The Sandstone Ghost

Sometimes returns are more painful than absence.

Arenite, more conflicted than ever, has retreated ahead of the Riot of Rot to more favored haunts, trying to clear his head. He doesn't know how to help Taxus, especially when he does find his brother's transformation unnerving, and he can't reconcile his perpetual differences in civility with the clan-leaders with his feelings of kinship with Keaia, who has also wandered the desert when it seemed intent on killing her.

Currently he is soaring the broad open spaces of Lightning's Highlands, Light's plains, and now and then traveling to the baked clay deserts of Earth, wondering if he might feel more at home there. He keeps in regular contact with Henhowl and with Telleren and Scorzalite in the Plague/Shadow border, though he never lingers long in the confines of the forest.

Arenite is a conflicted dragon. Light-aligned but hard-imprinted in nocturne fashion on the Shifting Expanse, he seems permanently drawn to a region hostile to him on an essential level. He yearns for connection with Cindercone Clan, yet is increasingly at odds with them over their rough-and-tumble habits and general hostility to Lightning Flight. Unusually for a nocturne, he found the Tangled Wood suffocating and unwelcome, and is heartily glad to be away from the Plague/Shadow border.

One of the miscreant "scientists" the clan keeps around, Arenite is most often seen studying the clan's more-or-less legitimately-acquired texts, helping Harvest with her lighting and communications lines, or arguing with fellow stiff-neck nocturne Aput. More often, he is absent, scouting for resources and news in the comparatively safe northern reaches of the Expanse or the broad grassy plains of Light.

Naturally sociable, but with little in common with the rest of the clan, Arenite is closest with his nest-"siblings", Taxus, Alkane, and Benzoin. Much of his distance from the clan can be traced to the Ghosts' breakup—with Benzoin having moved on, Alkane in hermitage, and Taxus finally returned but haunted, he feels adrift. He and Stormweaver work well together, but do not have much in common besides good business sense. If Ardor ever manages to calm down, they will likely be good friends, but he finds the obelisk's enthusiasm and less than keen wit wearing.

Craft
Arenite favors crafts that weld Lightning ingenuity and strong magic into useful devices. He has several devices of basic circuitry that trigger bursts of useful magic—often blasts of bright light—when exposed to the correct inputs, both for sale and

Physical description
Arenite is a small, stocky nocturne with large wings the hot blue of a desert sky. His hide has the texture of sandstone, and is scored with long, fractured scars from electrical discharge. Scrub-like spines sprout up from his back. He has a buoyant manner of flight, but moves only slowly when on the ground. He smells strongly of hot sandstone and desert scrub. Surprisingly, he is a good swimmer, utilizing his wings like a diving bird.

Combat
Arenite relies on agility and magical might to subdue opponents, flinging bursts of dazzling light with the hot intensity of a desert noon. He fights almost exclusively on the wing, and is severely hampered if forced to land, though he can fight well enough in the water if pressed. He generally fights in a team with Telleren and Scorzalite, since all three are primarily driven by desire to acquire salable resources rather than the thrill of battle. Well-used to being outmatched, Arenite will usually retreat rather than stand his ground.

Origin
Arenite was hatched in Cindercone Clan as the first Night of the Nocturne waned, alongside his fellow Ghosts. He suddenly spooked one day, convinced that Cindercone had been destroyed by a great storm, and fled into the wilds alongside his siblings. For several seasons, he dwelled in the Shifting Expanse, keeping in contact with the other Ghosts and mimicking the desert, complete with Stormcatcher's voice booming through speakers.

Kin
Arenite has no known kin, but considers his fellow Ghosts, Alkane, Benzoin, and Taxus, to be his brothers and sister.

Familiar

Arenite has taken several golems as familiars since leaving the Expanse. As he is currently living alone, he has taken this powerful creeper along with him as a defense measure—their powerful bite should serve as a physical backup to his magical might.
