By age twelve, Llŷr had a passport filled with stamps from every territory. A thriving child actor career will do that. Another thing it will do is follow you, as Llŷr learned during and after med school. Everywhere he goes, without fail, someone compliments his eyes or asks if he's ever been on TV. He smiles, says "thanks" or "just some apparel ads years ago," and sews perfect sutures no one comments on. Since he was young, Llŷr has always been an accident magnet. There are the small things—the dropped mugs and misplaced clipboards. Then there's the countless near-death experiences—faulty stage equipment, stove catching fire, harrowing bouts of pneumonia. It's the sort of thing you have to laugh about—"it's like my looks are a cosmic apology for the awful luck!" Near the end of his medical training, a new clanmate came by with a sprained wrist and a story. Leaving her home had been an ordeal; the surrounding woods, she claimed, feeds on the souls of travelers. As soon as he'd earned his license, Llŷr packed his things. He headed straight for Nature territory, convinced that—with his cursed luck—those trees would either kill or cure him. To Llŷr's delight, his days in the Tabemono woods have been the most accident-free of his life. It seems that his unlucky aura repels the trees' murderous intent. He sends vivid letters to his inter-territory friends, detailing the blissful, mundane dramas of small-clan life (if his elation seems indecorous, forgive him: he's thrilled that, for once, things happen around instead of to him). Running a private practice in a tiny clan leaves Llŷr with ample free time, which he spends researching memes and distressing all his denim. Moody hatchlings find him startlingly relatable. |
