Don't be afraid to assume dragons exist in lore even if you don't want/have space for them to Actually exist. Yeah, if you have a restaurant, you'll want multiple cooks and multiple servers so the group can efficiently serve customers and take time off in shifts, because that's realistic. But you can also have just one server and make references to there being multiple servers, for example, that are invisible "NPCs", whose presence is implied by the one dragon you do have that's a server. My dragons run a motel for guests and I like to think there are multiple dragons who clean up the rooms between guests even if I only have one or two dragons for the job atm.
this is a good point too! my actual dragons are canonically only a handful of the dragons who live in my clan's territory, so I don't view "gaps" as being a plot hole. for instance, I have few dragons in agriculture, only one in manufacturing, and none in healthcare. obviously there ARE dragons doing these things in the background also, I have a disproportionate amount of dragons who are business owners. for instance there's a casino owner who canonically employs a bunch of dragons, but I don't have any casino employees.

Jobs are half the fun of coming up with lore!! Especially since you can get absolutely whacky with it, I have one dragon who's a superhero and another pair that are ghost hunters, it's fun. Honestly most of the ways I come up with ideas is just to get a vibe, and then I can think to like, my clan is a city, what kinds of things do I have in my city where I live irl that I can have dragons doing in lore? Also since my lair is very science-oriented I have a lot of dragons in various stem fields.

Here are some general ideas I've pulled from my dragons!
Agriculturist
Messenger
Healer
Architect
Theater manager
Doctor
Fortune teller
Geologist
Novelist
Detective
Singer
Alchemist
Hatchery guard, hatchery attendant/daycare worker
Fisherman
Cartographer
Familiar caretaker (vet?)
Knight
Archaeologist
Astronomer
Chef
Poet
Scribe/librarian
Horticulturist/gardener
Bard
Tracker
Flight instructor
Inventor
Blacksmith
Scavenger
News anchor
Merchant
Meteorologist
Prophet
Festival coordinator
Elemental/magic scholar
Astrophysicist
Jeweler/gemologist
Cowboy

And then I've got several I want to add, I know I have to revamp my whole governmental system in my clan, it currently consists of a leader, a second, and a whole council, but I want to get more specific with it c: I also know I want to add in more scientist roles, a couple that have been rolling around in my brain have been stuff like engineer (mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, aerospace, etc), chemist, medical examiner, epidemiologist, anthropologist, nurse, physicist, various forensic roles, etc. I also know I need some more people related to the roles I already have, like I realized recently I have a whole theater with its own manager but no actors! I also wanna flesh out my merchant, give her some people to have a fun little bazaar with, and I've also got a canon news station but no one to run it beyond the one news anchor and two meteorologists. I've also got a whole archaeological site with only one person in charge, need plenty more people for that.

Finding one job and thinking about "how can I come up with roles to support this?" is a fun way of trying to flesh out what your dragons can do. It also creates an interconnected web, especially if one dragon with one job can support more than one other role in the clan. Makes for fun lore opportunities! In that same vein, basically any role can have "apprentice [role]" tacked onto it as well, you can always have dragons that are still in training. Also don't be afraid to get wild with roles too, like coming up with fun and silly things can be a good contrast to having more serious dragons as well
This is quite amazing and i'm going to root through your lair to read the lore now. Don't come looking for me...

One thing I did recently was make a registrar, where I listed out all my dragons professions and loosely catagories them. Helps me keep track bc I’m very scatterbrained, but also creating the catagories helped me think of jobs for dragons where they had a hobby or just vibes but no “role” (or pawning off guard duty to restless youngins) Idk just a thought. Plus having a record keeper is a job in itself! Two birds one stone. I know some people have “utility” dragons that hold lair info or lore stuff, so this is kinda the same thing. Their technically unemployed, but like they’re still doing something?? Not a job bc it’s just their kids not others’, but I havnt quite figured out how to word that yet. It’s a wip lol (Also I have a dragon who’s job is just Halloween decorator. Idk she supplies those giant plastic skeletons. Idk where she gets them, or what she does the other 11 months of the year…)

Absolutely bookmarking this thread because it's super helpful omg

I like basing my dragon jobs off of their relationships with other dragons! (Like having one dragon be a maid for another dragon or having a dragon open a store that sells things provided by another dragons job :3)

This thread is so helpful!

I'm trying to figure out how to balance clan roles, in particular gathering. How many dragons of other professions can one gatherer feed? There's no way one gatherer of each food type could feed my entire lair. Maybe the ratio should be like 1:10 or something.
