Toci, Field Virologist Toci is a virologist studying the Withered, a cohort of dragons afflicted with debilitating physical and mental symptoms following exposure to a strange disease vector in the ruins of the Pox Consulate. As an oathed Surgeon, she is immune, which allows her to work closely with the Withered and venture into the isolation zone without fear. She has also studied the Rage virus, having worked closely with Dr. Helian to help her overcome it. Toci isn't an easy dragon to get to know. Her passion is research, and she tends to evaluate other dragons as subjects first, people second. True to her oath, however, she remembers that other dragons have feelings, and does her best not to trample over them in her pursuit of knowledge. Those who can forgive her hauteur and occasional carelessness will find her a stalwart friend. As a devotee of the Plaguebringer, she sees viruses and related contagions as opponents sent by the goddess to test her cunning and determination. She often speaks of disease in admiring terms (off-putting to some!). If she fails to cure someone, she takes it personally, and pushes herself ever harder to find answers. |

The Surgeons’ Oath “I, Toci, swear by the Plaguebringer and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this oath, to the utmost of my power and judgement. I will teach my art without reward or agreement, and impart my knowledge to all of those who are to follow. I will remember that medicine is both a science as well as an art and that sympathy and understanding may outweigh procedures and drugs. I will not be ashamed to admit when there is something I do not know or understand, and I shall call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed. “I shall tread with care in the matters of life and death. It may be within my power to save or take a life, but above all, I must not play at God. I will prevent disease wherever I can. And if I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected and remembered hereafter.” |
