TOPIC | why AREN'T rare color combos more valued
It's certainly neat to have a first-of-its-kind or even one-of-a-kind colour combo but that's where it begins and ends for me. Just, "ah that's neat." There's so many other factors at play when it comes to a dragon's value, and those values are super duper extra subjective from player to player. And to be frank, I don't care if I hatch a nest and get the only Butt/Jank/Uggo dragon on the site, fodder is fodder [emoji=coatl tongue size=1]

There's usually a reason for 'rare' color combos. People arent breeding for them. And its likely the reason people are not breeding for those combos is because those combos are difficult to make look nice.

I'd imagine that affects this a lot, because what's a bragging right that you can't really prove actually worth to anyone but yourself? screenshots can be easily doctored. it's the same reason nobody really cares about the difference between a natural and vialed primal anymore. there isn't any way to prove you hatched it naturally like that and even if you could prove that it isnt really that special because you could have the exact same dragon using a vial
This is such a sad take to me. It's not about bragging rights, and why would you assume that people would fake it, to the point of faking screenshots? Also, an eye vial is wildly different than an entire color combo, which you can't just give a single item to make happen automatically! I'm sure a random scatter project would mess this up Sometimes, but for the most part it's just a special little fact about a dragon that could make it more special to some!
I'm sorry but I don't see how my take is sad at all? I'm not saying people can't enjoy this I am saying there is no monetary value for a reason

I enjoy my little collection of first-of-a-kind dragons! But I see it more like fun trivia than a reason to buy a dragon. I used to have three completely unique color combos on site, but all of them had a color twin born and are no longer unique. (Two of them I just noticed due to this topic.) I will also echo the sentiment of "some color combos are rare/not desired for a reason" - the second cerise/wisteria/algae on site has already been exalted (and I hide mine's tert with capsule lol). There is really no such thing as an unworkable combination, a combination just might be statistically less or more workable for the majority of people. Still, it might find its place in someone's lair.

However, the market just hasn't created itself, which is a bummer. For me, it's down to specific colours, and if I like all the colours included, I can make any combo work.

I feel that, I have two breeding pairs that make like really cool looking hatchlings that are usually pretty rare combos, but still beautiful and they...never sell...

I'm planning on starting a hatchery soon and maybe that will get them to some good homes rather than just posting on the subreddit every so often but it makes me sad :(

rare colour combo doesn't appeal to me at all, some are just too ugly for me and rarity doesn't fix it

Imo the fundamental difference why rare color combos aren't as valued as g1s/glitched dragons/lineage/id/etc is because their only selling point is their looks, and if the color combination doesn't appeal to someone, then... Why would they want them? (Note: glitched dragons usually have mass appeal because many people like the visual of having a glitch in their lair, even for a brief period of time)

I'm happy to rehab a g1, lineage dragon, etc, even if I think they look ugly at first since their value to me is separate from their appearance. I can slap a full coverage skin on them if I'm having too much difficulty, or scatterscroll them. You can't do that for a rare color combo, why buy a rare color combo if you're going to cover it up or scatter it?

tl;dr Lair space is limited, I'm not going to pay high prices for a dragon that doesn't fit my tastes. If I cannot change them to fit my tastes, I'm not wasting lair space on them

(This is speaking as someone who owns one of five Carrot/Antique/Heather dragons who has ever existed, and one of two Nightshade/Oliva/Orca dragons who've ever existed. I don't dislike odd or "unworkable" color combos but it's fine in my book if people want to stick to more easily accessible color combos)

Everyone before me has pretty much said all the answers I would give, so here is an example instead.

Here is the First Metals/Steel/Avacado gen 1 ever hatched with those colors, here is an older gen1 that was scattered into those same colors. When I bought the first dragon he was 1/1 or 1/3 of you count exalted dragons, he is now 1/11 or 1/3 or 1/2 depending on how it’s counted.

He is no longer unique. I own both gen1s with that exact color combination. He becomes less unique every year. So it’s a neat bit of trivia that I own the first two Metals/Steel/Avacado gen1s, but there isn’t any true value in that beyond them being matching gen1s

Reading this thread made me go through some of my own dragons and I found that this hatch from just 2 months ago is actually the only one of her colours. It certainly is a neat little thing to discover, but checking each dragon one by one was incredibly tedious, and given my playstyle of hatching G1s myself whether or not I get a unique colour combo is just a matter of chance. As someone else already mentioned there are like 5.5 million different colour combinations, I couldn't even imagine going through the trouble of figuring out which ones are still free. And since I was around at the time of the Colour Wheel Expansion I actually have quite a few dragons that are the first of their particular combination anyway, so thinking of that as something special to seek out in new dragons feels kinda strange for me. Personally I only really value the attributes of a dragon that I can see on their page, such as "that little number next to your dragon's name", their hatch day, element and immediate lineage. Things I have to check for elsewhere, like dragon search and extended lineage, I do not care about, there's plenty of difference to be had in breeds, genes, apparel and lore even if the colours are the exact same.
