. "We're from a nearby clan, and we mean you no harm. We aren't here to disturb your way of life, we just want to get to know you. You see, we lost three eggs, and we have reason to believe-" "You are no mother to me, the only parent I know is my father, Bubo," the guardian spat. "Now leave, before I tear you to shreds for trespassing. We've had enough trouble from your kind." "What do you mean?" Sage felt her heart breaking. "What do you mean, my kind?" "Nature dragons," the guardian wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Every nature born dragon I've met has tried to drive me and my family out. We won't let anyone tell us how to live our lives, and no one can tell us that it is impure." "Of course, I understand," Burns nodded in respect, stepping back. "We will accept your boundaries. We apologize for intruding." "What? Just like that?" Sage asked, taken aback. Her children were alive, one of them was standing in front of her, and they were just going to leave like that? "We'll get nowhere like this," Burns warned. "I have been chased away by nature extremists enough to know why they are being cautious here. Best we can do right now is show them we respect their boundaries." "See? The bogsneak gets it. Now go." The guardian snarled. "I won't tell you again, and my claws are sharp." "I don't doubt it for a second," Adriel whistled in appreciation. "We wish you a fine afternoon." And with that, the trio left, Sage somehow finding herself even more heartbroken than she had been before. "I could look for him if you like, I'm almost done this deck and I can get around faster, tight spaces and all." "Thank you, Oregano. I would appreciate that. We don't need Claude to know his son is missing if we can help it, he has too much on his plate. Don't worry about the deck, I'll finish it while you search." Oregano nodded enthusiastically and darted out into the city below. The temperature was warm, just how he liked it. He would love to live in a place like this someday. Though not just a life among these streets. Somewhere fancy, where he had a lot of space to himself. A place he could relax and not have to worry about a thing because he'd have all the money in the world to fix whatever he wanted. That was one of the reasons he had asked for a job aboard the ship, though the sense of adventure was addicting. If he imagined hard enough, he could pretend he was hunting down a wanted criminal who had made off with his stuff, or a lost prince who needed returning, or maybe even a corrupt noble who needed punishing at the hands of someone who was already a criminal. He got so lost in his daydream, he lost track of where he was going. He wandered the streets aimlessly, dipping in and out of his imagined scenarios, each more exciting from the last. Oh, the life he would live someday! As he slipped down yet another alleyway, something jolted him out of his dreaming. A large pearl, clearly that belonging to a pearlcatcher, had rolled between some barrels. From what he knew from being on a crew with so many pearlcatchers, he knew that it was not a good sign to find a pearl without a pearlcatcher. Some poor soul much have lost it, and would be looking desperately for it. It was then he saw it. The sight almost caused him to drop the pearl again, though he was able to deftly catch it once more. At first, he couldn't believe his eyes. He had seen George fight, and talk. Of all the dragons he would have predicted being mugged and killed in an alleyway, it was not him. But yet, here was the body lying on the ground before him, eyes glassy and fixed on nothing. I laid out the chapters so that we could have the meeting with Bubo and/or the kids on the death streak day so I could have things go sour if anyone died, but then George took the hit. I had already decided the pirates were off travelling, and even if he was home, George would not be one to join the group going to meet them, so I had to add a second part. It was him (level 1), Flint (level 7) and Balance (level 5) in the death streak, and seeing as he was level 1 in the Scorched Forest, he fell almost instantly. Nothing I could have done would have saved him. Also I specifically chose the title as a reference to George's impending death... seeing as he inherited Tyrian's siren abilities. In the end, they had decided to send a small group to try to make contact with the lost children.

"I mean, I always had hope, but still, underneath it all, there was a part of me that assumed-"

"Just don't get your hopes up too much," Burns warned. "We don't know if they'll want to see us. They may not even know they have other parents out there. If this is with Marmara, we can't rule out brainwashing. We'll have to take things slow."

"I'm done with slow!" Sage snapped. "Do you know how many years I've been waiting around on my own? I'm done with sitting still not doing anything." Then, seeing the horrified look on Burns face, she realized who she was talking to. "Sorry, I'm just stressed. I know you could be right, I just don't want you to be."

"Neither do I," Burns agreed. "I hope I'm wrong."

"Regardless of the situation," Adriel piped up. "There's nothing a little charisma and negotiation can't fix. And, worst comes to worst, there's always tea."

"Adriel, I love you, but you are not poisoning my kids.

"But I don't know how someone so repulsed by-"

He didn't get the chance to finish his sentence.

"We don't take kindly to intruders here."

"We just want to talk," Sage explained. "We're from a nearby clan, and we mean you no harm. We aren't here to disturb your way of life, we just want to get to know you. You see, we lost three eggs, and we have reason to believe-"

"You are no mother to me, the only parent I know is my father, Bubo," the guardian spat. "Now leave, before I tear you to shreds for trespassing. We've had enough trouble from your kind."

"What do you mean?" Sage felt her heart breaking. "What do you mean, my kind?"

"Nature dragons," the guardian wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Every nature born dragon I've met has tried to drive me and my family out. We won't let anyone tell us how to live our lives, and no one can tell us that it is impure."

"Of course, I understand," Burns nodded in respect, stepping back. "We will accept your boundaries. We apologize for intruding."

"What? Just like that?" Sage asked, taken aback. Her children were alive, one of them was standing in front of her, and they were just going to leave like that?

"We'll get nowhere like this," Burns warned. "I have been chased away by nature extremists enough to know why they are being cautious here. Best we can do right now is show them we respect their boundaries."

"See? The bogsneak gets it. Now go." The guardian snarled. "I won't tell you again, and my claws are sharp."

"I don't doubt it for a second," Adriel whistled in appreciation. "We wish you a fine afternoon."

And with that, the trio left, Sage somehow finding herself even more heartbroken than she had been before.

"Circe, do you know when your brother will be back? We were planning on setting out at dawn, and the sun has almost risen," Finnath asked her daughter.

The pearlcatcher did not even look up as she responded. "He had important business to attend to last night," she shrugged. "He wouldn't tell me where we was going, he likes to keep his secrets. I respect that. I like to keep mine too."

Oof, death streak! Wow, this chapter started out tense...though I do love Adriel's "worst comes to worst, there's always tea." Pleasant for those who don't know her, horrifying for those who do. The meeting with Bluebell was so sad, ouch. I feel so bad for Sage. And Oregano! That was genuinely chilling, having him wander around, daydreaming...only to notice the pearl...and then... [emoji=spiral scared] That said, I'm genuinely intrigued in how George died and wonder how that will get resolved, if ever. Was it just a random mugging turned sour? Some other black market dealer looking to thin the competition? Something Circe had something to do with? Especially with that pearl, hmm...

Adriel is always such a delight to write!

Definitely a very emotional and sad chapter for many reasons! It broke my heart to write both scenes, but they also make me very excited about the direction the story is going!

And as for the mystery of George's death, all will be revealed in time... This is not a situation I plan on leaving unexplained forever.
