But that’s not the case in this one.

Here it’s the librarian herself making a ruckus. She’s twirling from shelf to shelf, humming as she goes. Quick claws rearrange stacks of books on the upper shelves that have toppled over, her mind wandering down a thousand plotlines and a thousand more as green eyes flit over the titles of the leatherbound volumes. They’d be listing off all the reasons why what she's about to do is a bad idea, starting with she might get herself killed. The list would probably go on – but, if she’s honest, she would have tuned them out even if they were here. Sure, she very well may blow herself up, accidentally set the lab on fire, or create a mutant living sludge monster hellbent on absorbing them all into its gelatinous mass. But to her, those all sound like future Quicklead problems. Right now Quickleaf is more preoccupied with which of the unlabeled vials hanging from her bag is the right one. It’s the blue one… or… is it the other blue one? No… the green one stands out, maybe it was that one... Maybe someone else would have examined them closely, used minute reasoning and deduction to determine which of the vials contained a mixture that would be non-explosive in the presence of the other ingredients she’s already packed into the bowl. She, on the other hand, takes all three into her dexterous claws, uncaps them, and pours them in. Blue, bluer, and green liquids mix together, dissolving the other ingredients. “Hmm,” she muses, watching as the mixture begins to froth and expand, seemingly stir itself as it thickens. “Didn’t see that coming.” Maybe someone else would have lowered their goggles to protect their eyes when the mixture started emitting puffs of smoke, admitted that they’d chosen wrong, and started panicking. She, on the other hand, simply hums and, with little thought, picks up the bowls and tosses it over her shoulder. The sheer chaos that ensues has her snickering, as her clanmates shriek and stumble over each other to get away from the mutant living sludge monster that seems hellbent on absorbing them into its gelatinous mass. Last time… well, let’s not talk about last time. How can she possibly move when these adorable little creatures have chosen her to perch on? She can’t bear the thought of disrupting her tiny newfound friends as they idly chatter to each other, fluttering from one horn to another. Goodness, no, she can’t betray the trust that they’ve put in her. Even if it’s been four days. And her feet are groaning for reprieve. Last time… well, let’s not talk about last time.

How can she possibly move when these adorable little creatures have chosen her to perch on? She can’t bear the thought of disrupting her tiny newfound friends as they idly chatter to each other, fluttering from one horn to another. And her feet are groaning for reprieve.

This is fine, she thinks contently, continuing her statuesque stillness even as her tummy grumbles in protest.

“Mission Control this is Astral Vibes.”

The answering voice is hard to understand - - - broken up by wavelengths of static and distances spanning measurements of the cosmos, yet still yearning across the distance to reach her. “Come in, Astral Vibes, this is Mission Control.”

It’s a familiar voice, ringing in her ears as steadfast as the crystal that encases her, and she can’t help but feel more sure of herself as she gazes straight into the unknown, knowing that he’s somewhere far below, looking up at her. He’s somewhere down there watching her, watching the comet streak across the sky, its tail blazing with a ethereal purple glow just begging to be harnessed.

“Requesting permission to enter the plasma zone.”

Her voice is solid and steady - - - there’s not an ounce of trepidation or fear. She barely hears herself speak, her attention caught by the object racing by; breaking the stillness and boundaries of space as it flies free and untethered. It ignites the trail behind it in an aura of color that refracts like artificial neon lights from her mane - - - and she wants, more than anything, to run in its wake.

She wants to feel those colors against her hide, wants to feel how her heartbeat flies in tandem with the comet as she tries to keep pace.

Will she be able to do it?

Can she chase a comet and catch it by its tail?

Can she swim in the aura that burns behind it?

“Permission granted. See you when you pass through the sky, Astral. Safe travels.”

She’s gone before he’s finished speaking, bounding forward - - - gaining momentum, gaining speed - - - until she’s riding in the cosmic halo.
