How does everyone get the genes for their dragons so easily??? The only ones I can ever find are in the marketplace, where they're low-key super expensive for a casual player like myself. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I thought I'd just try asking.

even with casual play you can get a few hundred thousand treasure within a couple of days and afford the common and uncommon genes easily.
Limited genes you can get from Baldwins or the Coliseum.
And it's easy enough to trade for gems in the Items for Sale forum so you can gather enough for the Gem genes in a decent amount of time as well.

To add to Lynell's response you should also check out EeveeDream's Updated Coliseum Guide. The coliseum does not reward evenly-statted dragons. At this point you're better off starting off with a new team as using a Tincture of Dissolution to reset their stats costs 30k per each and it only takes 7-8 minutes to get to L4 using more optimal stats/stones.

From there don't forget to check the Auction House to price compare. You can also find people selling on the Items for Sale forum, and if you find a dom shop (people in the flights who currently hold dominance) they will buy Treasure Marketplace genes for you at the discount price.
You can also convert treasure to gems on the forums if you're looking to buy genes from the Gem Marketplace.
Basically, always make sure you shop around. Marketplace isn't always the cheapest option for buying genes.
