Biography

About

A much more excitable dragon compared to his mate, Grendel, Gould finds his attention to feathered creatures flying around the kingdom. He has been known to talk down dragons from eating birds, and any that manage to escape the food stores still alive typically end up in his care. The most common birds he finds are crows and ravens within the Tangled Wood, but since the gathering teams will sometimes travel to other flight territories to gather more "exotic" food, he has a decent collection of various birds. He doesn't keep them in cages, instead letting them fly free around the cave he and Grendel call home. They can leave at any time, and he always has food and water set out for the different birds.

Trivia

> Birds are Gould's charge.
> Living in the Tangled Wood, crows and ravens make up the majority of the birds he owns
> Anytime one of his birds dies, he typically lets Grendel have their skull.
> His favorite birds are all types of parrots. He's also taken a recent affinity to the vultures found within the more swampy areas of the Tangled Wood. He also quite likes the behavior of Corvids.
> He dislikes the idea of putting birds in cages, hence his unwillingness to get any for his birds. In his words, "the birds have wings like us to fly free, and I don't want to take their freedom. To take their freedom is to take their wings. And a bird is nothing without their wings."

Story

"Look up there!"

The hulking guardian points one claw up in the air at the tiny, fragile shape of a passerine. It loops through the air before fluttering out of view. He looks as excited as a hatchling as he notes something down on a crumbling piece of parchment - it must've been hidden somewhere on his person...
"Isn't life simply wonderful?" He beams. Gould's companion is inclined to snort at how over-the-top he's being, but refrains, appreciating how unrestrained his joy is.

Back in his den, Gould shakes out food for the numerous birds the Clan had caught for prey but he'd absconded with, humming along with their trills and chirps as though he were a coatl. There are so many different sounds but somehow they work together. It doesn't make sense, but to Gould it does, perfectly. His heart chirps in tune with them.

His companion, another guardian, would've called herself a creature of death by contrast. But as she watches from the shadows of Gould's den, she can feel a note of truth in the old idiom of
opposites attract.

Gould found himself within the Forgotten Kingdom because he had felt a strong pull. When he arrived, he found that they had tons of birds in their storeroom saved for the carnivorous dragons. Thankfully, with the queen being a Guardian herself, he was able to talk her into letting him at least take some of the birds with him. He met Grendel the same day when she was gently burying the body of a passed raven. He talked with her, and eventually they found themselves getting along.

He's much more easily excitable over his charge than Grendel is, he noticed early on. But then again, her charge involves death, and his is much more lively, both figuratively and literally. However, they found a compromise to their opposite charges. When one of Gould's birds dies, he lets Grendel harvest their skull. She'll usually make the skull into a little memorial for said bird it came from, etching name that Gould had given it carefully into the bone and decorating it with feathers. The only time he doesn't allow this is with birds who died from being extra sick. He didn't want to risk the disease somehow spreading, and Grendel understood.

He's usually the one to come up with the names for their hatchlings as he has more knowledge on bird names than Grendel does. It was a surprising fact to him as well that he could name more species of bird than her, but most of her life was spent within the Shadow and Wind flights, and she had never been much of anywhere else. She is learning more about birds with him, though, and she seems just as happy knowing so much about birds as he is.
