Rianna was hatched to a Pearl Cerdae and a powerful second generation pearlcatcher as product of a diplomatic union between two clans of the Lightweaver. She was raised by her cerdae parent in the gem-studded cave systems she learned to call home. When she regurgitated her seed, she began to realize that the other hatchlings she was growing up with had wings. She became madly jealous, and resentful of her parent for choosing to sacrifice their wings for connection to the Great Tree. That is when she ran away from home, wingless, and still so young.

She at first journeyed to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, hoping that living in a place where flying is not as common would ameliorate her pain. She befriended a caster of magic there who specialized in the altering of draconic bodies, a travelling mage named Awela.
