Today’s species: the turquoise dwarf gecko!

The turquoise dwarf gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi) is a critically endangered species of lizard endemic to Tanzania. While females are green-brown in color, males are striking blue. This species is bold and social, communicating through head bobs, tail wags, and throat puffs. It lives in screwpine trees and feeds on insects and nectar, but its tropical forest habitat is shrinking and fragmenting due to fires, illegal logging, clearing for farmland, invasive species, and mining for precious stones like rubies, tourmaline, rhodolite, and gold on screwpine outcrops. The illegal pet trade, which is also a threat, knows this lizard as the electric blue gecko.

The Ruwenzori duiker (Cephalophus rubidus) is an endangered subspecies of duiker found only in the Ruwenzori Mountains between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has red fur with a lighter underside and darker back. At only 45 centimeters (18 inches) tall, this antelope is relatively small. It is diurnal and feeds on herbs.

Today’s species: the Pondicherry shark!

The Pondicherry shark (Carcharhinus hemiodon) is a critically endangered species of requiem shark once found widely along Indo-Pacific coasts. Now, however, it is now incredibly rare, with most specimens and sightings occurring in India. It is viviparous (gives birth to live offspring) and eats bony fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Given that this shark is actually quite harmless, it was once caught and eaten, but now is mainly threatened by intense fishing in its range.
