|| BACKSTORY ||

Born small and sickly to a pair of researchers within the Sunbeam Ruins, Jericho spent much of his early life in the care of the medic and her assistant- an imperial couple named Dahlia and Orchid- instead of with his parents. Despite this, he was a naturally curious hatchling, and when he wasn't resting, he was learning all he could from the pair of dragons that raised him. Even on the harder days where he was bedridden, and his body felt too weak to move, he'd often ask about various medicinal herbs and their uses. On better days, he would shuffle around the medical tent and try to read the various books- though for a long while they were very much too technical for him to really understand. Over time, his illness got a little bit better, and eventually he was able to take a walk around the research camp, and finally see the rest of the home he was born in.

When he reached adolescence, Jericho and his caretakers- along with a few other dragons- departed from the swiftly growing clan space. When he asked why, the leader of the expedition- a no-nonsense kind of guardian that Jericho had seen in the camp a few times before- explained that the group was travelling back to Dragonhome to report their findings. "You're coming along because of your poor health," they had said, then raised their voice to address the rest of the group. "We'll be flying over the Tangled Wood, so try not to waste your energy before we take off."

Jericho felt his body tense up. He'd never flown before- his body was always too weak to do much more than walk around, much less fly. As if sensing his nerves, a skydancer walking next to him laughed. "You'll be carried. All smaller dragons are," he said, his airy voice soothing over Jericho's hesitance. "Though you'll have to suck it up if you're afraid of the height."

The flight over the Tangled Wood was all at once terrifying and exhilarating for Jericho. Orchid was tasked with carrying him, and after ensuring Jericho was secure, he'd taken off in a great burst of movement, the wind magic used to boost him- and others- up so strong that Jericho feared he'd fall off in the force of it. Once Orchid had caught the currents high in the air, the jostling came to a near stop, though Jericho was still rattled by the experience. Once he got used to the wind- and the height- Jericho found himself in awe of the world below. He'd never been so far away from the medical tent before...

When they'd landed amongst the cracked desert of Dragonhome, Orchid had joked that he thought Jericho might've torn a bald spot in his mane with how tightly he'd been holding on the whole flight. Soon enough, the group began their trek to the Colonnades of Antiquity, where their main headquarters were. Orchid and Dahlia, however, soon revealed their plans to return to the Viridian Labyrinth-and take Jericho with them. Seeing as how Jericho wasn't a true member of the research group, most members instead argued over Dahlia and Orchid's essential roles in the group. Feeling stung- but understanding- Jericho merely held off to the side, awaiting a decision.

After much squabbling, his caretakers were allowed to split off from the group, and after a small round of farewells, Jericho climbed into Orchid's back once more, and the trio made their way into the lush landscape of the Viridian Labyrinth.

It was there where Jericho learned of his caretakers' plan for him: travel through the Shrieking Wilds and have him form a pact with the Behemoth, curing him of his illness. "It will be dangerous," Dahlia had whispered to him as they slept on the outskirts of the dense jungle, Jericho's illness making a sudden and painful return and forcing the trio to stop. "It will be grueling. But we'll be here for you, just as we've always been."

Jericho awoke the next morning with a fog in his eyes, the world a blur of light and colour. He could make out the shimmering black form of Dahlia, but Orchid's dull brown form blended in with the trees, making it hard for Jericho to locate him. Upon relaying this information, a sense of urgency entered the air, and soon Jericho was ushered into the forest, Dahlia leading the way.

Jericho doesn't know what happened from there. He'd been delirious the entire trip, his memories of the event foggy and in jumbles. He does, however, know that he'd made it- blind, shivering, and most terrifying of all: alone. The pact he made did not fix his blindness, nor did it heal his wings. It did not cure his illness fully, nor did it fix him- and though at the time he believed he needed fixing, he's come to accept that he isn't broken. The pact merely gave him the strength he needed to continue on- and for that, he will be forever grateful.
