They called on Ersatz because broken mirrors are bad luck, and she’s supposed to bring the good sort. That was about the extent of her qualifications for the whole situation, but she's always moved through life with the kind of easy confidence that comes with having a god as your grandpop, so she takes on the job with few questions asked. Find the creature, convince it to leave. It sounded simple enough when she put it that way in her head. The creature doesn’t try to eat her - at least, not right away. She feels it lurking at the edges of her dreams, always out of sight, almost-peripheral, nearly-there. Ersatz wasn’t worried when mirrors started featuring prominently in her dreams; the uneasiness really only starts when she wakes up one day from a dream about teeth and her reflections have followed her out of her dreams. None of them are the monster she’s supposed to get rid of - that at least is clear after a few minutes. But they all look... strange. Like warped reflections of her, through tinted funhouse glass. That one almost has her wings. That one tilts its head to the side just like she does. And that one has eyes that stare right through her soul. Ersatz’s mother did not raise her into someone who would leave children untended. But she still has a creature to hunt down, so she offers them to the caravan, in hopes someone else will take pity and teach them how to be people. |
