Now, let's begin with what differentiates Official Fire Flight Subspecies from non-affiliated subspecies and what that means for owners, buyers, lore writers, and breeders. These characteristics are usually represented as a specific color combo and/or a gene combo of which are sometimes associated with a specific breed. Then, these characteristics are given specific lore to explain [i]why[/i] they look like they do. From here, people usually have official breeding registries, pairs, and hatcheries. [b]How is that different from a Flight's Official Subspecies?[/b] Official means that a user filled out an application and submitted it to be shared with other people under the name of Official. To be an "official" subspecies, the subspecies must be in some way related to Fire/Lava, the Ashfall Wastes, Fire Flight, or Flamecaller. (2) A subspecies associated with a specific flight and verified by a flight's appointed subspecies coordinator to let the breed be associated with the flight. Different flights have different requirements for a subspecies to be considered official, and some are far more strict than others. [b]Honorary[/b] - A dragon that is technically outside the Subspecies Specifications, but recognized as being part of the subspecies all the same. Typically one-off from a range, a wrong gene, or having the wrong elemental eyes. ie: Arcane-flight blue/blue/fire Tundra would be an honorary Flambebe due to it not having fire-flight alignment, although otherwise meeting requirements and thus few would contest it's inclusion in the subspecies. [b]"Subspecies Specifications"[/b] - (1) Requirements set by a subspecies creator detailing the subspecies. (2) Guidelines set by the subspecies creator for determining whether or not a dragon meets the requirements to be considered a part of the subspecies [b]Variant Subspecies/Variants[/b] - A dragon with a different set of requirements, but still related to the original in appearance or lore. Either a more specific set of requirements or a wider range, much more rarely completely different requirements entirely. Example of variants: zombebes a variant of flambebes. [i]Typically, a "V." before name of a subspecies means the dragon is a variant of another subspecies.[/i] [b]Endangered Subspecies/Extinct[/b]- Subspecies in which an owner has gone inactive and there are no other breeders available are considered endangered. Not an official recognition, usually an agreed-upon term for a subspecies. Extinct Subspecies are only really a more exaggerated version of "endangered" typically when a range is difficult to achieve and requires breeding to reintroduce back into the "wild." [b]Why does it matter if a dragon is "official" or not?[/b] A. It doesn't! Can help with advertising, and in Fire's specific case, we have a Subspecies Raffle every year during Flameforger's. Beyond community & a lil' advertising... there's really no benefit. Q. [b]Why are YOU the judge of Subspecies? Why do YOU get to decide what does and doesn't represent the entire Flight?[/b] A. I only really act as a gather-er of information and help fellow subspecies enthusiasts get recognition. I only look for what I was told to (of or relating to fire, volcanoes, Ashfall wastes, Flamecaller, etc.) so the bar isn't exactly so high it's elite. But [i]why[/i] did I? Well, no one else really wanted to, the previous lead asked I take over, and I am a subspecies enthusiast so it felt natural. Q. [b]Why make a subspecies?[/b] A. No real reason, but these are usually passion projects. Someone wanted to tell a story, someone wanted to show off a gorgeous combo, someone wanted to make a community, etc. Q. [b]Isn't it kinda elitist? Only showing dragons someone's created implying they spent thousands on genes and or even dragons?[/b] A. Crowd-funding for subspecies is totally fine, and there's many folks happy to help support more subspecies. And seeing as ANY color combo or ANY gene can technically be a subspecies, I wouldn't call it something only the richest players can participate, maybe just breeding-savvy players. Q. [b]You keep talking about community this and community that. Are subspecies community driven/decided upon or individually?[/b] A. Both! Some subspecies have dual creators, some subspecies were only developed after they gained support and popularity in the community, and some subspecies only gained popularity because they were "official" and advertised here. [b]No subspecies spawns truly out of nowhere, Flambebes are unique and expecting every subspecies to be another Flambebe is unrealistic[/b] [b]Q. Why can't I place more restrictions on my breeding, even for lore reasons? I want my subspecies to be exclusive.[/b] A. If you want exclusivity, do not submit your dragon to Fire. If someone decides they want to try and restrict dragon breeding this could only be enforced with peer pressure, blocking/banning, and potentially bullying. That kind of nonsense isn't very neighborly and the whole point here is to create a bastion of community world building. It isn't a place to try and artificially inflate hatchling prices or declare claim over some particular idea! This is a tricky question, and is usually applied on a case-by-case basis (primarily involving original creator's consent/credit!). For example, there's thousands of Obsidian/Obsidian/Orange-Range dragons on site, but this also fits Magma Dragons. Usually, one of three ideas is applied: (1) No one OWNS a color range, and no one can force you to do anything with your dragons and (2) Don't try to take the ideas and designs another user came up with and try to pretend they're completely your own ideas (3) If it's not recognized/recognizable as its own thing & can be "re-created" without knowledge of the original, it totally defeats the purpose of it being a subspecies-- which implies specification and deliberate choosing of genes/colors/breeds. [b]Q. Can I turn my personal breeding project into an official subspecies?[/b] A. Depends on what you mean. In regards to a color combo you like, there's nothing technically stopping you, but Fire Flight Subspecies imply open-source, open-breeding, lots of effort, and [i]community[/i]. If your goal is to corner the market or just make something new and special without any desire to connect with a community, you'd best just make your own and not submit here.
