History
The clan of Pavor originated as a band of outcasts and misfits over 800 years ago, and was located on the border of the Scarred Wasteland and the Tangled Wood. It is here that the clan's belief that the territories of other elements were dangerous, as over the years there were many hatchlings that would wander into the Tangled Wood and never be seen again.
As the number of missing hatchlings only continued to rise, older generations of the clans believed that the only way to stop the hatchlings from venturing out into areas that they do not know was to strike fear into their hearts, so that they may never again dare to wander away from their clan.
However, the younger generations of the clan felt as though this solution might do more harm than good in the long-run, and suggested that perhaps instead they should relocate to another area where it would be safer for hatchlings to roam around.
The elders took their ideas into consideration, but still stood by their own solution. From there, they ended up having to make a compromise; if they were to relocate to a new area, the hatchlings would not be allowed to roam as freely as they once did. The area that they would relocate to had to be one in which there would be no way for a hatchling to wander off without other dragons noticing. Someplace with open spaces where it may be difficult to sneak, or hide, or get lost in. The second part of the compromise was that after they had found a new area to live in, every generation from that point on would be taught of the history of the clan, and how many a young dragon has gone missing in other territories. These lessons were meant to ensure that history would not repeat itself.
And so, the clan decided that the best area to live in to ensure the safety of the hatchlings was to live closer to the shore. Their reasoning was that with an open body of water, if a hatchling got too close and was in danger, the sound of the splashing would alert older dragons who could help the hatchling out before they drowned or otherwise injured themselves in the water. Otherwise, if they wanted to wander anywhere else, they would have to walk through some of the town first before they could even reach the borders of any other clans or territories.
After a long trek across the plague territory, they finally reached the edge where the land meets the water and found, much to their relief, that the area was vacant.
From there, they began construction on the small town, designing it so that the buildings were closer together and looked out toward the sea. Along with it, they built a dock for ships and other structures including the lighthouse, the orphanage, the schoolhouse, and a town hall. The entire town was completed within a matter of 20 years.
At the schoolhouse is where the hatchlings were taught the history of their clan, just as promised in the compromise.
However, what nobody knew at the time was that over the years, the lessons being taught would only continue to become more exaggerated and extreme, especially after the generations that had lived through these times had died off. With no reliable way to properly fact-check the lessons, the tales eventually began to stray far from the truth, inciting a fear within the hatchlings that only grew with time.
However, it wasn't long after this that technology began to advance, and it became easier to access reliable information; through the power of ink and paper. Over a long span of years, scribes would document the lessons that were being taught at the schoolhouse, as well as what they had been taught themselves as hatchlings. Eventually, they found that most of the lessons being taught were not only different in the structure, but also the facts and lessons within the lectures, some of which being twisted to a point where even the message of the lecture was completely different from the original, or lost in translation entirely.
This was all brought up during town hall, to which they collectively created a strategy to better ensure that the hatchlings are not being given false information, and to put more focus on the quality of their lessons.
However, at this point, the damage had already been done. Many generations had already grew up being taught things such as "you will die if you step out of your own element", and "Plague element dragons simply cannot survive outside of their own territory", and even as far as cultist beliefs such as "dragons will never be accepted outside of their own clans, which is why it's not safe to leave town."
These dragons continued to live their lives with these beliefs, as they were so heavily ingrained into their minds as hatchlings that they were never truly able to let go of what they had been taught.
However, the last of these generations are older now, and most of the younger generations hold no such beliefs. Nowadays, most dragons have a tendency to stay within their clan anyway since surrounding clans have long since relocated, meaning that it would be a long ways to travel to go somewhere else with civilization.
