A common fable describes a Cerdae long ago who fled into a remote arid desert. They became hopelessly lost without any way to navigate the endless sands, and could not find fresh water. Driven to keep its host alive, the symbiotic plant began diverting nutrients away from their non-essential limbs and organs. Dehydrated and confused, the poor Cerdae could do nothing as its five senses failed one by one. Eventually, they fell into complete darkness, doomed to press on endlessly into the desert, forever seeking a way home.
Not all Cerdae come to a good end: the only goal of the plant is to keep itself and its host alive. The pact extends a dragon's endurance beyond their body's natural limits. The same power that allows a Cerdae to survive fatal diseases and wounds can also turn them into shambling half-alive horrors.
