Biography

Seek and his three younger brothers hatched during light’s holiday when the hatchery was filled with hatchlings. The nocturne brothers though preferred to not interact with others due to their mimicking instinct; Starfall and Vash had so strong instinct that they had troubles being themselves while Seek and Rune had less trouble though at least Seek used a lot of energy to fight his nature. Despite of their shared troubles the brothers weren’t that close, except Vash and Rune, which made it quite surprising when all four of them decided to dedicate themselves to the arcane arts and moved to the Observatory.

Differences between brothers became clear after the sorting ceremony; with the exception of Vash who seemed to follow Rune like a shadow all of them ended up in different houses. Rune and Seek were both named after one of the houses, Runesworn and Starseeker respectively, but only the younger dragon ended up in the right house. Seek was sorted into Dreamstrider while Starfall was the one who got to go to the Starseeker house. Seek was a little bothered by that, and he became very bothered by it once his house mates learned his name origin. The teasing was not bad, Rune experienced worse due to his propensity to cause explosions, but Seek was not a dragon to tolerate teasing especially when he already spent a lot of energy fighting his urge to copy others.

Seek studied the best he could despite the teasing and he was pretty good, among the best of his class. He was also most likely one of the most exhausted students but he ignored it for time being. He had courses to pass and paths to choose. Seek’s hatching home had five old guardian spirits and as such myths relating to them. Seek had never been that into those spirits, or elemental gods for that matter; they just felt too broad for his taste, like a bedtime story that was blown out of its proportions. Still, he was curious of them, mainly where the stories originated from, how they had evolved over time and how they affected cultures. The more courses he passed the stronger his curiosity grew and eventually he started to focus solely on folklore studies.

Seek’s studies were going well but the amount of work and the teasing were really starting to wear him down and with that he found it ever harder to fight his mimicking instinct. During one encounter with his bullies he found himself stroking his tail tip like the opposing pearlcatcher did and for him that was the final straw. He decided to change his breed and as a way to show off to his teasers he obtained the most expensive scroll he could get his hands on, the coatl scroll. That didn’t stop bullying but it did calm it down a bit, most likely because he was now slightly bigger and he could use his crests to intimidate others. If it stopped something completely, it was the need to copy what others did and that was the best part of the change, even if it cost Seek a lot.

Ever since having picked his focus Seek had been looking for his thesis topic. He had looked into all the possibilities and after doing in-depth analysis on all of them he was about ready to make the final choice. He would present it to his teacher the next day and he left the library to go prepare for that. On his way to his dorm room he heard some of Rune’s bullies talking to themselves. He usually ignored them, what his brothers did was not of his concern, but this time he heard something that made him stop. He rarely talked with other student let alone asked anything from them but this time he had to know and he asked the jerks to repeat what they said. Rune’s bullies were not that interested about Seek, even when they knew of their kinship, and politely explained that Rune had gotten hurt during work while Vash had died. Upon hearing that Seek turned around and rushed to where he assumed Rune to be, the healing offices of the Observatory.

Rune and as extension Vash had decided to become hazardous environments workers, HEV workers for shorts, which was a very dangerous work reserved for criminals and other lowly things. Seek did not know why the two had decided to become those, or more closely why Rune had decided to become one because Vash did everything his older brother did. Seek found Rune where he had expected to see him his face being only partly physical. The more acceptable reaction would have been to ask how the little brother was doing but Seek was not good with dealing with his emotions and he took out his grief on Rune who didn’t respond. He lectured his younger brother for some time before a HEV supervisor arrived and asked him to leave. On his way out he checked how Vash was looking and the youngest brother no longer looked like a nocturne, he barely passed for a dragon.

Rune was able to leave the healing offices soon and Seek found him stare at the HEV locker room which was now guarded by his bullies. Rune seemed like he wanted to get in while Seek did not want that. As he walked past the younger brother he told him to not approach the room. He hoped the nocturne understood what he tried to say and didn’t stop to hear his answer. Seek didn’t see Rune after that but he eventually heard that the nocturne had left the Observatory. Seek got a little worried of where his brother had gone and after hearing where the younger brother had gone, back home, he decided to follow. That was all rather convenient for him as he had been planning on returning home as well, at least for his thesis which he had decided to write on clan’s guardian spirits.

Seek found Rune in the clan where the nocturne was seemingly making himself DIY hazard suit. He wanted to go stop him but he had other things to focus on. Besides, the clan rarely if ever had incidents that required HEV workers so Rune should be alright, as long as he stayed in the lair. While home Seek also decided to check on Starfall who had returned back home way earlier and decided to turn himself into an obelisk. The breed change was such an obvious choice to him that Seek would have been surprised to see his younger brother still as a nocturne. Once he had done with checking his brothers Seek reserved himself a study room in the temple after which he settled into the wood to find hints of spirits’ origins.

Seek started his studies on the eastern side of the landmass near the Fairy Grove where Oberon and Astor lived with their fairy overlords. He stayed out of the area itself because he wanted to avoid its residents, although during the two times he had walked through he had not seen a single fairy. Seek studied the flora of the wood in an attempt to find connections to the myths when disembodied voices asked what he was doing. Knowing not to trust voices he could not see Seek was fast to demand the voices revealed themselves and a group of fairies appeared to look down to the coatl.

One of the fairies repeated what another one had asked about what Seek was doing and he answered a bit annoyed by the disturbance. The fairies were delighted to get an answer and yet another one asked what Seek had learned thus far. He was annoyed and just said that fairies were nosy. Either the group of tiny ladies didn’t see his words as an insult or they were amused by that. Seek heard them giggle and talk amongst themselves about how he was funny, dry, overly serious and all that stuff. Seek tolerated that for a moment but eventually he snapped and told the fairies to shut up as they were hindering his work. The fairies didn’t seem to hear him and flew closer some saying they wanted to keep him as a pet. They just kept talking with each other ignoring every and all of Seek’s questions. Eventually the fairies started to fly right above Seek’s head and he soon noticed having been turned into an imp.

Seek was horrified by the turn of events and attempted to return home but the fairies didn’t let him. If he tried to run they flew in front of him or tied his leg with vines and when he was staying still he was being cuddled or decorated with flowers. Seek tried to ask the fairies to turn him back to normal but they didn’t want to lose their new pet and he was forced stay with the group of oversized noisy flies. Seek was stuck with the fairies for about a day when a grimoire arrived to see the group. Grimoires like that were standard familiars of HEV workers and Seek wondered what it did in the wood, especially when it clearly wasn’t Rune’s.

The grimoire asked if the imp was Seek and Seek asked how the book knew that. The grimoire told it was able to sense it after which it told it had followed him since he had visited Vash’s remains because the coatl had seemed like he could use some emotional support. The book had been Vash’s before the young one had lost his life. The fairies listened the book and one of them asked if it was going to take their pet away. The grimoire asked why the ladies had taken the dragon as their pet and the fairies gave two answers on top each other; they had found Seek amusing and they had right to do anything to dragons who were not part of the local clan. Seek was fast to stick to that notation and he explained he was a local; one of his fathers was Undreg who occasionally visited the wood.

The fairies were shocked by that while the grimoire stayed neutral, most likely because it was just a book. The grimoire revealed its pages and soon enough Seek found himself in familiar feathered body with few out of place parts, mainly horns on his head. Seek and the book started to make their way to the lair the grimoire asking Seek question about his mental state. Seek was not in the mood but he answered the questions the best he could until he eventually spotted the fairies following them. Feeling insulted, and a little scared, by the tiny creatures he asked what they wanted and one of them said they wanted to come with him. Seek asked for a reason and the fairies gave about four different answers once again on top of each other. One wanted to keep cuddling him, another one found him funny, third one said she was curious of Seek’s studies and fourth one said she wanted to see world.

Seek was not sure if he wanted to have the swarm follow him and he asked the grimoire for help with his eyes. The grimoire told that fairies had difficulties understanding “no” and it suggested Seek to accept the fairies with him. Seek did not want that, not after what they had done to him, but he was afraid they would do him same what they had done to Oberon if he declined. He accepted the fairies as his companions and he made it very clear he did not want to be hindered or turned into a pet without consent. It remained unclear whether or not the fairies understood the request.

Seek managed to finish his thesis despite of the fairies who were more annoying than helpful. After getting his work as an official folklorist he decided to keep his base in his home clan, partly because it was more peaceful than the Observatory and partly because he wanted to keep an eye out on his brothers. He though stayed on Observatory’s paycheck and delivered all of his studied there whenever he got them ready. When not writing down his notes Seek travelled the world seeking and learning of the myths all around the dragon world. The grimoire and the fairies remained with him throughout all of that the grimoire being always helpful while the fairies were that only occasionally.

Seek had gotten into a nice workflow since graduating; he found a myth he wanted to study, he travelled to where it was prevalent, gathered his research material, returned home to compile the information and delivered the document to the Observatory, rinse and repeat. After the research he usually either took a break or went to listen to Midnight, sometimes he did both. The seer told her visions in story form and Seek treated them as more whimsical history lessons or future predictions. At times the snapper told stories that sounded like real legends and Seek used those as inspiration for his studies.

Night of the Nocturne was about to end and Seek had gone to listen Midnight’s stories again as he prepared to get back to work. The old snapper told a story about a firebird that appeared in what sounded like the north-east corner of the Dream Wood landmass. Seek knew the legend of the firebird, or more closely he had heard variations of it though he, and everyone else, lacked the clear picture. Seek was skeptical that the firebird was going to appear in the Dream Wood, no one had seen any signs of smoke gyres in there if one ignored the one Pinkapi owned, but if it did actually appear it would be a great opportunity to learn more about the mystical creature. Seek thanked Midnight and returned to the main lair to prepare for the event.

According to the snapper the firebird would appear after the Night of the Nocturne ended and Seek waited until then before he started to make his way towards the rarely visited area of the forest. He moved by teleporting little by little to move faster and avoid the threats better; he could have teleported right to the area but that would have annoyed the fairies that still tagged along. In the north the group smelled faint scent of smoke and as they got closer they saw the trees and ground were slightly singed. Seek asked his companions to be on alert as they started to scout the area for any sign of the bird and he really wanted to slap the fairies for their constant excited murmurs.

There was a clear singed trail on the ground but Seek didn’t follow it exactly; firebird had wings, it could be flying above the ground and such not leave any markings. He glanced behind trees in order to check if the bird had made its way over there but thus far he had not seen anything. What he ended up finding instead was Rune who looked his brother through the HEV helmet. Despite of Seek’s constant indirect requests to get another job the nocturne had continued working as HEV worker and the coatl found himself wondering if the younger brother did it all out of spite, even though doing anything out of spite was very unlike Rune.

The brothers asked what the other one was doing in the burnt forest Rune saying he had been sent to investigate a forest fire while Seek explained he was looking for a firebird as he cleaned the ash off his hands. The HEV worker asked if the folklorist had seen one and he had to say he had not spotted one yet. Rune seemed a little worried, possibly because firebirds could be dangerous, and he asked if his brother wanted to join him. Seek wasn’t that excited about the idea, the brothers weren’t in best of terms, but Seek’s grimoire pointed out they had better chance at finding the target if they worked together and so Seek accepted the offer.

The brothers followed the burnt trail Seek occasionally glancing to the sky. The dragons walked in complete silence while the fairies gossiped like usual Seek feeling little embarrassed by their words. They clearly though Rune looked very weird and they clearly thought the nocturne could not hear them which was very clearly not true. Eventually the fairies started to complain about the smell of smoke and both dragons noticed the ash was still warm, they were getting close. The brothers walked to the edges of the trail to cover more ground and eventually Seek spotted something glowing nearby. After sneaking closer he saw a big fiery creature which attempted to escape as soon as it spotted the coatl.

Seek shouted to Rune and started to chase the creature, at the moment it was moving too much for him to tell what it was exactly. The two dragons attempted to slow the creature down with spells but the thing was agile and it was fast, Seek had to teleport to keep up with it. The chase had gone on for some time and the folklorist noticed Rune was starting to fall behind, possibly because his attire was not meant for long sprints like that. Seek also started to get tired and not wanting to let the creature escape he teleported right in front of it. It attempted to dodge but it couldn’t do it fast enough and Seek managed to hit with a spell. That though didn’t stop it and the coatl attempted again and again aiming to get the creature between him and Rune.

It was about fifth or sixth time Seek had teleported right in front of the creature to get it cornered and thus far it had always attempted to dodge. This time, however, it didn’t do that. Instead it decided to rush straight towards Seek, and it being clearly bigger and on fire his heart skipped a beat as he went through what could happen if the creature rushed right into him. His grimoire told him to dodge and he tried while he still felt his legs when the ground rose between him and the creature. Seek was confused for a moment but then the ground lowered itself and on the other side of the ground wall Rune was casting spells. Between the brothers there now was a hole in which the fiery creature was trapped and Rune made sure it didn’t escape with few shield spells.

The dragons walked to the hole and down there was the fiery creature which sadly was not a bird, if anything it looked more like a sandsurge much to Seek’s disappointment. He took a step back when the fire sandsurge tried to jump out but he came back after noticing Rune’s spells were holding up. The HEV worker didn’t even wince and Seek wondered if he even felt the heat emitting from the fire creature which was begging to be let go. Rune was still panting after the chase and Seek decided to ask what the creature was exactly. It looked like a sandsurge but it could have been a spirit taking a form of one. The fiery creature ignored Seek’s question and just continued begging as it didn’t want to end up back in “prison”.

Seek turned to Rune assuming he had gotten training to how to deal with these kinds of situations and the HEV worker attempted to calm down the distressed creature. Once it fell silent the nocturne asked if the creature had a name and he said he was Fire. Despite of the fancy pronunciation Seek was able to tell he was just using his element as his name. He was unimpressed but decided to ignore it and asked where Fire came from and what he did in the wood. The answer was quite disjointed but it sounded like the elemental was some kind of lab escapee. That was even bigger disappointment to Seek who couldn’t really make a study out of lab experiments as they lacked the cultural connections he focused on. He didn’t really care what would happen to the fire elemental and he let Rune decide that with a silent look.

Rune talked with Fire for a moment and after being clear that the fire elemental posed no threat to the wood or the clan in there he let the spirit go. Fire dashed away in a form that looked a bit like a bird made out flames and Seek assumed that was the firebird Midnight had seen in her vision. Sadly it had not been the real firebird Seek had hoped for. After that the brothers walked back home in total silence while the fairies tested if the tired dragons could maintain their annoyance. As the group made their way back to home Seek went through what had happened. The moment he had frozen in front of a charging fire creature really bothered him and he wondered what would have happened to him if Rune had not managed to cast his spells in time.

Seek’s grimoire seemed to notice his thoughts and he suggested him to thank his brother. At first the coatl declined the offer as that would have made the situation even more awkward but the grimoire insisted and eventually Seek gave up. He just about managed to say “thank you” for saving his skin and the HEV worker just said it was nothing and that the folklorist had done more than he had. Seek wanted to say Rune’s HEV skills became handy but that would have made him sound like he approved his brother’s job choice and he could never do that, not after it had taken Vash’s life. The grimoire didn’t like Seek’s attitude but he kept his mouth shut.

Once the brother got closer to the lair Rune eventually asked what Seek was planning on doing since they had not found the firebird. Seek was not sure yet but he thought about paying Midnight a visit for another inspiration. Maybe he should ask her about the real firebird. After the brothers reached the lair they both went their separate ways Seek paying the spa a visit before he went to the starwood lair as he didn’t want to smell like smoke. While the starwood residents would not mind the fairies would and he didn’t want to hear them complain more than they already did. After that he went to his nest and the following evening he paid the storyteller a visit. This time he would get a story for the real deal.

Traits

Seek is an arcane coatl with pale purple body that has skink pattern and yellow markings. His wings and head feathers are purple, transparent and bee like, he tends to keep the head feathers standing up to show his confidence. His tail is normally blue and glows dimly near the tip, when he lights it up its color turns more into purple near the base where the glow isn’t that strong. The rest of the tail and the light itself is pale blue. Seek was once turned into an imp and as a relic from that he has small purple horns growing on his head, a clear black nose, clearly scaled legs and arms with the legs having a bit of black fur and his chest feathers are constantly burning with blue and purple flames. The flames emit no heat and barely produce any light. He has no visible marks of his past as a nocturne. His eyes are pale in color.

Despite of being a scholar who thinks of him rather highly Seek is dressed rather modestly. He wears a muted blue and purple, almost grey, cloak, blue sandals and bracelets with hearts and silver earrings with spell circle pattern. He is dressed up modestly because of his job. While he spends a lot time inside writing and reading he also spends a lot of time outside doing field study where more decorative clothing could get in the way. Decorations could also attract all kinds of creatures that could try to rob him. The slightly ragged cloak is enough coverage against weather and it is cozy and warm to wear no matter where he is.

Seek is a confident speaker who knows what he wants to say and he is not afraid to say it, though he rarely sees point in conversations that don’t relate to his job. He is very dry with his speech and often comes across as cold. If he is annoyed he may repeat what the other one said in sarcastic or even aggressive tone, a relic from his nocturne past. He has a clean Norwegian accent.

Small pile of pink petals.

Seek is a dry and down-to-earth dragon who tends to be a bit skeptical of anything he hasn’t personally witnessed. He though is also curious and if someone claims something he will make his research before he deems the claim true or untrue. He is very much work-oriented and doesn’t really see point in things that are only meant to be entertaining or fun. He is almost always working and even when someone suggests him something fun to do he approaches it from work’s perspective. He is interested about the origin of the fun thing and its evolution more than he is about the thing itself. He is especially interested about myths and legends because they all feel nonsensical yet every culture seems to have at least few that are very important to it. Though he doesn’t take the myths seriously he tries to be respectful towards those who believe in them, if not for anything else then for research material.

Seek is not that social of a dragon. Because he used to be a nocturne who used a lot of energy to suppress his mimicking instinct he learned to keep his distance from others, though he has never been particularly interested in others in the first place. He is extremely dry dragon and quite boring dragon to hang out with because of that. He also has some troubles recognizing his emotions and he may lash out if he experiences strong enough emotions. He may be extremely direct and inconsiderate but he is rarely straight up aggressive. Despite being rather distant from everyone Seek cares for his family members though he may struggle noticing that himself.

Seek is accompanied by total of eight creatures that can be split into two camps; a grimoire and the fairies. The grimoire is called Homeros and it is an old sentient book and a HEV companion. It was paired with Seek’s brother but after he died it decided to follow Seek instead because it sensed he needed some help with regulating his feelings. It communicates mainly through telepathy and may offer anything from emotional support to spells and solutions to problems. It can also help with spell casting on its own and as an ex-HEV companion it can absorb energy into itself after which it can manifest that energy into a piece of paper so a dragon can deal with it properly. Homeros can float without problems and it can teleport as well but just following others is challenging and as such it often takes hold of its dragon company with a chain so the dragon can pull it. The group of fairies on the other hand include seven ladies called Maia, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope and Merope. They started to follow the dragon after they fell in love with his dry attitude which they found either cute or amusing and they mostly tag along for their own fun. The fairies care mostly about themselves and annoy Seek often, though when they decide to be helpful they are very helpful. Homeros on the other hand is always helpful and Seek respects the book as a mentor of sorts.

Small pile of pink petals.

Seek studied in the Observatory and as such he knows a lot of spells and possess a lot of information. He can levitate items and change their sizes, even multiple at once. He can turn items and creatures into others though not dragons, create spheres of magic to light up the area, fire homing projectiles, concentrate enough energy to start a small fire, create all kinds of shields and forcefields, create holograms and teleport. He can name few dozen constellations, nebulas, planets and other space objects, a lot of landmarks and some species, both flora and fauna. He knows crystals and their attributes, few alchemic recipes and few art styles though he can’t do art himself. He knows historical events very well and he knows the basics of fortune telling. His main focus lies in studying myths and as such he has very good understanding of different cultures and he is also good with few dozen dialects and some old languages. He also speaks few words from each of the beastclans' languages though not enough to have full on conversations.
