Iron Wrench
Laurel is the clan's astronomer-turned-mechanic. She thinks with her heart as much as her head; she throws her whole being into her work. When she's not fixing clanmates' applicances, she's flirting with her first love—the stars. Weaving between the constellations brings her the utmost joy.

Blunt, practiced, and to-the-point, Laurie possesses excellent technical skill. Navigating systems is her specialty. She spots solutions before the glitches that call for them happen; explanations are where Laurie falls short. It frustrates her to dissect the obvious. Time tends to prove Laurie's point; Ain and Ocha worked out in the end. Relationships are nebulous; they make and break themselves. To Laurie, machinery offers far more interesting fixes.

That cool, curt energy flares to a boil the moment anyone mentions dragon politics. To Laur, the deities' rule is tyrannical, militaristic, and deeply, deeply insidious. She can't hear the voices of dragons whose faith connects them to something greater than themselves. In their eyes, Laurie sees her second love who chose exaltation—chose the deities' wars—over the full life he deserved.

He doesn't look like he's about to meet a god. He looks calm.

"Aren't you scared?" He must be. Laurie just can't believe it.

"Scared?" Glancing at her, the older hatchling finally blanches. "I-I guess, a little ..." he sputters, adding quickly "Though, I've heard good things about him."

"The Anarchist," she utters numbly. This dragon will be leaving his home. Forever. Before his wings fully grow in. His eyes drift upwards.

"Yeah," he sighs.

She remembers Tobi with wry smiles and glances skyward—then realizes she's not sure where exactly the exalted go. Gone are the copper-toned lashes and tender smiles. All she has is a map sketched in his careful hand.

"Come home with me," she'd said all those years ago, and he'd agreed: softy, but he'd agreed. He'd followed her away from the martyrdom he'd been slated for. He'd chosen to stay. Stay and draw and live.

To be clear, she doesn't resent him for changing his mind. It pierced something deep inside of him, that fatalistic sense of "duty." It sapped the energy from his hands, his eyes, his once-eager footsteps. Guilt consumed him, body and soul. When she woke up alone, she knew.

There's a reason she doesn't sing the deities' praises anymore. The notes taste stale. The words crumble to dust.
