C H I L D H O O D
A long, long time ago Wendigo might have considered herself a lucky dragon. After all, she was the beloved daughter of her clan's leader and mate to a bright and cheerful, if not overly powerful or intelligent, young fae. All that changed with the birth of her first - and only - nest. The Shade struck just as the nest was hatching, forcing her - and her clanmates - to defend themselves. In the chaos, the hatching nest was left unguarded, which was to be its downfall. For when the fighting was over, the concerned young mother returned to find that only one of her children was left - a young fae who took after his father. She named him Unsophylax and swore to raise him as best she could, but the loss of her other hatchling weighed on her. |

Relief came in the form of a shadowy sprite. Morier, the clan's matriarch and founder, suspected that the sprite had been sent by the shadowy queen of the Tangled Wood. What happened next changed the clan - and the dragons - forever. What is known is that the sprite had words with Wendigo. What is not known is what they said, or why Wendigo chose that night to flee, not in the direction of the retreating Shade, but for the dusty halls of the Lightweaver. Over time Wendigo learned all the sprite could teach her; how to detect the Shade in all its myriad forms, how to fight it, and if necessary, how to drain its power and bind it or banish it. Rumors spread of Wendigo - or a dragon of her description in extraordinarily similar circumstances - until at last she gave up and began spreading rumors of her own, just because she could. Over time her legend grew, then faded. |

After many years, Wendigo finally received word of her clan - rumors that her son had left for the service of his deity, which pleased her, and rumors that a strange young Guardian with burning eyes had come, claiming to be her long-lost daughter, which was much less pleasing. Wendigo suspected the other dragon to be Shade-touched and made preparations to go home, but that was not to be. She was waylaid by a tiny, grumpy fae. Encarmine quickly appropriated her services and introduced her to a young, most definitely Shade-touched young Skydancer with severe trust issues and a prickly personality. Duty-bound and knowing that her venerable age was not conducive towards travel in any case, Wendigo settled in to teach her first protege. The mystery of her daughter would have to be solved by another. |
