Ryder never really fit in anywhere when he was a hatchling. Most of his friends and family had all called him cured or possessed. His family you see was the Supernatural Investigators whose goal in life was to destroy the demons and evil spirits that roamed Sornieth so as you might assume a hatchling with no shadow,—much less a hatchling that can control shadows with their mind— would have to be cursed in some way. The only one who accepted him in his home was his sister Lorelei, and when their parents finally decided that Ryder had to go for his own interest of safety she decided to go with him despite Ryder wanting her to stay in the safety of her home clan for Lorelei was as stubborn as a mule and as loyal as a badger.

So the siblings set out in the dark of night to find their new home. Their pace was slightly slowed because they both highly preferred pack journeys and temporarily joined a few who where on the hunt. But they didn't mind because they themselves didn't quite know where they were going so why hurry to get there? They were quite enjoying their life of traveling in open by day and vanquishing spirits by night and Ryder had quite the knack for getting rid of demons by using his shadows to quell them but just as they had promptly decided to just keep traveling they caught wind of a dragoness in great need of their help.
