Biography

About

A typically quiet dragon, Grendel serves almost like a grim reaper towards birds. She rarely speaks, even to her mate, Gould. It's not quite known where she came from. She was born in Shadow but came from the Wind. The kingdom was wary of her at first, unsure about her appearance and how she wore the skulls of birds on her being as casually as others did their cloaks. But soon enough, with her becoming mates with Gould, those around her began to trust her more and see the importance of what she was doing. Repurposing what dragons would otherwise consider to be waste while also respectfully putting fallen birds to rest was seen by the other Shadow dragons as a great deal, especially when she dealt with the ever common crows and ravens. The Shadow dragons loved their crows and ravens, so to see their feathery friends being treated so kindly after their passing really helped them to trust her.

Trivia

> The skulls of birds are Grendel's Charge.
> Living in the Tangled Wood, the most common skulls she finds are crows and ravens.
> Grendel has a sort of friendship with Novalin because she also collects birdskulls
> She often fashions her birdskulls into jewelry. She'll also hang them on the walls of her cave.
> Her mate is Gould, whose charge is that of birds. Anytime one of his birds dies, she'll often take the skull and make a sort of memorial with it. With his permission, of course.

Story

Like many days, today she feels the pull of death, as familiar as an old friend. Removing her headdress, Grendel peers at the ground and reaches out a claw. A small crow lies there. It looks young, and Grendel's heart fills with sorrow for this creature, not even giving itself to being eaten but meeting a swift and unkind end. Likely many had passed it by before she felt the charge's pull towards it.
She gathers up the bird and turns for home. It won't be eaten, since she can't be sure if it was sick before it died, but she will give the stiff shape in her hands a proper treatment and burial. She will handle its skull with grace; perhaps tie it into a new project, or use it to study the curve of crow beaks.

She wonders, idly, if she - wearing jewellery of their bones ominously across her body - represents a grim reaper of sorts to a flock of birds. Black swirls benevolently around her wings, and soon, it's like nothing and no-one was ever there at all.

Finding herself within the Forgotten Kingdom was an interesting experience. Her charge was, quite literally, everywhere. It was easy for her to find birdskulls no matter where she looked, whether she had to harvest them herself or the bird had already long since decayed. At first, there were whispers that she killed the birds herself, and the reason she had been attracted to Gould was because he had birds she could kill and harvest their skulls from. But those were the words of dragons who didn't understand her charge.

Yes, she has skulls from Gould's birds, but not because she killed them. It was because they died a, usually, peaceful death and Gould let her take the skulls to make a sort of memorial for said bird. She never killed any birds, not unless she desperately needed food. They were hardly worth going after anyway and she could never bring herself to kill her mate's charge.

Her and Gould typically name their hatchlings after different bird species.
