Introduction

Shadowbinder Onyx Idol

Deep within the gnarled undergrowth of the Foxfire Bramble lies a network of underground caverns full of trees and bioluminescent creatures. As you descend into the darkness, you feel its mysterious inhabitants turn curious gazes on you.

Welcome to The Twisted Reach.

In the Tangled Wood, one thing is universally true: If you want to survive, you cannot fear the dark. However, only one night in the Foxfire Bramble will remind you that you have much to fear in these woods. A second night and you may be lucky enough to stumble upon the hidden entrance to the Twisted Reach.

A network of caves and trees stretching deep into the underground has been claimed by a small but growing clan of various characters. Here it is wise to take your next step carefully. This underground world is an Elysium to its residents, but a purgatory for anyone who means it harm.

The Twisted Reach
The dragons who take refuge here are known as the clan of the Twisted Reach. As terrifying as the underground may seem to those unfamiliar with the dark maze of caverns, those who live here find it a comfort. They do not need to fear growing lost, as Vesper has placed a spell on each of them that allows him to locate them at any time. As long as the Shadowbinder guides them, they are safe here.
light_0.png
The Acolytes
A group of light-aligned assassins lead by a jealous pearlcatcher who claims he is the only dragon alive with a true connection to the Lightweaver. Claims the deity has given him the mission to eradicate every last imperial from Sornieth. Imperials were a mistake after all. So every last one must die, and Lux will stop at nothing to make sure his Acolytes bring that to fruition.

It isn't unthinkable for them to dedicate themselves to serving their deities. But when someone takes their devotion, twists it and contorts until it's hatred and judgment, the consequences prove to be catastrophic, both for the individual and those around them. It took a great number of years for me to learn Lux's story. No matter my proximity to him, it seemed the pearlcatcher had placed an unbreakable lock on his past. To my surprise, it was his own follower who shared with me the origin of a dragon I can only describe as pure evil. The Sunbeam Ruins shined as it always did, even on the day of Lux's birth. He lived a fairly standard life, entering an academy for young scholars. He made friends, got good marks, and worked hard to earn his place in a bustling society. Through his adolescence, Lux was... good. It couldn't last. The pearlcatcher, bewitched by the shimmering gleam of his own element and his loyalty to the Lightweaver, decided to begin studying to be an acolyte, a priest of light so divine that some believed they could speak directly to the Lightweaver herself. During these studies, however, something began to change. Lux's world view grew jaded, and through the ideals of a corrupted mentor, Lux thought himself a god among dragonkind. He found hatred instead of peace and warmth. It's not clear even to his closest friend at the time what sparked this change, disregarding the overzealous manipulation from the acolyte who trained him. Even so, that dragon had not gone as far as Lux would. When months became years, the light-born student was hardly recognizable. His heart was overflowing with hate... hate of the shadow region, hate of anyone who did not follow the Lightweaver.... and worst of all, hate of his own elder cousins... the imperials. [/columns] The Ideals of the Zealot It's hard to pinpoint what it is that a dragon like Lux is thinking. I've always found it difficult to understand where his hatred for imperials sparks. The only thing I know for sure is that he hated them. Called them lesser acolytes and disgraces to the Sunbeam Ruins and the deity that rules them. During the rise of the emperor Luminax, the Lightweaver said aloud for all of her children to hear. Imperials were a mistake. The moment he heard this, Lux knew. His loyalty to the Lightweaver had paid off, and he believed he was tasked with the divine purpose, the weighty burden, of eliminating her mistakes. Every imperial had to die. The pearlcatcher waited no longer. He disbanded from his school and his mentor and set out to enlist the help of fellow light dragons who would listen to his ideals. Lux was fully convinced he was the one dragon in all of Sornieth who had a direct connection to the Lightweaver, interpreting small signs such as shifting clouds and brightening sunlight as messages from the Lightweaver herself. Unfortunately for the fate of the imperial dragons and the world at large, Lux was very charismatic. He spread his message and manipulated the naive and the young. He located the most hateful dragons in Sornieth and directed their rage in a direction he found useful. He appealed to the selfish with bribery and promises of a world in which they would thrive. His inner circle consisted fully of light-aligned dragons, though he'd begun to expand his influence to other regions as well. He traveled to the Tangled Wood out of sheer spite for the shadow element and, there, he began his god-given mission. It was also there that he would meet Vesper. Lux

It's not unusual for a dragon to feel a strong connection to the element of their birth.

His heart was overflowing with hate... hate of the shadow region, hate of anyone who did not follow the Lightweaver.... and worst of all, hate of his own elder cousins... the imperials.

The Ideals of the Zealot

It's hard to pinpoint what it is that a dragon like Lux is thinking.

The Acolytes' Inner Circle

69783224p.png Lux was a dragon of great cruelty. But he led the inner circle with the tactics and ferocity of a dragon many times his own age. Despite his mistreatment of his followers, many of them obeyed his orders simply out of fear. He was a warrior, a scholar, and a mage beyond natural skill. He found every way to get inside the head of an individual and tear apart their very identity.
Vassal is the first imperial Lux ever faced. It was a chance encounter and the first time Lux had attacked another dragon. And just as we were clinging to one another, sure it was the end, a shape appeared between us with jet black wings large enough to block out the sun. Within a few moments of blood, snarling, and wings and talons, the roc was gone. In its place, stood Vesper. It was the first time I'd ever seen anything like him. A huge dragon with sprawling wings and empty violet eyes beneath that skull he wears. Shining, glimmering scales. They seemed to simultaneously reflect light and swallow it up. He raised his head in front of the sun so his visage was blinding. A shock of crimson blood slid down his cheek, beneath his eye. As Nox and I stood in awe of our rescuer, he looked us up and down as well. "Are you okay?" On all sides. He was surrounded. The veilspun swallowed his fear and took off at full speed into the air, wings beating madly. He heard the familiar snarling of Lux's banescale, Curo, behind him. Vesper and I were nowhere in sight, nowhere close. We'd gone off to gather food. In a desperate attempt to dodge the banescale's cruel fangs, Nox darted into the underbrush. He ran, close to the ground, nearly tripping over his own mane. Thorns and sticks tore into flesh, but it was much better than the talons of an Acolyte. Nox bolted forward into a dark patch of brambles, then suddenly, he was in freefall. He tumbled down a rocky slope into pitch blackness. When he finally landed, he squinted through the darkness to try and discern where he'd ended up. Clawing the debris from his mane, Nox wandered forward a few steps. Thanks to keen night vision, he could make out the shape of a massive cavern, stalactites, even trees, oddly enough. He waited there for a while, until he was sure the banescale was gone, before he exited the cavern and found Vesper and I. Nox took us back to the underground labyrinth and showed us what he'd found. From the large cavern expanded a series of tunnel networks that seemed endless. In fact, it took several months to even reach the end of the caverns. We spent most of our early days simply mapping it. We established a garden, tended the underground forest, and located a river for endless clean water. As we continued to explore, the caverns felt more and more like home, until finally, it was home. We brought in more dragons who needed a place to hide, and the difficulty in navigating the Reach kept us safe.

"Now this. This is a story I couldn't forget. Wouldn't want to. Many of these days contain my most joyful memories."
Year 0- The Founding

"I was alone. My true origin is irrelevant, as this is not my story, so I will start with that. My being alone. Curled up in the woods around the intertwining branches of a particularly comfortable willow tree. Before there was Vesper in my life, there was Nox. Nox and I were friends for several years before we even knew of Vesper's existence.

"Of course, I loved Nox. Very, very much. But love does not make a strong and capable dragon. We were two very small dragons in a very big world. No matter how inseparable we may have been, we knew that our diminutive statures would be the death of us... not to mention the fact that neither of us had combat experience. How close I was to being proven right... but something happened that my divination had not Seen.

The next years can be summarized as a mixture of the following in no particular order:

 • Vesper protecting Nox and I from the dark creatures of the Tangled Wood
 • the three of us searching for a home
 • Vesper telling us of the light-born coven that had recently located him; he said something of unfinished business, but didn't yet elaborate
 • the Acolytes locating and chasing us until we took shelter in a hidden cave that Nox stumbled into wholly by mistake
 • the location of the Twisted Reach... the underground cave network we would soon call home
 • my falling in love... perhaps not in the romantic sense, but knowing Vesper, I was reassured that soul mates exist

The Discovery of
The Twisted Reach

Nox turned his head up in concern at the snap of a twig behind him, then panic when he heard the brambles around him rustle with movement. On all sides.

We brought in more dragons who needed a place to hide, and the difficulty in navigating the Reach kept us safe.
