Biography
CALLIS "What is dead may never die." |
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Moros' children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain. |
Named for Jupiter's moon, Callisto Pair to Azrael (Archangel lineage)
Callis had a happy childhood. Her parents showed her much affection and she enjoyed playing with her nestmates. When she was old enough to travel on her own, she left her clan to see the world. She spent years flying from region to region, learning about the many inhabitants of Sornieth. She'd never had any issues staying safe and would frequently return home to visit her family. But on that fateful night, she ran into a strange creature. A creature that looked like a dragon, yet was something more...
That creature was Azreal, an Archangel. He radiated power that was otherworldy, divine. She felt attracted to that energy, to him. The angel looked at Callis for a long moment before flying off without having said a word.
Callis began having visions, predictions of doom. She found herself seeing tragedies before they happened, yet was somehow unable to prevent them. Where once she only saw the joy and beauty of the world, she now saw only sorrow.
Azrael came before her once more, finding her hunched over and crying.
"What are you, and what did you do to me?" she asked him through her tears.
"I am Azrael. I sense that our destinies are intertwined. But I do not know of what you speak of, that I would have 'done' something to you. Tell me, what is wrong?" He put a hand on her shoulder, a gentle, warm presence.
Callis looked deep into Azrael's eyes. She saw kindness there, as well as empathy. He'd seen some despair in his life, she could tell. So she decided to tell him about her visions.
"Visions are not one of my powers, nor would I be able to share my powers with you, I think. However, I have heard of dragons that possess such abilities. The abilities seem to run in families. Perhaps one of your ancestors had similar experiences?"
Callis thought this was a good lead and decided to ask her parents. She wiped the tears off her face and turned to look at Azrael. "You said our destinies are intertwined. Does that mean I will see you again?"
"Yes, I believe so." After giving her a brief smile, Azrael flew off once more.

Callis spoke to her parents, learning that her father Vale shared her visions of gloom. He told her how he helped dragons find peace after their loved ones had passed. Her mother looked nervous and refused to look Callis in the eye. "Mother, is there something you need to tell me?"
Melda took a deep breath and looked at her daughter. "I suppose I should tell you, though I don't fully understand it myself. Still, I will tell you what I know." Melda then told Callis about their family's curse - the "life anew" that awaited after death.
Callis wasn't sure how to feel about all this new information. She thanked her parents for sharing and stayed with them for a few days before journeying once more.
~~~~~
Azrael appeared before her more frequently, often to comfort her after her visions. He always seemed to know when she was feeling down and would rush to her side. They spent long hours talking about life, death, grieving, and finding purpose in your existence. As they shared their innermost thoughts, they fell in love.
This love would be what cost Callis her life. Azrael had warned her that he didn't stay in any one place too long for he was always worried about being discovered by angels. These beings could sense the divine energy that radiated off him, much the way Callis could. But whereas she was attracted to it because it made her feel safe, these angels were attracted to him because he was an "abomination that violated their laws." His grandparents had broken the taboo against mingling and their children would be hunted to "right the wrong".
So when the angels came for him, Callis knew that she would do anything to protect him. She would fight for him, live for him...die for him. She took a blow intended for him, a blow that would prove fatal. She felt the life leaving her, her limbs getting cold despite Azrael holding her in his arms. She could feel his tears on her face. She sought to reassure him by telling him that everything would be all right, but the tears just kept falling. The darkness closed in around her...
Callis awoke in the darkness, a [familiar] standing before her. "You have a choice to make," the -- said to her. So a choice she made.
~~~~
Azrael was surprised to feel the warmth return to Callis's body. He'd never known a dragon to survive a blow like that, or to return from the dead. His beloved opened her eyes and said, "I told you everything would be all right." He pulled her closer and cried once more, this time tears of joy.
~~~~
Callis explained her situation to her beloved. It was unusual, for sure, but neither would deny that they would rather not be parted. Callis knew that one day she would have to serve the family curse with her new chance at life, but for now she was happy to spend her time with Azrael.
Neither was sure if she were "alive" enough to nest eggs until she did, hatching 2 babies. The two raised their hatchlings with love, though Callis promised that she would warn her children of their fate and prepare them for their own "choice".
