i feel you so much on this as a person with some pastel dragons themselves. i'm mostly put off by how 'muddy' it looks, i'm happy that people are enjoying it though!

Yes they do . I do have a abyss primary G1 coatl and he would looks stunning with starmap .

oh watermelon starmap look like half crimson mix with half coral and firefly white on top of it . Not bad but yeah it's no longer a pastel color with starmap .

I think "disastrous" and "nightmare" are a little strong, though? Maybe it doesn't make those colors look how you like them, but as a fan of pale-to-darker colors... I think it actually makes the pastel tones palatable. Not every gene has to suit every breeding pair we have currently. I really like pistachio starmap, actually.
I don't know if I'd necessarily even call the gene hit-or-miss just because it's hit-or-miss with the current pairs we have going. Because of the shift in color, I think this gene could make for some really fun XYZ dragons that look pretty matchy! The only thing I'm personally iffy about is that there doesn't seem to be a tertiary besides firefly that looks really good with it...

Yeah, I did see a few dragons with the smoke and starmap thing! It doesn't look bad or anything... I don't know, it's the straight lines/connect-the-dots thing going on for me. It's kinda weird.

I definitely see what you mean in that it looks better on dark colours as expected, but I think it's still good on light ones too! If it didn't darken them, they'd be too indistinguishable (see: Firefly) and people would complain about that instead. I'm very into pastel dergs too, but I think it's pretty as it is.
