parallel and perpendicular are co-partners and heads of a family smuggling business, which runs powerful, elemental magic artifacts and amulets stolen from the eleven deities themselves all across sorneith. some offspring help transport items while others exalt themselves to infiltrate a deity's ranks and get better access to more objects to steal

some objects are more powerful than others. their vendibles range from the deities' trash to their most prized possessions. the most expensive are bits of scale, fur, or feathers from the deities' own bodies (also the most dangerous to get)

they raise their hatchlings in mango pirate canyon because it offers protection from outside detection. parallel trains them in the canyon, and when perp returns from operations they perform a variety of tasks and challenges to show how far they've come. she'll take the ones she deems ready with her to prentice specially under her wing before graduating and joining the family business in full. descendants that mate and introduce their own children to the business are also met and tutored by perp, if only for a short mission

the two are both awfully cheery, clearly confident in themselves, their career and family, their skills and abilities, and in their own relationship. living the high life. thriving, flourishing. never sated, always hungry for more, and knowing they'll get it

parallel's the negotiator of the two. likes to make friends, set up deals, grease palms, build relationships that are favorable for all, well, most parties involved. just wants to help make everything go . . . smoothly

he was born blind and was raised in a community of weavers. he can distinguish between threads based on feel (his whiskers are particularly sensitive), and uses years of practice to weave fabrics of exquisite quality in texture and tension. he makes his own clothes, and gifts their adult children small articles of clothing that they carry around with them wherever they go, as a marker of their belonging to the family. they knitted the scarf that perp wears <3

parallel was once friends with a poet and artist, whom they teased often about how their art could never move him as it supposedly would others. the artist took up their challenge by describing to them the sornieth moons, how their light is not their own but borrowed from the sun, how they pull on the seas to create rhythmic tides, the way the celestial bodies pull and push on another in an intricate dance of circles, all held in perfect balance and respect to another. the poem made parallel fall in love with things he could never know. the two have long since parted ways, but each night parallel goes out in the moonlight and, from much memorization, sketches out the phases of each of the moons for that night, despite being unable to see them. they also keep up with the latest research and studies done by scholars on the moons, having the scrolls delivered and read to him on the regular

he's a minor mage, not very powerful but quite tricky. his greatest feat (or, at least, the one most important to them) is a small two-way transfer spell they set up between them and perp. when one clenches a short thread in their fist and mutters the incantation, the thread teleports to the other, tied in a ring around one foreclaw. the thread is knotted in a particular pattern, and by count and type of knot, the two have developed a short code to pass messages to another no matter the time nor distance. it lets them know the other is safe or in danger and other things besides
