Kerasi refuses to enter the Black Spiral. This has been a point of contention between her and her mother for as long as she can remember, but Xot won't force her anywhere, and she's dug her heels in so deep on this issue that the manipulation and grand stories that worked on her sisters don't work on her. It helps that - once - her father quietly caught her eye and called her clever under his breath. It makes her think that there's more out there worth doing than what her mother has taught them, and maybe - even if this is all she was made to do - she can find her purpose somewhere else.
