Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Moros' children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

Melda and her brother, Darby, were born after their parents' fusion into an emperor. She has a few happy memories from her childhood, but also memories of fear involving her father. While her mother comforted her with gentle words, her father left her feeling uneasy with his constant whispering under his breath and talk of never being apart. As she grew, Melda wished to grow strong enough to live on her own. She wished to escape from her parents. She loved them, but she couldn't help but be unnerved by their condition.

At least, those are the scant memories she has from her previous life. She doesn't quite remember what happened. She recalls her father being very angry and feeling afraid...then, nothing after that.

Melda was awoken from the endless sleep of death by Mortis, a Dire Vulture. The familiar told her that she would not have to be afraid of her father anymore. "He can't hurt you now. Never again." Melda didn't know what that meant exactly, but she felt relieved.

"Um, but wasn't I dead? I don't quite remember, but I recall a dark, quiet void. I don't understand what is happening."

"I will explain it all in time. For now, know that there are still things you have left to do. You'll learn of them in time."

Melda met an understanding Skydancer called Vale who asked if she was in need of guidance. He could sense that she was surrounded by a cloud of sorrow and sat patiently as she explained her troubled past and her confusing current situation. He nodded along and validated her feelings, never once mocking her or disbelieving the strange tale that she was telling. When asked, he explained that he was used to helping lost spirits find peace. However, while she was lost, she wasn't a spirit, per se. She had died...but was once more among the living. Yet unsure of her purpose, or even how she got to be this way. The gentle Skydancer promised to help her figure it out.

As they talked and grew closer, they felt a bond forming. Melda knew that Vale was special, that she wanted to remain near him. They decided that they would become mates and had three children together.

Mortis had not appeared before Melda again since that first night. She was starting to wonder if she'd dreamed it all, but then the vulture once more appeared in front of her.

"I'm hear to talk," said the vulture.

Afraid of what he would say, but still curious, Melda replied, "Please speak."

"Your children will inherit the family curse," Mortis told her.

"What curse?" Melda asked, concerned.

"The one where they will die, yet get a chance to live again. Much as you did."

"Ah, so that explains before then. Still, I do not wish for my children to suffer."

"Life is full of suffering," said the vulture. "May you find peace when it is time to rest for good. But that time is still a ways off, for you. I've come to tell you about one of the reasons you were brought back..."
