You can buy gems from other players in the items for sale forum. So any method you have for earning treasure can be used to get gems too c:

The quickest and best way to make gems is by selling fodder or baldwin items!

without expending any effort, you receive gems from opening chests, completing Fiona Feats (in the Trading Post), and as a well-fed bonus each day, and rarely from exalting dragons. you can also sell things on the Auction House, trade treasure for gems from other players, and offer services (art, coli, etc.) in exchange for gems! you can get the festival currency during the week the fest is happening thru a Lot of basic things on the site, and there are guides for this all over in the guide forums :]

I make a lot of treasure exalting, so I always buy in treasure and sell in gems. I sell my own bred hatchlings, all the useful coli drops I can be bothered to price from eggs and eliminates down to rename scrolls, familiars and food stacks. I can rarely be bothered to sell festival items but I sell all my extra festival currency once I have a few of the items for myself.
Also, get in the habit of familiar bonding. It pays treasure directly but the chests will sell quickly. I don't get many chests any more but you're right at the start!

Baldwin! Level him up and brew materials for higher level items, or brew genes and sell them! It takes time, but you can make a good profit

I get most of mine from selling Baldwin materials and the chests I get from familiar bonding. (only bother with selling iron/gilded chests; you're better off opening the rusted chests)

Coliseum is my go to for gems. A full food stack worth 2 points sell for around 8g-10g, 5 point stacks can go up to 20g(venues at lvl25 drop 5 points)
Coli also have hibden item drops and some expensive familiars, search them in the auction house to see their worth.
If you get any unhatched eggs easy 200g if you sell same goes for the battle stone eliminate(do not give it to crim if she asks for it)
