As is his nature, Ain wandered his way to the Tabemono settlement. Originally from clan Aoelia, he was headed back from his first Nature gig and decided to go the scenic route. Ramu found him and brought him to the little clearing the Tabemono call home. After meeting a certain cold-eyed mechnanic, Ain decided to settle down here for good. He visits home regularly to bring his parents a batch of their favorite cookies. Laurie doesn't return his romantic feelings—Ain's accepted that. He treasures the platonic bond they've forged, the 2am talks and joyful ribbing. Laurie will always be a part of him, metaphorically and literally—she designed the prosthetic limb Ain has walked on since his coli accident. Then there's Ocha, Ain's partner in kitchen crime. Ocha's teas are earthy and layered—tricky, but not impossible, to match in pastry form. Ain adores the challenge. He adores Ocha too. The guy pours his whole heart into everything he does, no matter how much of it he loses in the process. Ocha loses his heart a lot. Ain's seen it happen... ...Alright. If Ain's being honest, he's not as straight as he thought he was. He could be brave, make a move, see what his chances are. Their friendship is strong enough to outlast one-sided feelings, right? If it doesn't work out between them, things will go back to normal, given time. Right? In his head, Ain plays out every possible scenario, every reaction Ocha could have to his confession. It only leaves him feeling more uncertain than before. At least a stressed Ain is productive Ain. His and Ocha's catering-cafe, Pastrea, has gained a modest following: there's dough to mix and permits to renew. If Ocha's noticed the mounting tension, he hasn't said anything. Ain will pull himself together and figure this out. Eventually... |

Ain is lucky. He thanks his father for his polished reflexes. He won't forget his mother's strong arms. Every challenge he meets with his dad's fervor and his mom's advice echoing inside his head. When his friends mention old clans, it is in voices tight with yearning. They talk of faded smells, tastes, sounds, and colors; of old nests and old friends and old hiding spots. And Ain? His most recent visit comes to mind: his father's chuckle, his mother's smile. He can still feel the familiar breeze licking the feathers behind his neck. Others close their eyes to go home.
