Biography
Chalce
From the moment he hatched, Chalce knew he wanted to do something to help other dragons. He studied as a medic for a brief time, but in the end, came to the realization that he was too squeamish to handle severe physical injuries. He almost gave up on his calling altogether — but this was about the time something began to tug on his heartstrings, and pulled him onto his Search.
On his Search, Chalce traveled across Sornieth, and looked high and low for what would become his Charge. But he still felt that his calling was in helping dragons, and so, during his travels, he detoured to consult with various experts in pain relief: the twin doctors Ibu and Profen, the good princess of medicine Aleve, the mysterious mystic Madame Motrin, and so many others, found all across Sornieth and all willing to help Chalce find where his heart belonged. And finally, it clicked for him: his destiny was not in direct healing and medicine, but in pain relief.
Chalce cannot heal any injuries or illnesses; he’s far too squeamish for either of those. But he can treat the symptom: pain. Soreness, bruises, arthritis, aches — if one of the healers has treated the cause and all one needs is something to ease the pain, Chalce will be right there. He will place his claws over the center of pain and, in his sweet, soft-spoken voice, recite the ancient incantation: “Pain, pain, go away!” His magic isn’t very powerful, but he can do this one thing. For hatchlings, he adds an extra layer of sweetness to this treatment by kissing their boo-boos and offering sparkly bandages and lollipops. The clan’s main healers appreciate him for this task, as it prevents their offices from filling up with patients with little more than scrapes and bumps, leaving them able to attend to the patients with more serious needs.
Of all the dragons in the clan with a romantic interest in Screechfang’s eldest daughter, Suvi, Chalce is by far the one with the biggest crush. Ever since he was a hatchling, he has been following hot on her heels, desperate for her approval. He frequently finds ways to duck around Rosvirein and Anasa to try and speak to her. What Chalce fails to understand is that Suvi has a great need for independence and space, and that when she tries to duck off on her own, she’s trying to avoid him, too. He doesn’t seek her out of malice or poor intentions; he is simply naive to her needs and desperately craving her approval. Suvi doesn’t remember this, but when Chalce was only a hatchling, Suvi was one of the few dragons to support his medical interests despite his squeamishness. In Chalce’s eyes, he owes his entire destiny, if not his entire life, to Suvi.
