Xot hatched in the Black Spiral, and, in some wretched way, she still sees it as home. She feels like she belongs there, in a way that she hasn't felt anywhere else, but she also knows that if she wants to be just like her mother - if she wants to contribute to the cause of knowledge - she needs to carve out her own niche. She went to Light, because librarians are always needed (they get snapped up so easily, blind as they are in the Spiral) and, more vitally to her, significant. Revered. If her children are seen as important, then Xot would be too. The only hitch in her plan is that her life of lurking on the outskirts of the Spiral, dodging otherworldly creatures and helping out where she could, did not prepare her for the ordeal of finding another dragon to nest with. She gets the sense that her mother's relationship with her father isn't... standard, but it's the best example she has to go on. Lucent is huge and quiet and gorgeous, but - most importantly - he makes her feel safe, out here where it's too bright and angular. With him around, she doesn't feel the need to duck and hide as much, which lets her focus on teaching her hatchlings how not to lose themselves or get torn apart in the Spiral. (She catches herself missing him when he's not around, and that - doesn't seem right. Is affection part of the arrangement her mother and father have? Is she doing this all wrong?)
