Some say these reports are lost researchers who, mad with magic, wander the archives. Others say they’re rats or parasites that have infested the quieter areas. Most dismiss them as a common hallucination brought on by students with too little sleep and overactive imaginations. The books there contain an intense concentration of magic, and, when left untouched for long enough, this arcane pressure can spontaneously create a dragon. This is how the first of the Bookwyrms came into existence. The [b]first were faes[/b], due to their small size and arcane inclinations, but [b]some have formed as veilspun[/b] too. Since then, they have bred and flourished in the archives, families tucked between the pages of books or curled up in scrolls. Only recently, when their numbers have started to grow too big for their home, have they started to emerge into wider dragon society. Surrounded by books from a young age, they nurture a deep love of knowledge, and most will [b]happily spend their lives reading[/b] in the archives. The old adage 'curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back’ doesn’t quite apply to Bookwyrms; they’re never satisfied, and will always go back for more. As a result, they’re [b]often experts[/b] in whatever subject they’ve chosen to devote their time to. Often, this will be magic—their origins in the arcane tomes, and their resulting talent for the magic usually drives Bookwyrms towards that subject. However, there are Bookwyrm experts in every field, nestled in whatever library section they prefer. Lastly, this species has survived through their [b]shyness[/b]. They’re entirely nocturnal, preferring the archives’ less busy night hours. The [b]fear of being found[/b], studied, and becoming another entry in one of the many encyclopedias around them keep the Bookwyrms to the dark corners and locked rooms of the libraries. However, there is a [b]thriving tradition of leaving notes and writing letters[/b]—friendships and relationships regularly spark from a slip of paper left in a favourite book, or a snarky annotation in a contentious passage. The core tradition that unifies Bookwyrms, across clans and families, is their names. Rather than being named by their parents, Bookwyrms choose what to call themselves: when they come of age, [b]they pick the name of a literary character[/b] they admire or resonate with, and keep it for the rest of their lives.
